  • I swear, learning how to play D&D is like learning how to code or a language. I have all of the manuals and I have been reading them but I still feel so lost! I do not know anyone who plays. Only those who have heard of the game.

Thanks for the videos, I hope I can get this down. I would love to play.

  • You guys have to watch this video with captions on!!!!! not the worst i've seen but...

  • Do you have anything for 3rd edition

  • i am Dohvakihn DRAGONBORNE

  • So just last Week I started playing D&D with my friends. We're all new (and Level 2!), and we keep finding the mistakes were making but we're having loads of fun. I was wondering if you had any majorly important tips for DM.

Additionally our combat doesn't seem to have enough role play and can become dull at times because everyone's so focused on trying to get the stats and damage right, do you know any good ways to encourage role play in combat?

  • Fail I meant don't incorrectly correct someone.

  • @tannerslomko Yeah obvious typo = can't spell. And isn't it YouTube not Youtube? I know this isn't my argument and it's probably over already but don't correct someone with incorrect grammar.

  • do you each need a players handbook or can you share just 1 between everyone?

  • Have you considered doing reviews or just talking about other RPGs that are like D&D or use the same concepts? Such as D20 Modern and,if you happen to be a Star Wars fan, the Star Wars Rolplaying Game(preferably the Revised and Saga Editions)? It'd be nice and even a little helpful to hear whatever insight and opinions you have about them.

  • Good video, I'm trying to find some stuff to do in my past time. That is, when I don't have my laptop, or an ipod. My cousin in the Army plays this with some of his friends when they get bored, and I wanted to get involved with it a bit so I could join him whenever he comes home for his leave. Thanks man.

  • wow, DM. what an old show.

  • I need to buy 4th edition, i still have 2nd edition.

  • I have the "Book of Fiends" for 3.5 can I use this for fourth or must I use 3.5 rules.Or can I mix rules because I'm thinking of getting stared in dnd and I bought the wrong book.

  • i have player handbook 1 and 2 buti dont know how to play, my frends would play with me but i hope your vid helps

  • Could I make my own figurines out of clay or wood or use Lego minifigures?

  • @KyIernuva135Clone Absolutely! I've actually made lots of monsters out of polymer clay.

  • @repsesper hey man I'm 15 and I'm trying to get started in this game cus it looks really fun. How can I find groups to play with and what eddition do you sggest for beginners? BTW my friends are NOT into this kind of stuf.

  • @WastingTime4ever The first place to check is your local gaming stores. Talk to the owner and patrons, put up fliers. Next, check bookstores that carry D&D. Lastly, search online. And sometimes, you just have to get out there and get people interested. It's worth it, trust me.

  • @WastingTime4ever go to some stores and ask 2 play or make a resovation 2 play

  • @repsesper Is it possible to use, say, 4 pictures with slits in them (Top left and Bottom right), but them together to form a square and use that?

  • @KyIernuva135Clone thats how u have fun

  • Well... gee bro you might as well of said I quit getting laid about 5 years ago. lol.

  • @AZsportshut Just because someone plays D&D doesn't mean they don't get laid. I've been playing for 17 years and get laid plenty. Try again "bro"

  • @Silverheart4 With what or with who? Maybe you should get off the shrooms. lol. because the only people that I know play it are all cronic mastrubaters, who use their own tears as lubercant. Look I'm not tying to be mean, but if you look at the people who play it. Its hard for anyone to phathom that any girl would be interested in a guy who has a wild-dilusional imaginations about fighting off dragons in dungeons.

  • @AZsportshut First of all, why are you here, watching videos about a game that brings your sexuality into question? Are you that uncomfortable with who you are that you have to make fun of people who are interested in intellectual pursuits? Dude, both girls and guys are very much attracted and interested in nerdy/geeky pastimes. Get a clue, go BACK to your high school locker room delusions and leave us the hell alone. Oh, while we are at it, "fantasy sports" are no less geeky.

  • @Silverheart4 I'll be honest, I don't even know how I even got to this place. But since I know some people who play it I felt like I should comment on it. Personally, I don't get it (and I hope I never do). You look at the people who play this crap, and you see that most of them look like shit. Like they haven't bathed in days... no self respecting women would ever want to go out with losers. BTW I don't play "fantasy" sports, I play REAL sports; I'm not a jackoff like you. Sorry.

  • @AZsportshut Instead of watching videos that don't pertain to you, maybe you should pick up a kindergarten-level spelling book and study your ass off. I didn't know that fathom was spelled "phathom." I'd make fun of all the other mistake you made, but I don't have time like that right now.

