I see this as a metaphor for money in politics. Candidates fundraise to get elected, intending to do good, but once they're elected they find themselves beholden to their owners rather than to their electorate. Their principle then become compromised and sometimes do very bad things because of the money. Money is like The One Ring; it becomes an addiction and blinds you to your principles.
