  • @Iknowrightawesome lmaoooo

  • lets pour cake mix

seems to attract a third element

    fatkids

  • Excellent demonstration.

  • so your the bastard thats been polluting our waters! :O

  • @SuperCrazyIdiot good oneee

  • @skillian09 bit delayed, faggot?

  • @SuperCrazyIdiot Bit obsessed with faggots, asshole?

  • @fuduzan5562 um no, not really, but taking from your comment, im guessing you're a bit obsessed with asshole yourself?

  • Comment removed

  • the oil spill wasn't very calming...

  • Water pollution!! XD

  • omfg amazing

  • Wow, I didn't expect the effect to spread over the entire body of water! That was pretty impressive.

  • i use vegetable oil

  • I'm going to apply this video to my life

  • The Gulf of Mexico must be all sorts of calm this time of year!

  • if oil calms the water by reducing the friction of air against the water would this also increase the wind speed and if so what would a hurricane wind speed do if it crossed over the oil slick in the gulf?

  • poseidon will swallow you

  • could this have implications fr gulf coast spill??

    l

  • @npbreakthrough Nope, the oil in the gulf is magical and does not conform to the laws of physics. In fact, that oil is actually unicorn semen

  • thanks for vid

  • So the exxon oil spill actually helped save penguins from drowning in the rough sea? I see.

  • someone help me - i am trying to do this experiment, however wen i pour the small amount of oil onto the water, it stays in one measly blob in the centre of the container.

HOW DO YOU GET SUCH A SMALL AMOUNT OF OIL TO SPREAD OUT ACROSS THE WHOLE SURFACE OF THE WATER? my research tells me it should spread out till its one monomolecular layer thick...

  • How big of a body of water are you using? Is there any wind?

  • @jordyfatnoodle one monomolecular is repetitively redundant

  • I love science

  • That's pretty interesting.

  • There is a similar effect when a colored man goes swimming. The greases they leak, which also contribute to their nappy hair, form a greasy film on the surface of the water which reduces wind generated ripples.

  • Cool vid !

Is there anything you can pour in the water that does the opposite ? :D

  • well, soap would break up the oil, I think.

  • @Jeroenske Magnesium?

  • @Jeroenske Yes, you can put alkaloïdes in water ;)

  • @StickerMedia yesssss hahahhaa

  • @Jeroenske u need light liquid that can flow above the water which can not be diluted in the water, and not thicker than the water xD

  • WHOA ARE YOU SERIOUS??!! That was pretty damn cool!

  • There is a feature film called 'Oil on Water' based on this calming effect. Nice video.

  • wow epic fail...

  • Well, I have no idea what this is good for but it's faszinating.

  • why is you

tubes screen wider any one having the screen bigger plz reply

  • It was updated a short while back to allow higher resolution videos (or high def/high definition videos if you want to call it that)

  • dont let the epa see this video. they will execute you knowing how extreme those people are.

  • Um, SUNFLOWER OIL! biodegradable

  • It doesn't matter if SUNFLOWER oil is BIODEGRABLE more than motor oil.

It's all about preventing OXYGEN TRANSFER from the water and air.

This IS polluting and damaging. Don't do it.

  • Don't u need plants in the water to produce the oxygen ? I dont see any plants in this puddle so I'm pretty sure no OXYGEN TRANSFER was prevented here and no damage done.

  • Uhm, dude, Water = H2O, 2 parts hydrogen and 1 part OXYGEN! Did you pass grade 5 yet? If you did, I suggest you redo it.

  • Did you? How does the oxygen escape the hydrogen in the water without a catalyst like a plant? So no oxygen is produced and no harm is done to the environment. I think thats simple enough for even u to understand.

  • I was originally replying to ettips comment that the oil was preventing oxygen transfer from the water. But since there are no plants in the water no oxygen is being released.

