mabye he was looking for others flipping his way..see the 1971 Andretti werck and notice the workers behind the car that was hit..one of them is the driver for that truck in that station.
Originally the Hornish crash was looking more dangerous. However, Hornish some got out of his car from that position and went on to take pole, lead three-quarters of the race and finish third. Amazing! What happened to Paul Dana was very sad as there were umpteen crashes like this in IndyCar. R.I.P Paul Dana.
you can see the debris on the track. You can see the bit of debris he hits, it looks like a small little speck on the road, but its there, you can see it. Once you get air underneath the wings of downforce cars they normally shoot up into the air, that bit of debris was all it needed to get air under the wings! (indycars are aerodynamically upside down aircraft almost :P)
In sam's case the car drove over some debris and that caused air to come underneath his car, that liftes the car up at a speed of more than 200mph. It was almost the same what happend to Mario Andretti while practising for the 2003 Indy 500, his car also got airborn but he was allright as well.
Also sad what happend to Paul Dana later he wasn't a lucky guy he had more than one bad crash in his Life. RIP Paul
If this sounds ignorant I apologise, but do Indycars have the ground-effect that was banned in F1? It's all that "getting airborne" that makes me wonder...
all the good guys have to die :(

I'm sorry that i say this but it doesn't look like a hard crash, is he died in the crash or in the hospital
Hanjin13 1 year ago
@Hanjin13: No, he died a year later in a crash with Carpenter at Homestead. He died in 2006, March 26th, this was for the Indy 500 in 2005.

its wierd . i have no clue what happened to Hornish. it seemed like he was just fine and suddenly he took off... literaly
SIMIHIGH2008 3 years ago
my guess is that he hit some debris that made the front of the car go up a little and a bunch of wind just got underneath the car and fliped it over.

@SIMIHIGH2008 he ran over what was left of Dana's gear box. It looks like just a speck from this perspective, but it's a pretty solid item.

He hit debris and flies like a kite!? What the heck is wrong with those cars? Very sorry about Paul Dana later. Very sad.

Theres nothing wrong with those cars, they arent meant to get airborne, including hitting debris.