  • @tannerslomko haha... this is YouTub dumbass, not 3rd grade grammar class. Perhaps you should get your head out of your ass. Oh wait... you don't have time for that.

  • @AZsportshut What's Youtub? Oh, you meant Youtube. I make it a point not to argue with someone who can't spell.

  • @tannerslomko Sorry, Mr. Grand Wizard. You must have ultimate spelling power. Good luck getting the ladies with that. lol.

  • @AZsportshut you guys collect "stats" just like we do, and "girls" or guys are no more or less interested in your imaginary collection of "dElusional", chronic masturbating over quarterbacks and "hail mary" receptions than you think they are in our pastimes.

  • @Silverheart4 Says the guy who goes off on his mystical horse to fight off dragons. lol.

  • @AZsportshut Pathetic, truly.

  • I have the 3.5 books. Is it better than the 4th edition?

  • How to play D&D?

    Step 1: Don't play 4th edition.

It sucks and isn't really D&D anymore.

  • Awesomeawesomeawesomeawesome!!!

  • @DarkDreamer444 There's mo restriction either way, although I'd suggest you kept your characters throughout your playing career. Especially to get to the Epic levels!

  • Just a bit of clarity...

Lets say hypothetically me and a few friends start up a campaign. We finish the campaign with high level characters, can we start up another campaign using the same characters, or are we supposed to create new characters?

I think a set of reoccuring heroes is awesome.

    Great video by the way!

  • @DarkDreamer444 With new players or a new DM start a new character but keep your character sheets of any living characters you've created. Within circles of familiar players and DM's groups can pick up where they left off. If a character dies, and is not raised from the dead you must create a new character and start over.

  • Well, 'repsesper' does a good job at summing the acute basics of the game up. He tells you exactly what the basic objective of the game could be, what you need to do to succeed, and, very basically, how to play an extremely simple game. Good to start out with if you have no other idea how to play.

  • Wow I totally want to play this!!!!!!!!!! My dad used to play it but it was so long ago he cant really remember what adventure he was on! I really like how you can create your own world and have an epic battle without getting hurt! This is definitely gonna be on my birthday wishlist.

  • Im in endgland and its not as well known in my school :(

  • @brightclaw11 yea they are welcome to all ages my dad still plays it and he's 57 yea I play with him it's really fun in our group as u might call it I'm a level 27 human fighter I encourage u to play go after the dreams My friend

  • I've wanted to play this game for ages and I finally found a group. Thanks for this video <3

  • hay man my "friends" think im kinda nerdy for this stuff but to tell you the truth thay just dont get this game and you helped me be ablle to tell them thanks!

  • cool i heard my local comic shop holds D&D events i might join in

im only 14 are they welcome to all ages?

  • entendi nda

  • Would you suggest that beginners start out on 3rd edition?

  • @salsadood you can also search 'celebrity dnd'..... they hav some videos of an encounter that was about an hour in total... most of it was pretty funny too

  • Comment removed

  • "dice and all that Jazz..."

  • @salsadood There's a great session up with the guys from Robot Chicken playing with the current creative head that's 2-3 hours long. A simple "dungeons and dragons robot chicken" search brings it right up. Enjoy!

  • Awesome video dude, well done!!!

  • After being inspired by your videos i went out and with great trouble (finding a DnD group in scotland is near impossible) found a DnD group and am now hooked so thank you

  • @TheLazEffect That's great! One of my favorite music groups is from Scotland- Boards of Canada.

  • @TheLazEffect Hey Im thinking of getting into this is your group based in glasgow?

  • @KoolJoshBoy my group is based in livingston sorry

  • @TheLazEffect That's funny. Scotland...

  • What i cant figure out is how do the players interact with the environment? For example if one wants to swim/climb/jump/search/spot/etc what minimum do they need to roll? Is it predefined or do you define it? If you define those rules, how do you do it?

I wanna try D&D with my friend (me being the DM), and then get some other friends to play, once/if i figure out the rules and get the story telling part down.

  • @DrQu4ntum The DM has a DC (difficulty class) that the players try to hit. It varies by the type of task or by the level of the adventure. The Dungeon Master's Guide explains it in detail.

  • @repsesper yeah, thanks, i got to that part now. this is all very hard to figure out lol. i guess it would be easier if i knew someone who already plays it :P

  • @DrQu4ntum Mostly you can just define it on the fly - just figure out how hard the task should be for the characters and use an Easy, Medium or Hard DC (all predefined for each level of characters) to set it.

