This is probably my favorite song from this album. I wish Kurt was still alive instead of the Foo Fighters though... He would flip shit if he knew Grohl was a pioneer of radio-friendly post-grunge.
@cc4rtwright I'm not so sure about that. It always seemed to me Kurt was making music to make music and cared less about whatever image he was creating; grunge or otherwise. As a friend I'm sure he'd be happy to see their success...permitting neither Dave or Kris got into polka or some shit.
this is a weird comparison, but this song sounds alot like elliott smith if you took away all the distortion (and replaced the lyrics. smith didnt really write like this)
i got this from wiki "In order to occupy himself during tours, he took a guitar with him and wrote songs. Grohl held back these songs from the band; he said in 1997, "I was in awe of frontman Kurt Cobain's songs. And intimidated. I thought it was best that I keep my songs to myself.""
This is a whole lot older than that.. The first thing I thougt when I saw the title was the line "Oh George, not the lifestock." From Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
Dave has said that this song is a tribute to George Harrison, not Kurt.
"I paid tribute to him on our first record with the song 'Oh, George', a reference to the slide lead. He was always my favorite....and always will be."
Been a long time browser of youtube but never got round to making an account so I could comment but for this I have to so here goes.
Broclfist from everything I have read or seen mate the recording for the debut Foo Fighters album was done in less than 2 months, Dave wrote not only the lyrics but the music himself and I'm pretty sure if you have a good look on the net or some bios for Dave you will find that Oh George is a tribute to Kurt and that George was Dave's nickname for Kurt
Lots of comments in this thread about Kurt influencing this album. All of these songs were written (not necessarily recorded) before Dave ever met Kurt. I'd say that the actual influence is minimal, but there will always be people who attempt to write off talent like Dave's by saying "Oh, he ripped off Cobain." Invalid criticism in the 90's, still invalid today.
I did hear that Dave wrote a lot of songs whilst living with Kurt in Washington. He may or may not have been influenced by Kurt, but chances are they jammed a hell of a lot together.
Yeah I was puzzled to why it received the sixunder, but realized that it was probably just a knee-jerk reaction to an emotional issue of the time and bereft of clarification to its ambiguity.
@rokwort likely, since in utero was the album Nirvana was touring behind when Kurt took his own life, the Foo Fighters eponymous debut came out the next year....and Dave rocks a pretty groovy slide guitar solo too....I remember thinking "He can play guitar too?" turns out every sound on this album is Dave Grohl...he got the band together afterwards
@rokwort duh. you play with a guy like Kurt, he rubs off on you. In Your Honor was the last thing that sounded like Nirvana... the whole album seems like it it's either about Kurt himself, or moving on from trying to be everything that Nirvana was.
@rokwort thats because this album is only dave playing all instruments (except for one song forget which one) but it was basically things that he never showed to nirvana bc he didnt think it was good enough or just didnt think it would be something nirvana would play. love this album soooooo good
dave wrote this about george because he was his favourite beatle. The intro to the song is based on "something" by george, his most successful and covered song!
who is george harrison? ever noticed its alot like exhausted at the start. the bedut album is awesome i wish theyd play more of that stuff apart from just all the cows.
I love this song, its based on the Beatles "Something" which is the first riff Grohl ever learned to play. He wrote the song as a tribute to George his "favorite Beatle".
