I read an article from July 2001 where someone was argueing that the media and the Government were paying too much attention to the threat of terrorism since the number of incidents was declining. The people who travelled on 911 would - just like you do today - very likely have travelled anyway- the chances of anything happening in the US were seen as remote by most people.

I am unable to comprehend how Olbermann can criticize Norad for failing to prevent planes from crashing into buildings. I wonder what he was doing on 9-11, besides staring at the TV like everyone else. Hindsight is 2020. I find it highly, highly offensive that he almost blaims US officials for "letting" the attack happen. Sure we should change the system and work to prevent future attacks, but to nit pick one of our nation's darkest days is just bad journalism, if you can even call it that.

No, I'm telling you it would take between 30 minutes and 2 hours for NorthCom's forces to reach the strength they were already at that day due to the exercises. For example, AFRC (Air Force Reserve Command) regularly conducts "phone drills" in peace time to verify that their essential personnel can be contacted in the event of a national emergency.
This Representative seems to imply that these CPXs somehow compromised NorthCom's ability to respond to the situation. She was, quite simply, wrong. There were more fighter aircraft in the air than there would have been otherwise. Unfortunately, due to civilian regulations enacted over the prior 20 years, none of those aircraft were permitted to fly, armed, over populated areas.
The only fighters that WERE armed that day were those the General mentioned, which belonged to the Alaskan Air Command. They were monitoring Russian bomber activity. So, that drops the number of "exercises" down to 2 that were being conducted by NorthCom.

Actually, they weren't chasing "phantom jets" because of any exercise. Flight 93 became lost among other primary radar contacts when the hijackers shut its transponder off. When the transponder is shut off, the radar can still see the plane...but it can no longer positively identify the aircraft. It faded into the background, surrounded by literally thousands of primary radar contacts.

Did you know that the 9-11 Commission Report said that Flight 93 was at something like 36,000' at the time cel-phone calls were made. The report says, just before that, that Flight 93s transponder had been shut off. So, how did they know its altitude at the time of those calls with no transponder?

Actually, the transponder isn't required for navigation. How did they point the plane toward Washington DC? That's easy, they used the plane's GPS. All they have to do is punch in the 4 letter identifier of an airport in DC or the 3 letter identifier of a NAV aid there after hitting the "direct to" button. Switch the CDI to GPS and engage the autopilot, and the plane flies itself there. ;)

That's one of the easiest things to do. They had some confusion about the audio panel though, which is why they ended up transmitting to the outside world. That can be pretty confusing from one aircraft to another...we have airline pilots do that while flying bugsmashers all the time.

There were a lot of warnings about possible terrorist attacks - in the form of increased suspicious movements of individuals and intelligence asessments from foreign intelligence services and from the CIA - 'the system was blinking red' during the year. During that time he used commercial aircraft for his personal trips. All the other Bush Cabinet appointees, with the exception of Interior and Energy with remote sites to oversee, flew commercial airliners.

I read an article from July 2001 where someone was argueing that the media and the Government were paying too much attention to the threat of terrorism since the number of incidents was declining. The people who travelled on 911 would - just like you do today - very likely have travelled anyway- the chances of anything happening in the US were seen as remote by most people.

im 3 minutes in now, about the scrambled jets, Payne Stewart, the late professional golfer was killed in a plane crash. Within 10 minutes he had 2 scrambled fighters in the viscinity. I am unable to comprehend how Olbermann can criticize Norad for failing to prevent planes from crashing into buildings. I wonder what he was doing on 9-11, besides staring at the TV like everyone else. Hindsight is 2020. I find it highly, highly offensive that he almost blaims US officials for "letting" the attack happen. Her questions are loaded, because first of all, she insisted there were 4 CPXs running that day, when in fact (as stated by General Myers), one of those exercises wasn't even being conducted by NorthCom. Then she goes on to ask if that day was classified as a National Security Event, clearly revealing that she had simply read that somewhere and had no idea what she was actually asking about.

