  • when you started drawing, did you ever think that you were horrible at drawing...cause i think i am, yet i would love to learn how to do this type of stuff, could you give me the basic ideas on how to really get started and learn the techniches to get better? ...i watch you and you put it very clearly which i like, but i don't know really what you start with in drawing stuff like this

  • is he asian? if not , congratz for your aquired skillz!

  • Hey, I have a question you may think is... stupid, just because it's so easy.

What do you use to color your pictures? I mean, firstly you paint it all in grey tones and then you just... apply color. What do you use to do that? What tool of effect? Overlay maybe?

    PS Sorry for my English. I'm from Poland (;

  • @LadyMadameHorse I do it many different way, this is just one of the easy way. My blog has all the info.

  • Good work, nice to see some one who understands painting.

  • Dude, when she tried to kill that stone guy, she didn't had her sword, the reason why is because she already threw it to him so at that time, the sword was outside. But the painting/Drawing is still cool. :D

  • @MrStalker501 I have no idea what you talking about. I just paint. ;-)

  • As one digital artist to another, what is your preference? Corel or Photoshop?

  • @gothboy195 I've been using PS for over 10 years so it's faster for me with shortcuts and key strokes. I would not mind painter. Both could pretty much achieve the same result no doubt.

  • @idrawgirls Great. I've never had much of a chance to use to Painter. I got photoshop for free, but I've always wondered about the other.

  • what painting program are you using? and which do you recommend tho most? tnx in advance I've seen your videos and they inspire me i have SUBSCRIBE!! LOL

  • @skull187a If you want to be serious I would recommend Photoshop (student edition is cheaper with same exact feature) or Painter X. Wacom is necessary.

  • as far as technique is concerned, whats the difference between a speed painting and a final illustration?? does a final illustration involve a lot of smudging and softening or is it something else?

  • @garrette2010 Speedpainting is done within one sitting or session with in less than 2 hours. It is basically a comp, not a finish illo. It is rough and unfinished, not refine.

  • looks good from far

  • Awesome video! When are you going to make a return to sketch club on iPad?

  • @SpankTheYanksAgain LOL, soon brother... soon

  • Oh god, It's so beautiful! Can do that without using the computer?

  • @wassupdam Yes, I can.

  • I love your art its very inspiring and you have very nice advice..I've been trying to get into this kind of light painting..I've seen a lot of people draw out basically everything then go back over it with different shades and hues to add a realistic look and feel..but your work seems to lean towards using light and shadow to create the shape..which i really like..I can see the these 2 types of paintings are very similar but different at the same time..Does anyone else notice it too?

  • @MrZgraphics Without light, you cannot see therefore I paint according to the light. For instance when paint a nose, you do not render a nose. You paint according to the shape of the light and that touch part of it. Light painting = the truth, you don't need to add more to what is already true.

  • @MrZgraphics Also once you've done a lot from life and ref. You will be able to come up with your own painting using imaginary logical lighting.

  • sucker punch was awesome movie!

  • Pay close attention to what he says around 4:20. This is extremely important when trying to render something realistically. Draw what you see, not what you think you see. You can really see this concept coming into play when drawing a figure that is foreshortened. Our mind tries to tell us "yeah, yeah, I know what a leg looks like, thanks" but don't let it draw, let your eyes draw!

  • do you download brushes because i don't see some of the brushes you use in my photoshop

  • @Raphael041 I made them.

  • @Raphael041 i see, i really watch your tutorials very often, i'm trying to apply some of your techniques, thanks

  • @Raphael041 No problem. ;-)

  • Just Awesome!!! Thank you

  • This is a good tutotrial and all, but there are a couple of things that almost anyone would find useful, for example, how are you doing the color overlay? Step by step for that would be awesome. The reason people keep asking you about your brushes is because it IS hard to flip through the millions of photoshop brushes and figure out which ones to use and how to use them. It would be great if you did a tutorial on the proper use of brushes alone.

  • @ColinQuigley Keep watching and keep practicing. Then one day you will understand. Check your pm.

  • What program do u use?

  • This is great. I learn a lot from you! I think I'll go back and start from your first videos and work up. Are you on DeviantART too?

  • very good explanations. it opens my mind even more. awesome work!

  • Good paiter, perfect teacher but i cant understand you at all :(

  • @murasaki180 Go to my channel or my website and start with a few easier ones.

  • @murasaki180 and you're horrible at typing.

  • My favourite so far. This is just damned incredible.

  • the first three minutes of watching this i was like okay...i kinda see it, then BAM all of a sudden you had done the painting wile i was looking away or something!!!! its class

  • OMG this is fuckin' beautiful! seriously its awesome! respect for you

  • i always used to stick to one or 2 brushes and hardnesses and try do the hole thing like that cause i was alittle bit lazy. but i notice you tend to change brushes very very often and sizes and softness too wich tends too keep that nice loose element to your work and still give you control wich seems to be working alittle for me, but i just need alot more patience. and i would be happy if i could do aswell as when your paintings are only half finfished.

  • Good stuff. If only my teachers had taught so well :D Maybe if they'd actually known how to paint haha

  • Holy shit dude

  • Thanks so much! i was actually doing my own speedpainting of the samurais yesterday, and this video is really useful in showing me the right way (or maybe not right exactly, but better way) of doing things. I never painted with b/w, then added colour on top before, but now i'm gonna give it a go! I'd love if you could give me some tips on my recent work!

Thanks again, i have so much to learn!

  • @SPU7N1K on its way. ;-)

  • this is so cool!

