a/c was available on type 1 VW's in the 60's, dealer add on. This model looks like a 69-70. I can't really tell if it has the crescent shape air vent behind the back window, it doesn't seem to.
@gatoperezoso I had a 1968 Beetle. I loved it but hated having no A/C ... In the early 1980's I can't remember anyone who ever carried an after market unit. Not even HOT VW'S or VW Trends magazine had a clue.
FAIL on VW ... that's one thing I never liked about the Super Beetles - the optional air conditioning. Beetles already had air conditioning - they're called windows. Plus, when you had the dealer installed A/C option, you had this UGLY grill that replaced the front clip on the body.
i didnt know they had air cond on some models...although the 1600 motor i just put in my beetle has a toothed pulley on the end of the crank pulley and a 3 bolt mount under the generator stand that SOMETHING used to bolt to...
@pedekiller --- Our 1974 Super Beetle still had all of the original A/C in place when we bought it although it wasn't working. We have decided not to fix it because all of the VW people we've talked with have agreed that it was the biggest flop that VW ever made. It's too much for the motor from what we were told by several people. We just roll the windows down like everyone else that enjoys driving VW's!!
@sonshack For as many times as I've heard that, I've read a fair amount of testimonials that a/c was no problem, and people loved having it in their Beetles. One guy had his car several years and drove it back and forth from NJ to FL. No issues with it frying the engine. Also read about people in AZ or GA, etc., where it's pretty damn hot. I think people get hysterical about VW's being so weak or outdated. It's not always true.
ac was a very uncommon optional extra, that was more popular on Karmen ghias, and they were also pretty crappy, but hey back then they were the best (and only) around
i don't care if the a/c took power off the engine. there's no way in hell i'd drive in south florida in the summer w/out a/c
