Sucks how much SAT's count! But what can you do? Improve them! If you're in the New York Area, check out AmLotus by Herald Square. It's a Dept. of Education certified school for SAT and it's just opening. If you sign up, you'll be eligible to receive a free iTouch, Dr. Dre headphones, and even an iPad 2! Email juliet.amlotus@gmail.com for more information.
Although prep books and programs are great they are too expensive. What helped me most on the PSAT/SAT/ACT was repetition. I came across this app called SAT Daily on the android. It is immensely helpful. It's new, but I downloaded it and was amazed. It gives you new question, new vocabulary word DAILY& new tip weekly. This kind of constant exposure really helps. I'm sure it will boost your score on SAT/ACT as well. & I scored in the top 2 percent. Search SAT Daily in the android market.
Well, the scrambled paragraphs are there to see how well you can organize a paragraph, the logical reasoning problems are basically puzzlez, but when the math comes in...well...just study.
-_- careless mistake, careless mistake, careless mistake blah blah blah... your wasting your time checking careless mistakes when in fact you could've studied. This will not get you far at all. This is ridiculous.
Thanks for your comment! Obviously, studying helps as well--but my students REGULARLY improve hundreds of points, and usually a good percentage of that comes from old-fashioned "eliminating the careless mistakes." You would be hard pressed to find an SAT student who doesn't make careless mistakes--and those are all free points for the taking!
An except from David Mura's "Turning Japanese" will be on the SAT reading section this year. The Barrons SAT prep book has a passage excerpted from it.
People rush on the SAT: why? There are easy questions, medium questions, hard questions. Rush through the easy ones, making lots of mistakes--to get to the hard ones, where you get a lot wrong? Bad idea. How about: take your time, within limits, on the easy ones, to make SURE you get them all right, and then build your medium-and-hard questions score up on TOP of that solid foundation. In short, check everything, but limit each question (60 seconds usually works, but this can vary)
SATs already under alot of criticism, so youre absolutely correct that it isnt a definite in which a person who scored higher on the test is necessarily "smarter." there are alot of factors
if you have a good vocabulary and comprehension of the english language and can calculate mathematical functions well, no need to worry. since its your first time, dont expect a really high score. you need to understand how the test is taken first. the 4 hours will kill you above even writing down your answers with a clear head. some questions, more often than not, is all about common sense. Time is also a factor.

The SAT's aren't designed to trick you... All it does is measure what you already know and see how you can apply that knowledge.
