This is most likely explained by amps having a limited range in where they can amplify without distorting the input signal. Let's say you have an amp with linear amplification that works on +-5V. You provide an audio signal (sine) of +-0.1V. Now let's say it amplifies by a factor 100 to +-10V. Your signal will be capped at +-5V as that is your amps limit. So your signal has lost a bit at the top and bottom, thus creating a distorted sound. That happens when you amplify to much :)