  • Have u ever bought anything other than food? U must have because u have u computer to post this comment. And because u have, u have contributed to worldwide pollution because EVERTHING that is made, clothing, electronics, pottery, metal, plastics, etc., produces large amounts of pollution. So stop worrying about little things like oil on water and stop buying things that are really destroying the planet. I personally believe its inevitable, so party on dudes, enjoy it all while it lasts. :P

  • Even to a puddle that will evaporate tomorrow? Honestly I dont think a shallow parking lot puddle has too much to offer, what with all the existing motor oil around.

  • what a dumbass. anything processed artificially when not handled properly will have effect on the environment.

oil has a drastic effect on plankton which makes up for part of the food chain.

    please go educate yourself

  • and by educate, he means kill yourself and i second that notion.

  • what the hell is this meant to prove?

  • that you're an imbecile. looks like it worked.

  • YOU NOOB.

  • I think you should watch psidot's other videos before you make the assertion that this demonstration was some kind of hoax. The impression I get is that he or she is an engineering student or has already graduated.

  • stop polluting the earth,u ass

  • LOL He's not polluting the Earth - he's using SUNFLOWER oil, NOT motor oil! LAWLZ.

  • lol itiot

  • how much oil over how much surface to establish the effect?

  • woah sweet, ty for posting vids like there, you're awesome

  • With enough sunflower oil, we could calm the whole world.

    Just a thought.

  • thats cool

  • am i being hypocritical and complaining of him killing the ocean? go join peta... my sister is in peta and cares less about life than i do

  • you should scroll down and read these comments. Funny ass kids arguing over a puddle.

  • P.S. That little bit of sunflower oil probably killed millions of mosquito eggs, so the young man did the environment, animals & people good.

  • Benjamin Franklin did this. The oil relieves the surface tension of the water. In mining you have to add a little dish soap to the water or gold flakes will float.

  • thats trippy

  • what is the quantity of the oil you let in the water??

  • It doesn't matter if SUNFLOWER oil is BIODEGRABLE more than motor oil.

It's all about preventing OXYGEN TRANSFER from the water and air.

This IS polluting and damaging. Don't do it.

  • great trick for fishing

  • that was so cool!

    ^_^

  • THIS VIDEO WASN'T INTENDED FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU!! Go watch some dull videos, why don't you??

  • Wow, I like how the stupidity in the comments slowly escalated to epic levels. Firstly, does no one bother to read back? It's fucking sunflower oil, it's not polluting. They're pouring it in a puddle for christsakes. Those of you who think it's fake, we don't care. Get off your ass, try it. And to all of you jackasses who presume yourselves to be smarter than the average commenter, take your shit elsewhere. I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets tired of your uppity banter and bullshit.

  • I don't think it was about the oil but i have seen some morons calling it an oil spill and pollution. What you see below is a result of some punk kid trying to correct a mechanical and flow dynamics engineer. 8AV8today was trying to explain the process and it's limitations very politely and the kid just went ape shit and spewed verbal diarrhea on 8av8's explanation. Then the kid tried to keep going till he got his ass torn in half by the pro's. Makes sense? It's like tagging on some ones art.

  • HAHAHA! I'm sorry, did you just say pro's? HAHAHA! oh my god, thanks for that, that gave me a good laugh.

  • (Message sent to me because he didn't respond to the video)

Uh... Buddy. There is no need to get abrasive and throw insults. By the way, The word is "AQUA-PHOBIC". It depends where it's coming from but means the same thing. as far as the low tension, You are seriously mistaken. The oil clumps and stay together. When oil is extremely diluted to a 10:1 ratio then it is possible. Again, to a certain degree.

  • You are one insulting unevolutionized trilobite. 8Av8today is right on the money with his equation and explanation. He was trying to tell you in a mature and non confronting manner. Man, you read one book about chemistry and distribution and you think you know it all. Yes, I too know it as "AQUA-PHOBIC". "Hydro" is used to describe mechanical processes and compositions relating to using water and water protocols. "Aqua" is used properly for this simple experiment and explanation. Fucking IDIOT.

  • I think it's time for you to shut the fuck up and go make stick figures for your stupid channel somewhere in shiltland.

