Sometimes less is more. Its good that they experimented with the Ondes, but perhaps with a song such as this, it could have been left out. Nevertheless, the lyrics are haunting, as is the Ondes sound. But each to his own.
This song's awesome but those keyboards are annoying as piss. Anyone who says otherwise is a lying poser who just thinks it's cool b/c it's Radiohead.
Seriously, listen to that friggin' annoying hum play through the whole song and tell me you're not aggravated listening to it. If you're not, I don't believe you.
Simply because you can find nothing to like about the keyboard part in the song does not mean those who like it are simply licking Radiohead's musical nuts. That is a logical fallacy called a false dilemma. The parts are played on Ondes Martonet, an early electronic instrument, and the part is on the album version as well, albeit quieter. Johnny Greenwood said he composed those and the orchestral parts to sound like Penderecki, whose classical compositions I happen to enjoy.
Fair enough. I can respect that philosophy. I only felt the need to argue my point because of your notion that anyone who enjoys the string parts is "lying poser who just thinks it's cool b/c it's Radiohead."
The continuous keyboard "whining" is believed to representative of Tinnitus which Thom Yorke suffers from. It's a condition (often a symptom of something else) where one has a perceived ringing or buzzing (or other annoying, irritating and sometimes painful sound) in their ears when there is no actual outside noise. I suffered with it as a child. Having everything around you drowned out by a constant noise that only you can hear kind of makes you feel trapped and alone
This is a great song, which is almost typical of Radiohead these days. Thank God!
By the way, those keyboards they're playing in the back are called Ostes Martenots. They're like theremins crossed over with keyboards. They're cool instruments.

@reefergoat To each his own. I respectfully, though vehemently, disagree with your opinion on this song.