If you want to run your own group, I heartily recommend buying or downloading a copy of the DND Essentials product, the Rules Compendium. It has everything you need on the rules of the game. Everything. Then download a PHB or become a dnd insider to build characters and get adventures.

  • @Stairc I knew D&D was complicated, but man oh man theres a complete science behind the game lol. And for someone that has only read two books in his life, and isnt good with math, this is a bit too much. Stupid D&D... making me read 300 pages a book before i can play... Im not complaining, the game is awesome, im just rambling a bit lol :P

I guess ill just have to learn the basics and then fine tune along the way.

  • @DrQu4ntum *laughs* It's actually really easy to pick up. The base mechanics of combat are pretty intuitive once you go over them once, and basically everything else is skill checks and DCs. The best way to get a hang of DMing well is to watch someone else do it. I'd check out the Celebrity dnd games if I were you - especially the PAX and Robot Chicken ones. They're run by the amazing Chris Perkins and are very fun to watch. Watch both and you'll have a solid idea on how to run an adventure.

  • @Stairc yeah, i bet id pick it up in no time if id join an existing group. im an experience learner. its hard for me to learn with books lol

  • I really wanna try this out one day.

Probably run a spellsword "gish" or however it is referred to as. I've seen a few guides on how to do it so far, but I was wondering how you (if you do) run a gish class. My main classes in most RPGs I play are Fighters/Warriors that do magic on the side, or support (I guess you can blame the Red Mages from FF looking so snazzy lol).

  • Nice video sir. It takes me back, i wish i had people to play with.

  • @scotlandloose Same )':

  • So at the back of the handbook is the sheet right? Cause I don't really see the purpose of paying for an account on a website...That doesn't set right with me hah.

  • @repsesper you cant dm and play at the same time? sad face...

  • ... I checked and the full version of char builder costs monthly.... Im going to stick with the books in that case :P

  • As a player, do you need the: Heroes of the forgotten kingdom and fallen lands? Or can you just buy the char creator for the comp? Also, is there anything else i would need? Or do you have any suggestions of what to get? Please someone reply. :D

  • ok... So i want to start playing dnd... I'm going to buy the:Dungeon tiles, monster vault and the core rules (rules compendium) do i really need the dungeon masters kit? It says: If you’re a D&D player interested in being a DM, or if you’re an experienced DM looking for more game advice, tools, and adventure content, the Dungeon Master’s Kit has exactly what you need to build your own campaign. Do i need it? (continue in comment 2 :P)

  • Hey Repsesper thanks heaps for this video... Finally a video that explains how it works..

  • I'm thinking about starting. I played a little adventure... more like a small skirmish thing... anyways I've been looking into this kind of stuff and Your video shows some of it. I currently play Warhammer and my uncle makes me think of adventures for his DM so I think all the monsters and stuff... I was wondering is there an easy way to learn, with a paper about like the basics? I think your videos are helpful and could you show an adventure fully played and showing dice... the spider attack...

  • great video. liked the way it was put together. helped me decide whether or not to start playing. thanks

  • i have a few questions how to tell how much health a monster has and how much dammage that monster dose to your health? & how do i tell how much i do to its health plz help :P

  • Hello repsesper,

I have a question on monmster knowledge checks. If a party passes a hard check, do you give game mechanic or narrative answers?

"Spider does 1d6 and poison vs attacks with poisonous bite". I find my players are looking for AC values etc.

Great channel. Thanks for any help.

  • @365ozy Always narrative answers. I do not speak in mechanical game terms, I use language that their characters might have heard in the world.

Example: "You know that this spider's bite carries an effective poison which causes the victim's body to become sluggish."

  • @repsesper Thanks for the reply. Your videos have helped a great deal.

  • Hello repsesper,

I have a question on monmster knowledge checks. If a party passes a hard check, do you give game mechanic or narrative answers?

"Spider does 1d6 and poison vs attacks with poisonous bite". I find my players are looking for AC values etc.

Great channel. Thjanks for any help.

  • hey Esper! Love your videos dude! Anyway I was wondering if you had any expierience with DnD Encounters? It's like a thing held at game stores. I don't know much about it, but I'm looking into it. It's me and my brother in my group right now. lol

  • @localskateboarding I haven't played D&D Encounters yet, though a local store asked if I could DM for it. I'd like to at least play in it at some point for fun.