Your eye colors says: Sh*t Brown.

Know why? Cuz you're full of shit!

"Aqua-Phobic" is right by the way.

You use Hydro to explain what you are going to do with the water. Hence, Hydro-phonics,Hydro-therapy,Hydro cutting,Hydrogen(via electrolysis) and so on. You get the picture? Now go draw a stick figure about it and the shove it up your puckered uptight ass. Imbecile.

  • Oh wow, holy shit, I didn't even notice this comment, and to think, I was about to let you get away with it, damn!

    Ok,

    1) Your response has NOTHING to do with the argument at hand, you're just shouting random crap in a feeble attempt to insult me. The reason for the shit brown thing is because I have an inferiority complex, except when it comes to people like you. You make me feel so much better about myself.

    2) Go ahead and argue with the English dictionary, see if I care!

  • You sure are one stubborn glutton for pain.

    Aquaphobic: adjective

abnormally afraid of water [syn: hydrophobic]

    Ague with that buddy.

And don't come to me about the "shit brown eye inferior complex". Take it to Oprah or Dr. Phil

As far as insulting you (feeble attempt) I don't think so. I does not take much with your inferiority complex. Fool.

  • You know little man, Your stupidity just hit rock bottom and has started to dig.

I can't waste my time any further with a wikipedia amateur and scum under a rock. Everyone now know you are stupid and as full of shit as your eye levels can tell. Do us all a favor, go home and draw more stick figures about the verbal ass-whooping you got on Youtube today. Then cut your throat and make sure you stop breathing. You are wasting the precious air of truly educated men and women. You feeble Arthropod.

  • wow someone is totally overreacting, and being a total jerk.

  • Woah, what was that about? You ok?

Now why is it so personal?

  • Yeah, sorry if you have to see this but I had posted a comment simply specifying that the experiment works but only to limited amount in relevance with the dilution of the oil and the surface mass. Then this 17yr old idiot responds to my comment and calls me names then tells me I wasted my college money without any provocation. Hence, I had to bust out with a can of whoopass.

  • Ha, completely understood lol, i don't like jumping to conclusions which most people would have lol..

Anyways, if you did reply to him, i know how annoying youtube can be, as it sometimes does not reply and adds it as a comment instead :P

    Cya!

  • can of whoop-ass? Sorry, my ass has not been whooped. All I saw was the ranting of an insecure college grad that only finds his stones in Dane Cook-esque shouting, telling me to kill myself. Also, something went wrong and you must not have gotten the other comment that had me SAYING I was wrong about the sunflower seed oil, this was supposed to be a 2 part reply on your original comment but part one ended up here and part 2 never got posted. That being said, look up hydrophobic in the dictionary

  • Your explanation makes perfect sense buddy. You know your stuff and don't let that kid get under your skin. He's just punk asshole throwing his two cents to sound like he understands science experiments. Keep up the good work.

8AV8TODAY is 100% right with his equation and explanation in relevance to the proper distribution of the oil and the surface mass provided.

  • Damn, that's funny as FUCK!!! "Wanna get a drink later" HA HA!

  • I freakin' love Pink Floyd.... "Careful With that Axe, Eugene"

  • Jeezues, quick someone call the EPA, ASAP. Dangnabbit son that teaspoon of sunflower oil just destroyed over 100 square miles of the natural habitat of the North American Thick Lipped Big Eared Sap Sucking Fat Ass Rabblerouser. Also known as the Yellow Bellied Dumbshit Extremist Environmentalist in some scientific circles. They naturally flourish in places where the education system is weak and poorly designed. And once you are infested they are real hard to get rid off.

  • Quit fucking arguing over the fucking internet. Jesus Christ

  • just kidding

  • give me some gasoline and I'll show ya fire on the water.

  • Even 'crude black sludge' is organic. It is completely organic.

Oil comes out of the ground you know.

And even if this guy could somehow get his hands on pure crude oil, who cares? It is a puddle in a parking lot.

