Gotta love Dolly! Joan Baez did the definitive version of this song in my humble opinion, but Dolly does it justice. She has proven time and again that she's not just a pretty face & etc..
Dolly's singing is miraculous in this, no doubt, but let's give some love to her all-star band: Sam Bush: Mandolin, Stuart Duncan: Fiddle, Bryan Sutton: Guitar, Jim Mills: Banjo, Barry Bales: Bass. (Any idea who the harmony singer is?) Only a star of Dolly's magnitude could have assembled such a group.
if u actually listen to this song, the pass of the bango WAS and always has been that fast, dolly never smoked, and who gives a shit what she sounds like, She is herself and no one can do it better
Dolly has a fantastic voice like always, though the banjo pacing seems a bit fast for this type of song. That's just my opinion though, it's still a lovely cover of the classic ballad.
@FuelXC Sorry, but Dolly never smoked and her voice is one of the best in the business. Please, go listen to your Baez CDs and let us be happy at Dollywood.
@12zummo aaaaugh it's not a bob dylan song! traditional songs exist long before the people who first brought them to pop culture...do a little homework!
love this version of a haunting song. Dolly in fine voice, great backing from the band and hey, hows about a round of applause for the great backing singer !! Who she ?
The cd The Grass Is Blue by Dolly knocked my socks off! and this one is still one of my favourites. Dolly does bluegrass so well-helped out by fantastic musicians of course!

oh my god, how many operations did she have? Also her voice....how much tobacco has crushed lungs? I prefer the version of Joan Baez

Why did she change the words?

Amen. It's not a Dylan song, but from the early 19th Century. Now listen to Joan Baez's haunting version, not that this ain't nice.

If there's a better Bluegrass banjo player than Jim Mills here, I have yet to hear them. And I have heard a lot.

What a group of virtuosos: The musicians, the great backing vocal and the incomparable Dolly Parton.

I love her version of this song. She sings like she's some young girl feeling these things for the first time.
