Well, I'm not gonna pretend I haven't done it, because I have; when I was younger, like in high school. The main reason people do it is because of low risk, low responsibility attached to it. You don't have to show up in person, you don't have to look presentable, when you're chatting you are more confident than when you're speaking to some one in person.