Really it is the environmentalist attitude on display in these comments that is the reason we have $4.00 a gallon gas and high prices on foods and services.

  • hey guys have you seen the black hand? It's a short film episode i made. Please check it out and give me your thoughts on the movie. It's at my youtube profile. Thx

  • FAKE becuz a bucket of oil it wud stop tsunami but it wont so thsi is fake. Busted!1

  • Has anyone noticed the seahorse shadow in the foreground??

  • Jawblues I don't think you're being very logical. If it was 'fake' wind, then why does it sweep across the lake gradually, and how on earth would they achieve that effect without moving a fan over the top of the lake (which you would obviously see in the camera!!). Also, it would have to be a very good camera for you to see the guys hair blowing on his shadow!!

  • dood yer uh effin homo ;)

  • shut up all you moaners and take your hand out your arse. Any carp fisherman will know that you put sunflower oil on your dog biscuits to make a ripple on the water go calm when surface fishing.

  • y cant everyone just stop argueing? its a cool effect ok? if u havent got anything nice to say dont say anything at all! its not hard to keep your mouth closed!

  • dogeatscrap, I probably wouldn't feel so good, obviously.

However, try cooking with motor oil and tell me how well that goes. :) If you live to tell the tale without medical attention, let me know. Your point is void because it still doesn't prove vegetable oil is harmful in any way to the environment. You've lost this debate. kthxbai.

  • makes one wonder if this works in the human body as well. calming ones own waters. :)

  • This is 100% real! Try it for yourself. The oil is less dense than the water so it floats and spreads out over the surface of the puddle. I've done this my self

  • ohh i get it now, i thought it meant it was supposed to calm you.

  • your knowledge of science is balls

  • Try this knowledge of science, beyotch:

    1. This is pollution, it D O E S N ' T matter if it is sunflower OIL or motor OIL, all OILS stop the water/air OXYGEN TRANSFER

    2. It has NOTHING TO DO WITH BIODEGRADABILITY. I am NOT, repeat NOT talking about fucking oil being BIODEGRABLE.

    Stop polluting

  • coming from someone with the youtube name..anus2mouth......fucking geek i bet you don't even get ass lmao..

  • LOL. I am going to rip off your head, shit down your neck, girlfail, and calm the waters in your tummmy via the turd oils in my feces. Any questions, queerbait?

  • oo you said i fail? wow get of WoW and youtube and go get laid fucking homo.queerbait? lmao kid comments over youtube don't offend me.. sorry.

  • Don't go away mad, just go the fuck away.

  • lol mad? ok?

  • looked like he succesfully offended you too me. Ironic.

  • lol not really kinda made me laugh.

  • This is a simple trick that I used a lot when I used to clean pools.

  • thats what i said ty for saying it agian. THeir alot of Idiots here. Its a Artiffical Wind as you can see. They filmed no trees because there was no wind

  • exactly, jawblues has got it right, even look at the person's shadow, hair is not blowing or anything b/c its not real wind

  • Ty you for your usefull input poops1.

    Touche for the uploader!

  • there is no shadow of a person, that's the shadow of the camera. very simple to replicate this is 100% real

  • Nice video example of a physic effect, with the unexpected result of proving how poorly educated many people are. Good on ya.

  • ummmmm...wrong

  • Its like the onset of death

  • For those who continue to doubt the authenticity of my video and the very realness of such effect will be surprised to learn that no less than a whole book is devoted to such a subject by Charles Tanford. His book is entitled: "Ben Franklin Stilled the Waves: An informal history of pouring oil on water with reflections on the ups and downs of scientific life in general" (Oxford, 2004).

  • like oil on water, republicans try to use CHRISTIANITY to sooth over their destruction of America. Republicans are for the subjegation and denigration of women into second class citizens by trying to make abortions illegal. This forces women into back alley abortions with clothes hangers and they often hemmorage and die. Good job republicans. If men got pregnant you bet your ass that abortions would not only be legal but state funded.