  • @repsesper thanks. you should try it. could be fun

  • Where does one get miniatures? the wizards of the coast site is really hard to navigate... are they like "this is an elf" "this is a dragonborn" or can you get like a race and class and that miniature is different from others of the same race?

  • @ratherconfused There are lots of websites which sell them, just like any retail product. Google "D&D minis".

  • @repsesper can the DM play as DM and a player if you don't have enough people.

  • @repsesper can i get the books minis and tiles from gamers workshop?

  • Hey, Esper, does your group use the Light/medium/heavy load and encumbrance thing? my group doesn't. we just kinda use common sense when it comes to what a person can carry.

  • With the extra books with more classes, do all the players need to extra book or just the one using the class, or the DM?

  • Well Wikipedia is not the best source, people can edit the wiki to read anything that they desire it to...I would recommend WotC website, the people there can help you with anything, and it has a demo for newer players!

  • @actinoidify Edits have to be cited for sources or they are undone. Handy tool called the History tab to reverse vandalism.

  • @TheBrendanMcCoy I still think that people can get past being caught, people just don't play by the rules, and it sucks for the rest of us, who do follow the rules... But vandalism that can't be caught by the site's admins or the server (whatever catches vandalism) can be solved easily, everytime I make a wiki post, I keep a spare duplicate of that post, in a folder as a text document (.RTF) and once vandalism occurs, I just copy and paste...I regularly clean my history while I use CCleaner...

  • Hey Repsesper i am making a D&D club at my school mind if i can ask you a few questions about the game?

  • My players dont want to put money into there own players handbook or dice, and it really piss me off.. : they always have to borrow my books and dice and it takes alot of times when evereybody wants to look at there own class in one book.. -.-''

  • I might get into this game, i have some questions. Could I decide the numbers for my character alone and then go to my first d and d tournament and join a team, and my only team is at the tournament and I only play their? Is this game hard and complicated, and was it hard to memorize the rules and stuff?

  • this really didn't explain much

  • Hey repsesper

I'm trying to find a D&D adventure book with bat showin on the book cover, and in the end of the pages there are tokens to crop like sea of lost souls etc

Do u know what name of this adventure book is? thanks

  • @MrOutPsycho Nothing comes to mind. Have you tried Google image?

  • @repsesper yea i tried searching for it but never found it, maybe one day ill find it haha

  • Im 16 and live in England it is harder to get into DnD here than the US 'I assume' where I live there are no hobbie stores or local groups that sell or play the game.

I have bought the 'Red Box', 'DM kit' and the 'Monster Vault' but then found it hard to get a group together to play. I have created a school club for RPG's in general I hope to get 3 more people together to try a full game with me DMing once or twice a week. I hope this helps people in school or college create a group easier

  • Hey esper, i recently became an insidef but my character builder update wont finish no matter how much time i wait, what do i need to do to dl it right?

  • it looks funny , i live in argentina , here , 1 of 10 persons only estudies english , and i cant get the books , nobody plays the game here , im so lonely...

  • @TheMdlukas Surely D&D is printed in Spanish as well. Have you looked into this?

  • @repsesper ya but nobody cares about roll!

  • hey i have no one to play this game around where i live and i was wondering if there is any place to go on the internet and join a party online

  • Comment removed

  • 7 people are affraid of dragons

  • TY for the video!!! I'm stoked to get some miniatures and the books. Where can you get miniatures? I know online but are there any other places?

  • With the dice and all that jazz. hahahaha

  • In Holland, there is absolutely NOBODY who plays this game. I would actually be suprised if I saw a book about DnD in a store here. But I want to play it so badly :'(

  • @fortunos Wow...I would be sad too. Maybe you can get a game together online? At least you can be a part of the adventure videos on my channel!

  • @repsesper you can play on line cool whats the site called plz

  • Comment removed

  • @fortunos There's plenty of people playing this game in the Netherlands. There are game stores in several larger cities.

  • Comment removed

  • @ankya2 Really? I live in Amsterdam, but I don't know ANYONE who plays it... But this gives me hope, now I just have to find some books.

  • @fortunos wanna start an online group with me? I also don have anyone to play with...

  • Comment removed

  • @Roundfull hey could i possibly join ur d&d groupif u have one?

  • @abe923 i dont have one but i would be interested in starting one. Do you know how to play?

  • @Roundfull ya i know how to play

  • @abe923 Sry offer stands no more

  • @Roundfull y? did u decide to not do it anymore?

  • @abe923 Dont have the time anymore sorry...

