The first time I've ever heard this song was years ago when I bought the DVD. I still haven't heard the original, and I probably never will. I love this one too much to care!
Neil Young is undeniably amazing, however I am very skeptical that there is a better played version of this song than this one. If there is, please point me in the right direction... because I have to hear it.
Whilst this is a good version of Cortez, there is only one man who plays and sings this as it was meant to be, and that is the songwriter Mr Young ....and I'm sure these guys recognise it too. Maybe they did the cover as respect for Neil.
@oscartmic satch is great but the trumpet player drowns him out. and grace better than dave? no way. this song needs a deep powerful voice. she is good but same with neil young it sounds better low.
Cool backdrop but enough is enough. For the first two minutes when theyre both killing it, the cameras focused on...the skyline. fuck that. Let me see em play.
The 4 who gave a thumbs down must be under 12 or blind, deaf and DUMB !! This is one of the best videos I have EVER had the pleasure of hearing ~ I was not a DMB fan til now... Warren Haynes, well, have a whole new respect for now !
@xTiLkx I agree, I was actually thinking the same thing. Check out the version with Grace Potter and Joe Satriani. Absolutely no phrasing issues in that version whatsoever (how could there be? lol)
@xTiLkx I actually came here from the Potter/Satch version, and I like this one as well. Warren and Satch are from different schools, but I admire both of them. It all depends on my mood, I suppose.
Just when I thought I couldn't dislike dave matthews any more, I come across this! This guy and his band are just terrible. If he ceased to exist, music in the world would be better.
I love this shit - we need to bring rock n roll back to the masses , and good music in general - Fuck this pop miley cyrus , justin bieber shit , this is music

I can't play guitar very good but i've dedicated all my guitar time to learning this song, listened to this in my teen years even though it was older than me it was the perfect mix of sadness and strength. love this song and warren hayne takes this performance, love dave but you didn't need to sing bro, warren had it. listen to his performance of soulshine on opie and anthony it's fantastic.
They all must've had a Neil Young blood transfusion before the show...

you have to approach this song like your fingers are bleeding from playing all night, your voice is in tatters, John Lennon got shot today, you're not sure if she'll stay...
...the stars are fu@#ing extinguished, and the sky has a dagger of light in it because the sunrise is just around the corner...
@CharlieKendallMusic just came here from that version, couldn't agree more. Satch is great, but he's too technical and contained to play a Neil Young lead line. These guys probably can't shred like him, but they turn out a better song.

So you believe that they haven't made something great after having been inspired by a fellow artist? Again, they aren't trying to replicate his song or his style. In fact, they took it to their own level, adding aspects and taking others out. Comparing apples and oranges, you are, my friend. Try to see (listen rather) it for what is is now, today, right in front of you. Neil isn't singing this song, Dave Matthews and Warren Haynes are.
@tearvialfilms great call tearvial matthews and haynes just dilute what neil wrote. I do not understand the attraction for dave matthews either. Its boring, redundant and unambitious. Matthews picked a song way above his limited ability to cover, only artist I have heard that does a neil young song justice is roy buchanan playing down by the river. He is not reading the words, but it's the way he plays. He put's a lot of feeling into his songs, so he is closing his eyes, making the song meaningful to him. But I see what you mean
This is a subdued Warren for the most part. He's one of the greatest guitarist current and for alltime. Gov Mule, Allman's and about anyone that needs one of the best guitarists there is. I prefer Warren's lead to Satriani's but Joe was stellar too.
This song, has enlightened me to be and incredible guitarist. Warren Haynes (guitarist and singer for the Alman Brothers) is incredible, his voice switching off half verses with Dave, sounds so damn good. Dave Matthews is incredible. The way he covered this song (originally Neil Youngs) and played it with a soft chorus followed by a very distorted intense, yet melodic solo, spoke to me. And of course Carter Beauford on drums, is my musical insperation on Drums did a incredible job
I think a lot of the argument about who played with more this and that would go away if you stuck that Paul in Satriani's hands. He's every bit the same kind of emotive player, but at this level, tone plays a huge part, and that old gibbie sound is what this song was based on originally, and there's something about an edgy high gain metal guitar that will never get to the guts of a song like this.
That's a good, well-rounded point you have Naradajim. And I dissagree with it entirely. When great musicians play other great musician's songs, they make the song their own. It's what brings me back to this song over and over again. I do not think Dave nor Warren are trying to be Neil. They've done a damn fine job.
@VeritasAlienari somehow you missed my good, well rounded point. please read my message again. Very few people would try to play this on an Ibanez or Jackson. They are what they are, and good for what they do, but they don't have the visceral guts that a Les Paul has. Warren brings the power, and this song has to have that. He never sounds thin. My point was that Satriani's playing is agile AND emotive, but you can't pull the guts with a high tech, active guitar. It's analog vs digital.
I don't know which sound I'm denouncing so readily. For the record, I don't and will not ever own a guitar with active pickups and that thin, overpowered but under expressive tone.
No offense to DMB fans, which I'm sure they'll will take offense, but Warren Haynes has forgotten more about music than Dave will ever learn about playing or singing. He's a true master musician. If you like the 2 of them together though they're doing I think 4 or 5 dates together this summer.
This song, has enlightened me to be and incredible guitarist. Warren Haynes (guitarist and singer for the Alman Brothers) is incredible, his voice switching off half verses with Dave, sounds so damn good. Dave Matthews is incredible. The way he covered this song (originally Neil Diamonds) and played it with a soft chorus followed by a very distorted intense, yet melodic solo, spoke to me. And of course Carter Beauford on drums, is my musical insperation on Drums did a incredible job
Recently, I stumbled onto the The Dave Matthews Band's Live In Central Park Video while shopping and right away, my immediate impression was WOW! they are freaking great so I took a chance and bought the DVD. After the first time watching it, I discovered Warren Haynes. I'd never heard of him before either. Warren Haynes is a guitarist supreme. He's fantastic in Cortez The Killer. Hooray for the Dave Matthews Band and Warren Haynes.