  • beautiful!

  • soooooooo kooooooolll!! reli awesome skill u hv~ subscribed :)

  • It looks great man, very well done!

  • Wonderful tutorial and great advice!!!

  • God...Am I the only one who thinks of Suck Punch the game studio, every time this movie is mentioned?

  • You know if ads were traditionally drawn or done digitally and artistically like this, i would pay way more attention to them because work like yours is just amazing!

  • how many layers did this end up totaling out to?

  • umm i cant download brushes so how else can i get texture brushes can u post some on ur site so i can like make them a custom brush just a suggestion

  • Where have u studied digital painting? or what did u study to end up with digital painting? :P

  • I think I heard you mention at one point that you didn't see a sword in the actual picture, but that you just added it:

I haven't seen it in a bit, but I'm pretty sure at that part of the trailer she is actually punching the guy.

  • What does that shit mean though dont see things as perspective see as is.

  • Isn't the time limit 15 minutes now?

  • the only one thing i would criticise is that the leftern part of the picture, the blue foggy region to me is a little too bright and too massive - it carries the view out of the picture the whole time; i think you should darken it up a tiny bit to make the actual gunfire pop out as the highest value =)

    great job tho :D

  • Oh man, oh man do you make it look easy.

  • Impressive dude!

I'm seeing a big nose face on the right wall

:) thumbs up If you see it

  • I've found you to be a great inspiration as an artist, and I really appreciate what you show everyone here. Question though, do you have a video where you show what your references are/look like? I'm always curious what your "references" look like, what they are, and where you get them from.

  • Awesome work! I've purchased several of your tutorial videos, thank you! Is it possible to do these things in a program like Paint Tool Sai?

  • This is just so amazing. Being subscribed to you is truly beneficial.

  • Youre always very helpful.Lots of good tips..Thanks. Can you paint Roronoa Zoro from One Piece with your own twist ?

  • just beautiful. Cannot wait to accumulate the knowledge and skill to do this :D

  • Wow :D Can you draw that one samurai who's head is completely covered by a straw hat?

  • Hey idrawgirls whicht hardware do you use? I think its PS CS4 right? Do you use an digital tablet?

  • Lol, great painting, awful drawing.

  • 1,5 hours.... O.o.....

  • Wow faved!

  • I've been subbed since the very start [no lie] and I cannot draw for shit! I just enjoy the videos, the outcomes.

  • Quality. . .One day im gonna be just like you! lol

  • You should make a how to get a job video.

  • @International72521 lol its gonna be like: "Learn to draw like this... Learn to draw like this... Learn to draw like this..." for 10 minutes:D

  • just amazing !!!

  • i find it really heplful to zoom in when i'm doing shadows. seeing the whole picture just distracts me. so i do all the shadows while zoomed in and when i zoom out i get a pleasant surprise xD. i just think it's easier to determine wether the light hits the spot or not if you are close up to it :)

  • holy shit that was fast! awesome stuff man. do you have a deviantart?

  • Well I for one am quite glad you're going along with some more advanced techniques. Your older videos were great to watch but I never really learned anything new from them. I've been wanting to do cinematic screen studies for a while, always get distracted by something though.

  • i love your work so damn much xD

  • THIS IS SOOO COOOOOL!

  • Very true that movies and game trailers/cinematics have great composition, lighting, and pretty much everything else. I'm currently doing screencap painting; you find a screenshot you like, and try paint it in less than an hour. There's whole sites dedicated to giving stock screenhots, just Google "movie screenshots". Nice video man, loving the Dead Space one too.

  • if i hunt you down, kill you and eat your brain... will i be as good as you..

    ... just wondering :) <3

  • @Lusts4m4 there are better brains to be eaten.. much better brains

  • @Lusts4m4 tta remains to be proven... but i can eat multiple brains.... no prob there xD

  • @idrawgirls I don't even think about the like button or I would have been doing that on all your videos, sorry :\.

  • I wanna be you when I grow up.

    This kicks so much ass!

  • oh my godnesss !!! seriously your my idol

  • This video is great, I learned alot. And always when I dont draw what I see I will watch this video again.

  • Thanks for the tips :)

I'd appreciate it if you could share a few of your brushes, they look very handy lol

    Thanks again!

  • Awesome stuff!!!

    great tutorial

  • Geeze. Awesome work as always Xia. I gotta start drawing more.

  • i keep forgetting abut this damn LIKE button :)

  • @idrawgirls Please carry on doing more videos! They have inspired me to be a MUCH better artist; if it wasn't for you the only paintings I would be doing, would be finger paintings.

  • how many layers do u usually use, or u just work on 1 layer?

  • @sk8erboysmrsuji go to his channel and look for some easier videos, they should answer your question. This video is more for people who have been watching him a while :) Hope I helped :)

  • @LegendRSA thanks ill check it out

  • inspiring

  • @DucksFromHell Then go look in my channel, find the easier video. Seriously...this one is for ppl who's been subs for a while.

  • @idrawgirls i've been watching your videos for 3 years i think. I was just messing with you. >.<

  • @DucksFromHell

  • Very nice idrawgirls! I like all of your work.

Btw this question I had: there is a website and guy called ipaintgirls

Is it affiliated with you in any way?

  • "Trust what you see with your eyes, sometime your brain will tell you other wise"

"Try not to betray the truth, don't see things in your perspective, see thing as is." -beautiful words.

  • @JRivken It's true, I didn't come up with it. Once a wise painter tole me :-)
