I visited Carentan a few months ago and the Easy Company who liberated Carentan and fought against the fallschirmjagers from Friedrich von der Heytde.

On his last para jump he took a bullet through the chest and lay bleeding in the snow all night before his men found him the next day. He lost the use of his left arm for the rest of his life, but he said the snow slowed the bleeding enough to save his life. It was -20 outside. God willing he at least lived.

My grandfather was in the 339th engineers construction battalion, and was stationed mainly in Guam and phillipines area for about 2 years straight. he survived with no wounds. I think the reason that the snow helped to slow the bleeding is because our bodies needs to keep our cores warm and so they restrict the flow of blood to our arms and legs. your great uncle probably survived because his body kept the blood in his core.

The U.S. war in the pacific pailed in comparison with what the germans were contending with in the east-no comparison.If these(german) forces in the east had been freed up to repel the channel invasion,allies would have suffered a defeat of historic proportions.As it was,they were faced with mostly Hitler youth and poorly trained conscripts from Baltic countries

Interesting to see what difference another week of heavy cloud cover and good fuel supply would have made.Anyway,my original point was the channel invasion-a different situation.Allies would have faced seasoned troops who would not have caved in like the Latvians etc. did. Allies barely pulled it off as it was.
@jagerschweigen U.S. fighting in the Pacific was a logistical nightmare. All Germany had to do was send supply by rail, trucks, and even planes, over Poland. The U.S. only had one way to resupply their troops, by sea, and with a hurting Navy at that. So to say that the German's eastern war was far worse than the U.S.'s Pacific war, is simply wrong.
@RaininBullets187 Good points,however I still believe the Russian front was a nightmare compared to the mostly air/naval/island hopping campaign of the Pacific.The German soldier had to deal with -30 degree winters and springtime mud roads on a frontline extending from Leningrad to Stalingrad and beyond.Supplies were not as easy as you suggest as we are talking about a supply line almost 2,000 miles long thru partisan territory.Resupply not a problem in the Pacific after Midway
@jagerschweigen Ah, but the Marines had to deal with the tropical jungle environment, in which exposure is just as bad as frostbite. When it comes to frontlines, the U.S. had a frontline that spanned the entire Pacific ocean, and it wasn't until the luck of Midway that things changed. While supply lines went through Poland, the partisan movement wasn't bad in that territory, and that is also where planes come in. I still personally believe that the Pacific was a tougher fight.

The Germans had to deal with all weather conditions, from the scorched sands of africa to the depths of Russian winter, were it fell to -60 degrees C at times. US had it easy compared with Germans. I grant you that yes the US won its war, but it had considerably powerful allies and its industry was left untouched.
@jagerschweigen Disagree with you {respectfully) a bit here. The vast distances of the Pacific Ocean actually dwarf the Russian Front in size and scale. You are talking about navigating ships and airplanes over literally thousands of miles of open sea with no land in sight, trying to hit tiny coral atolls and mostly uninhabited jungle islands. Also, fighting in that environment was a nightmare (think Vietnam) Many men died of tropical diseases.

@jagerschweigen You have a point there - Most of the naval and airmen did have bunks to come back to at night - I was actually thinking of the men who fought in places like Guadalcanal Island and places like that where you were basically camping out in the jungle with the Japanese hiding in the forests. But yes, if I had to choose I'd rather be there than be a German soldier on the Russian front. There was a lot of guerilla partisan activity behind the lines so Germans had to watch their back

