theres gated reverb on the snare to make it sound huge. ya it sounds weird alone, but in the context of the whole track it works really well.  basically its the metallica/ulrich signature sound

I've really liked the black album drums since I was a little kid in the early 90's, preferably the snare drum sound. The black album by FAR had the most polished drums. I prefer the dry, tight snare sound anyday.

Well, i must agree that Lars isn't the best drummer in the world. Someone said that he shines because of his arragments and thats is true. His drumming was ok on MoP, AJFA was a level higher, but i think he played and made the best drum sound on the Black Album. The dynamics fit perfectly into every song.

That's just editing, actually. They mic each one of the drums individually, and you can then go about turning up and down different drums / cymbals as you please.
