According to IMDB, this version of the film with music by the Alloy Orchestra follows the written instructions from the director, Dziga Vertov. The Alloy music is in my opinion much more in sync with the images and style of the film than the jazz version. Here, when the music gets going, it is at times
vertov (the director of this movie) believed that film could reproduce the reality exactly and because you could edit that reality, it had the power to manipulate people. this idea also called "kingo-glaz" which is cinema-eye.
I might as well give this film some "contrasting" feedback than the rest of the wanna-be intellectual film critics: WTF! dat wuz some weird ass shiet!! made no fuckin sense! plus, the music sucked! They should've presented it as it was first intended to be presented as; SILENT!!
@bboydee sorry to inform you, but silent movies were not intendet to be silent, in every movie theatre there was a orchestra to accompany the film with music. and of course it makes no sense, it is an experimental film. In the original titles (sadly they are not shown here) he acctually declares that this should not be narrative at all. It is a try to establish internatinal film technique. This movie was an imprtant step to the montage you see today in almost every movie!
it seems that in this particular version of this movie there are some parts that has been edited out. The woman who seems to be the protagonist has a longer screen time in the original film.
i watched a clip from what i thought was this film in class, it was a man in a cart with a camera following other carts along a road and filming them. the music was upbeat, is that this film :S
yes if the criteria can be applied to the strictly visual film... visual metaphors, rhythmic cuts, visual candy(instead of symbolic candy). The images and various juxtapostions are often rich with connotations
actually the film was originally released with music. Also, the alloy orchestra uses instructions for the music as specified by Vertov. Vertov is noted for his talent with sound as well as cinematography
Actually this version is the one taken directly from Vertov's notes about what the score should be. So this version is the closest to what he intended.
Really great piece of silent film. Vertov was a true genius. The "Kino-eye" technique is truly amazing. The Prophet of Cinema Verite. The music makes it so much more powerful then it would have. A great Auteur of Subliminal also. lol

reminiscent of Prokofiev and very exciting.

@SiriusIsNotDead1989 that comment was a joke. haha Though I still think it was a terrible choice of music. But thank you for the insight.

Why the sound track- I think it adds another layer of manipulation that Vertov didnt intend...
I wanted to watch a silent or projector sounding Vertov!

Fine film. It's nice to see how Russia looked during that time. Interesting that the film came out the same time as "Un Chien Andalou".