German had to fight along a 2000 mile front, they also had to supply there frontline and rear forces with new men, machines and material, and they had to do this while under constant air attack, moreover, remember that Germanys industry was being heavily bombed increasingly as the war went on. They were gambling that they could take Antwerp and split the western Allied forces, defeating them quickly and decisively, then send troops back to the Eastern front. The Germans had one of the greatest armies ever assembled and they conquered most of Europe, but it's hard to win when you have most of the rest of the world against you. Just like Napoleon in the preceding century. Napoleon's Grand Army was one of history's great armies, in fact in organization and logistics it could be called truly the world's first modern army - but it couldn't withstand the coalitions of countries allied against it in the end
Also keep in mind that American soldiers outfought the Germans. The Soviet soldier won by weight of arms. In situations where they were outnumbered and outgunned (it did happen) American soldiers not only held their own, but were able to defeat the Socialist German forces.
@jimbob2077 its a captured Belgium/canadian browning hi-power 9mm. it is also possible that it was a "nazi" manufactured browning hi-power. the factory making these things in belguim was still running when the germans took over, but they had to chamber it to the germans version of the 9mm and have the swastika stamped at the foregrip.
Keep in mind the Americans and Brits fought only 20% of the German army on the western front. The Germans had another front in the east that took up 80% of it's military forces. The Germans biggest mistake was invading north Africa to bail out Mussolini, wasting resources and man-power.

The changes that were being implemented during the spring of '41 were in response to the results of war games that had been carried out (by Zhukov among others), based on the premise of a German attack. The Soviets may well have been able to attack Germany at a later date, but in 41 they were not planning to do so. The Soviet Army was in no state to carry out such an attack anyway.

@theskeptic2010 I think Eisenhower told his commanders not to envisage an attack against the Germans unless there was a 3;1 ratio superiority in ground troops, plus air superiority (which of course was the case for the best part of 42 or 43-45. And remember the Germans were fighting on at least three fronts (East, Italy and West).

@frenchycanada Wasn't my intention to slight the brave Canadians of for that matter any other force fighting. Actually their ill fated invasion of Dieppe helped out in that it showed the Allies what they were up against and was a learning experience that helped in Normandy. Also in the Pacific the Australians and New Zealanders did a lot of hard fighting and really weren't given much credit for it
@DeresteauR No. The Japanese were the last to surrender and they didn't surrender until August. 1945. Many areas of China and Southeast Asia were actually still under direct Japanese military control at the time of the surrender in Aug. of '45. The Americans conducted an "island hopping campaign" actually bypassing many Japanese strongholds so they could build air bases close enough to the Japanese mainland to bomb them. 2 atomic bombs and threat of invasion convinced them to surrender

With the Luftwaffe defeat in battle of Britain Hitler had to abandon planned invasion of England as he didn't have the air superiority required to do so successfully. Instead he decided to use terror as a weapon and commenced bombing civilians in English cities, paying particular attention to London, Portsmouth & Brighton. It was in retaliation that the British did the same back to German cities.

However, Germany had to come and protect its allies when they called, as did other world powers. So that's how WWI got started.

This is actually training footage from germany NOT combat footage. They shot this using ONE captured tank. These training videos are available on DVD. Propaganda only. On his last para jump he took a bullet through the chest and lay bleeding in the snow all night before his men found him the next day. He lost the use of his left arm for the rest of his life, but he said the snow slowed the bleeding enough to save his life. It was -20 outside. God willing he at least lived.

My grandfather was in the 339th engineers construction battalion, and was stationed mainly in Guam and phillipines area for about 2 years straight. he survived with no wounds. I think the reason that the snow helped to slow the bleeding is because our bodies needs to keep our cores warm and so they restrict the flow of blood to our arms and legs. your great uncle probably survived because his body kept the blood in his core.

The U.S. war in the pacific pailed in comparison with what the germans were contending with in the east-no comparison.If these(german) forces in the east had been freed up to repel the channel invasion,allies would have suffered a defeat of historic proportions.As it was,they were faced with mostly Hitler youth and poorly trained conscripts from Baltic countries

Interesting to see what difference another week of heavy cloud cover and good fuel supply would have made.Anyway,my original point was the channel invasion-a different situation.Allies would have faced seasoned troops who would not have caved in like the Latvians etc. did. Allies barely pulled it off as it was.