No, I'm telling you it would take between 30 minutes and 2 hours for NorthCom's forces to reach the strength they were already at that day due to the exercises. For example, AFRC (Air Force Reserve Command) regularly conducts "phone drills" in peace time to verify that their essential personnel can be contacted in the event of a national emergency.

This Representative seems to imply that these CPXs somehow compromised NorthCom's ability to respond to the situation. She was, quite simply, wrong. There were more fighter aircraft in the air than there would have been otherwise. Unfortunately, due to civilian regulations enacted over the prior 20 years, none of those aircraft were permitted to fly, armed, over populated areas.

The only fighters that WERE armed that day were those the General mentioned, which belonged to the Alaskan Air Command. They were monitoring Russian bomber activity. So, that drops the number of "exercises" down to 2 that were being conducted by NorthCom.

Look at it this way, if you're having a discussion about how many video inputs your television has...and suddenly someone asks... "What temperature was your refrigerator at on your birthday?", "Why didn't you classify that as a thermal event?", ...how do you answer that question? Do those questions sound loony to you? Good! See? This is the problem with people seeing these videos. They have no idea what they are listening to. NORAD conducts exercises frequently, usually without the prior knowledge of the staff. When something completely unusual like this happens, why wouldn't someone ask if it was real or an exercise? Doesn't that seem logical to you? BTW..what is a "polite" as in the "polite that was on the plane that hit the pentagon"?

Actually, they weren't chasing "phantom jets" because of any exercise. Flight 93 became lost among other primary radar contacts when the hijackers shut its transponder off. When the transponder is shut off, the radar can still see the plane...but it can no longer positively identify the aircraft. It faded into the background, surrounded by literally thousands of primary radar contacts.

NO,when I say phantom jets I mean they were chasing false blips on radar that were inserted there by the folks playing war games, who we're not sure who[they]were.This was brought up in a congressional hearing when McKinney ask Richard Myers who was managing those war games and she was interrupted by Mr.Speaker and told Myers they were short on time and he was going to file a written report as well.

I'm sorry, but I'm still not buying it. FAA radars cannot have false returns being injected into them. Do you, by any chance, have a link to any video from this hearing. The conspiracy theories are bunk, but so is much of the official story. To someone who does this for a living, this does not add up.

Did you know that the 9-11 Commission Report said that Flight 93 was at something like 36,000' at the time cel-phone calls were made. The report says, just before that, that Flight 93s transponder had been shut off. So, how did they know its altitude at the time of those calls with no transponder?

Thats good question.How at 36,000 ft.were they able to point the plane towards Washington with no transponder to get tower help, and how did Chenney and Mineta know that the plane was headed for Washington, but FFA didn't even know where the plane was?

Actually, the transponder isn't required for navigation. How did they point the plane toward Washington DC? That's easy, they used the plane's GPS. All they have to do is punch in the 4 letter identifier of an airport in DC or the 3 letter identifier of a NAV aid there after hitting the "direct to" button. Switch the CDI to GPS and engage the autopilot, and the plane flies itself there. ;)

That's one of the easiest things to do. They had some confusion about the audio panel though, which is why they ended up transmitting to the outside world. That can be pretty confusing from one aircraft to another...we have airline pilots do that while flying bugsmashers all the time.

Before 9/11 we were trained and re-trained to use the 'common strategy' in hijackings - techniques developed after the rash of hijacks that began in the late 60's. The 'strategy' had nothing to do with suicide pilot hijackers. BTW, ATC and every one else in aviation were taught the same thing. SO, confusion and real disbelief were setting in at first...

This strategy worked prior to 9-11, since the hijackers prior to that day were supposedly "ready to die", but they preferred not to if it could be avoided. I agree...these guys KNEW they wouldn't go home alive, and this tactic took us completely by surprise. What do you think of this Ron Paul character and his insistence that the policy of non-resistance should never have been a policy?