  • Anus2Mouth you are so correct in what you have said. How can so many people not see through what they are doing? How can there still be so many sheeple?

  • why does every stupid human being use youtube and think they're entitled to comment?

  • I DIDNT realize before that you used vegatable oil....oops, my bad. didnt realize. very cool effect.

  • Firstly it was vegetable oil, it had no lasting effect, and causes no damage, also, it was on a puddle, nobody's going to put it on a lake. Theres no need in making life more difficult for you and your 28ft boat.

  • I was actually asking a question to the maker of the video to confirm what i was saying was right or wrong. Hence the question mark.

    Example:

How do you justify mocking my intelligence when you clearly failed to read my post properly?

    See. Knob.

And feel free to reply, but it took so long finding your shitty comment i cant be arsed to do it again.

  • Holy COW!!!

  • it's fucking real!

  • try this - fill up a glass of water half way. stir it violently or shake it and immediately pour in some oil. reply with your results thanks.

  • That is amazing how such a small amount of oil can do that. Nice demonstration.

  • that small about of oil is still pollution. IT's not about biodegradable it's about oxygen transfer being blocked

  • It's just a puddle of water. It's not like it's one of the Great Lakes.

  • Yes, that is true. That is what is so amazing and scary about it.

  • it doesnt pollute a signifigant amount.if ur worried about pollution, stop drivivng a car. worry about something that actually matters.

  • Wow! I'm sure you'd LOVE for me to make a witty remark on your stupidity right now, but you know that I'm ignoring you. So there.

  • wow, new thing learnt

    many thanks

  • Maybe you'll learn how to spell next time.

  • suck a dick...can you read that?

  • so very interesting

  • ... pollution-much... but cool

  • wow i didn't know that a spoonful of sunflower oil did so much damage to our planet. damn these mad scientists conspiring to destroy our planet by adding insignificant amounts of natural oils to shallow pools of water!

  • Haha QFT. Pwnt.

  • neat.

  • this is a fake vid, theyre using a powerful fan to blow the water then they slowly power it down n tilt it to get the effect u see. the oil has nothing to do with it

  • If that was true, it'd go from the far end, to the close end....

and the waves go in the correct direction, so it's not reversed. and if you think it's fake, go try it out.

  • you idiot. how would a fan make the farthest part ripple and the closest not? it would be the opposite, the farthest would be calm and the closest would ripple. go play in traffic. society doesnt need you.

  • LOL wow there are some fuckin dipshits roaming around here... listen n learn george bush's bastard child.... you would first start the fan level with the water, so the air went over the entire surface, then slowly lift the fan(via forklift, etc), simultaneously tilting it slightly down(think hypotenuse of a triangle) to blow air over the farther regions, continuously doing that till only the far end was receiving air, then stop=the effect u see. dont expect u to get it, geometry is involved lol

  • Yes, a fan carried over a small pool of water by a forklift that's constantly moving up and down. I KNEW just going out on a windy day was too simple.

  • Ha, that's funny sh**, man.

  • ha ha u fuking dumbass they are on the beach, where would they plug the fan in?

  • ever heard of extension chords or battery power you fuckin dipshit?? LOL btw that was a rhetorical question if you didn't realize so dont bother answerin LOL......

  • maybe its just me but i don't know any people who would rent a giant fukin fan and then drag it out to a beach for some stupid vid, but hey maybe you and your loser friends do. also dumbass if there was a fan you would hear it in the back ground and the water closer to the fan would be moving faster then the water away from the fan, the water is moving at the same rate also if there was a fan that leaf would be flying across the beach, dont bother answerin cause ur a fukin retard. cunt

  • cool. now every one is gonna go pollute the earth some more.

  • think of the baby seals

  • one teaspoon? more like one drum.....

  • This is Photoshopped guys...1

  • Thanks.

Next time I need to stop water from rippling, I'll pour oil on it.

    How useless is that?

  • Respectable.

  • Amazing! Thanks for sharing.

  • lol, exactly

  • And her ass is sore! :o

  • why is this shit on the main page...