  • @fortunos You have to search better. Search for gaming (non-video) stores in the major city near you and they'll probably be able to point you to a group. You can also just ask friends if they want to try it out.

  • @fortunos

    Waar in Nederland woon je?

  • @fortunos I'll be more than happy to call BS on this one. Every month there's a meetup in amsterdam, I think it's now in the ABC treehouse, and there's at least 1 game of 4e going on. Oh yea, and ABC promotes and runs RPGA events. And there's loads of game stores through the NL that has the books.

  • @fortunos And if you're anywhere near Almere, I have an opening in my game. Though it's not D&D.

  • 4ed is great. its the same dnd without all the mess getting in the way. It all comes down to how you play it. I have played them all and 4th is best for me.

  • im playing my first game ever tomorrow and this has been very helpful thank you :D

  • Wrong pictures, you should have put 3.5 edition covers. 4th edition is world of wacraft on paper, it kills the fantasy instead of making it wider!

  • @DungeonsItalia I've had the completely opposite experience. I'm currently working on something special (hint: review + 4e). You might check out my adventure videos and see what you think about the fantasy and storytelling.

  • Comment removed

  • @repsesper cinematics? I never used them

  • This blows. I want to try this game out, but I literally know no body around my town who plays it. The game looks so fun too. Moving to new places sucks ass.

  • @Highcaliber360 where do u live:)...( yes i am a stalker)

  • @Highcaliber360 If there is a comic book shop around you, they usually will have a lead on finding a gaming group. Or... if you're looking for a 4e group, I'm pretty sure that you can use Wizards of the Coast's forums for local gaming.

  • @Manjikoa That's the problem. There is a store the next town over, but I can't find it. Tried to use Google and Garmin, but that screwed me over. Ordered a player handbook and the starter set, so I'll mess with that while I still look for the store. Where can I find the Wizards of the Coast forums?

  • @Highcaliber360 go to wizards.com click on the dungeons and dragons section, then click on community on the top right corner. You'll see a drop down click on the group page

  • As an experienced DnD player I would like to offer my thanks for creating an informative video for people who are new to DnD or are considering it. This is the best video I've seen yet.

  • haha you dont need wiki to see how dnd shaped rpg gaming XD ive seen alot of games that use dice for attacks and stuff :D

  • I'd love to see a character set up guide, thanks I'm really considering looking in to this now

  • i want to do this thanks for making this

  • 4th edition = money pit

3.5 edition stoped because with a torent u had everything u needed to play ( only dices missing )

with the 4th edition u have to go back to the store and pay .... dont pay , play

  • @gloup81 I just torrented all the 4e stuff.

  • Its a shame that D&D just doesnt happen here in the UK. Drives me crazy that only USA have the great conventions and even E3!

  • @keith23uk you'd be suprised, there is a pretty big but very low key D&D event in Birmingham each august, but yeah... the UK keeps it very closeted like the US did in the 80's.

  • Fantastic! Thankyou for the vid!

  • Actually, being a DM is not as hard a job as alot of people think.

It becomes extremely easy if you are good at improvising.

  • so i can choose any kind of figure to represent my character?

  • @elementwaef Really, it is up to you. A lot of people like miniatures that look like their character, for obvious reasons, but just use whatever works.

  • @elementwaef you don't have to use figures, with 3.5 I used thimbles for pc and arasers for monsters, colors represented a different type.

  • @BillyCauseyjr board = stricted play ... i prefer monopoly rather 4e

  • cleric is my favorite class! XD

  • Thanks! On saturday nights my friends go this comic store (They hold D&D playing) without me because they never told me until one day they did. And im like what and how do you play it? Their answer was just it's hard to explain (Because I tihnk it is). So I watched this video and now I know.

  • I need help with powers. When a power says something like this: Hit: 2 [W] + strength modifier damage, and you can spend a healing surge.

What does 2 [W] mean in the power? Please tell me!! It wood help me alot!

  • @EvilJaime [W] means Weapon Dice. It acts just like if you hit the bad guy with your weapon. 2[W] means that you strike twice with your weapon.

Let's say your weapon is a Greataxe. It have a weapon dice of 1d12. So your power deals 2d12+strength.

  • A really good introduction. Sparked my interest ^^ Thanks a lot

  • if u play by yourself do u have to have both the players handbook and the DMG and the monster manual book?

  • can you use legos? just wondering

  • @supernerd1996 Yah, go for it. I'd actually quite like to see that.

  • lord of the rings soundtrack in the background lol :D

  • i like this video, its interesting