@jagerschweigen U.S. fighting in the Pacific was a logistical nightmare. All Germany had to do was send supply by rail, trucks, and even planes, over Poland. The U.S. only had one way to resupply their troops, by sea, and with a hurting Navy at that. So to say that the German's eastern war was far worse than the U.S.'s Pacific war, is simply wrong.

@RaininBullets187 Good points,however I still believe the Russian front was a nightmare compared to the mostly air/naval/island hopping campaign of the Pacific.The German soldier had to deal with -30 degree winters and springtime mud roads on a frontline extending from Leningrad to Stalingrad and beyond.Supplies were not as easy as you suggest as we are talking about a supply line almost 2,000 miles long thru partisan territory.Resupply not a problem in the Pacific after Midway

@jagerschweigen Ah, but the Marines had to deal with the tropical jungle environment, in which exposure is just as bad as frostbite. When it comes to frontlines, the U.S. had a frontline that spanned the entire Pacific ocean, and it wasn't until the luck of Midway that things changed. While supply lines went through Poland, the partisan movement wasn't bad in that territory, and that is also where planes come in. I still personally believe that the Pacific was a tougher fight.

The Germans had to deal with all weather conditions, from the scorched sands of africa to the depths of Russian winter, were it fell to -60 degrees C at times. US had it easy compared with Germans. I grant you that yes the US won its war, but it had considerably powerful allies and its industry was left untouched.

You are talking about navigating ships and airplanes over literally thousands of miles of open sea with no land in sight, trying to hit tiny coral atolls and mostly uninhabited jungle islands. Also, fighting in that environment was a nightmare (think Vietnam) Many men died of tropical diseases.

@jagerschweigen You have a point there - Most of the naval and airmen did have bunks to come back to at night - I was actually thinking of the men who fought in places like Guadalcanal Island and places like that where you were basically camping out in the jungle with the Japanese hiding in the forests. But yes, if I had to choose I'd rather be there than be a German soldier on the Russian front. There was a lot of guerilla partisan activity behind the lines so Germans had to watch their back

They were gambling that they could take Antwerp and split the western Allied forces, defeating them quickly and decisively, then send troops back to the Eastern front. But everything in their plan and timetable had to work perfectly and on schedule, and as so often happens in war, unforseen things happened to throw this out of whack

The Germans had one of the greatest armies ever assembled and they conquered most of Europe, but it's hard to win when you have most of the rest of the world against you. Just like Napoleon in the preceding century. Napoleon's Grand Army was one of history's great armies, in fact in organization and logistics it could be called truly the world's first modern army - but it couldn't withstand the coalitions of countries allied against it in the end

Also keep in mind that American soldiers outfought the Germans. The Soviet soldier won by weight of arms. In situations where they were outnumbered and outgunned (it did happen) American soldiers not only held their own, but were able to defeat the Socialist German forces.

The changes that were being implemented during the spring of '41 were in response to the results of war games that had been carried out (by Zhukov among others), based on the premise of a German attack. The Soviets may well have been able to attack Germany at a later date, but in 41 they were not planning to do so. The Soviet Army was in no state to carry out such an attack anyway.

And remember the Germans were fighting on at least three fronts (East, Italy and West).

Actually their ill fated invasion of Dieppe helped out in that it showed the Allies what they were up against and was a learning experience that helped in Normandy. Also in the Pacific the Australians and New Zealanders did a lot of hard fighting and really weren't given much credit for it

Many areas of China and Southeast Asia were actually still under direct Japanese military control at the time of the surrender in Aug. of '45. The Americans conducted an "island hopping campaign" actually bypassing many Japanese strongholds so they could build air bases close enough to the Japanese mainland to bomb them. 2 atomic bombs and threat of invasion convinced them to surrender

However, Germany had to come and protect its allies when they called, as did other world powers. So that's how WWI got started.

This is actually training footage from germany NOT combat footage. They shot this using ONE captured tank. These training videos are available on DVD. Propaganda only. The two dead tanks at the end are a PzKfw III and A PzKfw IV. Notice how civil they were to the prisoners? They were all German keeping the hope of the German people alive with staged footage.
