Using the Euro protects the currency holder from exchange rate fluctuations that occur when you have your own currency. All European countries use the same market. This is why they agreed on the Euro. Everyone got fed up with walking in and experiencing a loss of purchasing power because their currency was shot for the day or the week. Again, no SOVEREIGNTY ISSUE!

So what happens when a country wants to leave the eurozone?

States that exceed the 3 percent deficit limit begin to borrow and dilute their share of the euro, thus causing the value of the currency to drop. There are two zones in the EU. The Eurozone, of which the PIIGS are part of, and the non-euro. The second zone has its own currency; can devaluate it; and can borrow to their heart's content. That's why Britain, a non-Euro user, kept the pound. They can do with it whatever they want. IT IS NOT A SOVERIGNTY ISSUE.
