You can cut your work nearly in half, split one shake from each edge grain side of the block, THEN flip it over, split form each side.
You will have to turn the block over half as many times, especially beneficial if you have some nice blocks, like big ones weighing 200 pounds or more, you don't want to flip them unnecessarily.
