  • I remember '92.

The future looked a lot better back then. :)

  • That really is lovely. Thank you so much for posting!

I flew London/Newcastle with DA & BA regularly during the early 1980s.

BA were using new 737-200s along with older Tridents into Heathrow.

DA 'mainly' flew BAC 1-11s into Gatwick.. It was not uncommon to find an HS748 allocated on the route, but nobody minded. The 90min. or so turboprop flight was always pleasant and Dan Air cabin staff were great. Cruising altitude in the 748 was a mere 14,000 ft.

  • I just LOVE classic planes, I used to live very close to Amsterdam airport Schiphol, and remember the !-11, 707, DC-8 ,tridents and Vickers Viscounts taking off over my house........those were the days!

    Thanks for the GREAT video!

  • Sounds like a washing machine LOL

  • Simon Lowe, You're the best!!!!

  • @greengoblin200 The 111 did not have great short field takeoff performance at high gross weight. Additionally no leading edge slats for extra lift and lower takeoff speeds hence the long takeoff roll. In this video perhaps it was a high temperature and I bet also calm wind. These also go against your takeoff performance.

  • Used to fly them in the 60s on Braniff in the U.S.

  • why do planes always switch the engines down after about a minute for? it always scares me as i think they are turning off and the plane is still going up

  • @hargohargo2 Reason they reduce power on the engines shortly after take-off is to restrict the spped of the aircraft (usually to around 250knt under 8000ft) and also if they were kept at full power for much longer they would simply explode!

  • AHhh thats soo weird my mother was pregnant with me when this was taken!!!

  • Does anyone know why the flap drive on a BAC-1-11 makes the sound it does for both extension or retraction? Sounds like a squeaky door hinge.

  • how comes there is such a long take off roll?

  • dude, this is phenomenal

  • i have a painting of dan air 111, by M wood i don't know who he is!!! but i luv the painting....any ideas who is M Wood..????

  • Stunning interior view of a classic aircraft!!

  • I flew several time o/b DA a/c and these BAC 111. Nice a/c. Last time was in 1999 when I chartered one of the last from British World from Rotterdam to Prague.

  • Great to see a classic jet from the inside. Where was the flight going to?

  • @james737 MAN / EGCC

  • Fantastic video, thanks for posting. I fllew in Dan Air 1-11's and 727's during the 1980's as a passenger. Can you post more? Do you have the 727 or Comet on film?

  • I loved Dan Dare and their old school 1-11's.

  • this has been my first air company n 1985!

  • Last time on a 1-11 out of JER to BRSsat in seat 1A on climbout I could here the lady oposite un wrapping her boiled sweet given out by the Cabin staff... I then realised what a contrast it was, as below us the locals in JER must have been saying what a F****** row that plane is making.

  • I used to fly as crew on these Dan Air pocket rockets. Classic planes but bloody horrible little things to work on. Hear the P/A about smoking? Those were the days.

  • Ho Hum - Bac 1-11 days

My Father in law Captain Tony Lazenby flew lots of 1-11s

My wife Susie - was flight attendant on many 1-11s

  • blimey what a diamond video...i flew to ibiza around the same time on this jet, prob not the same one, all i can remember was it was loud but comfortable. classic little aircraft, legendary airline!!

  • I remember flying from on a Dan-Air BAC 1-11 from Luton to Almeria and back to Luton during July 1988 - the aircraft going out waS G-BDAT and comming back was G-BEKA,I think that G-BDAT is gone now but G-BEKA is still active in Romania.

  • Great aircraft the BAC 1-11 it was built like a brick s**t house. Worked on them with European Air Charter. Loved those spey engines when they started up & being able to see through the cracks around the door whilst climbing out until the seals pressurised. Halcyon days... it was real flying!!

  • I flew to Tunis On a Dan Air London Comet in 1974..!What a plane at the time although now it would be a Fookin Shed of the Skys...!lol lol f**king lol

  • I have to say it has a bad climb rate

  • It´s amazing! BAC is one of my favorite aeroplanes

  • Pocket Rocket

  • took a 777 300 back home to Dubai got some nice smooth footage! man that plane is smoooth!

  • Looking at the 1-11 its configuration I think must have influenced a lot of private jet design!

  • nice! we need more of this vintage stuff! good old Dan Dare!

  • Pocket Rocket -

Last week(17/07/2009) probably the last ever 1-11 visited Hurn (Bournemouth its birthplace) on route to Fairford ?? airshow RIP BAC 1-11.

Thankyou BAC 1-11 for all the joy and happiness which you have given us over the last 45 years .

  • Did you get some video matey! post it up!

  • Did you catch the vid of the 1-11 from hurn

  • My first flight was on a Dan Air 727. Fantastic it was.

  • Yeah they were great planes! Also the DC10 and Tristars I loved!

  • Seemed to be a slow rate of climb there.

I enjoyed this video, hopefully there'll be more to come :)

  • Great piese of film, it would have been nice to hear the start up of this BAC 1-11

  • I agree, I use to love hearing, the Bac 1-11 start up at Manchester airport in the 70s, when you could go on the terraces, at the airport.

  • This video is as rare as the plane itself. Thanks for sharing it, Sir.

  • What a great engine sound....

  • Always sounded like a washing machine on fast spin at take off, love these planes shame there no longer in british skys

  • how lovely is it to see Caledonian Tristar and 757 at the hangars on rotatio - why on earth didn't they keep that heritage going??

  • I just adore the sound of those RR SPeys on full take off power - excellent video mate!

  • @knaphilllee I love the noice from those spey's on start up take of as well as landing.

  • Excellent !

  • Brilliant video mate, nice job!

  • Amazingly noisy jet...Having lived next to a runway in Louisville in the 1970s, I used to hear these jets take off (Allegheny/US Air)...my ears are still ringing....

  • lol thats Funny My Ears Are Still ringing lol

  • The british used to make good planes.

  • Philippine Airlines (my home country's flag carrier) used to fly BAC 1-11 Series 500s on most of their major domestic services into and out ot Manila; in fact, I NEVER forget my very first airplane flight on one - from Manila to Bacolod - when I was 3 years old. Seeing this video after all these years suddenly made me feel like a kid that young again....

  • Thought it had a different variant of the Spey, but sounds exactly the same as an F28! Great video!

  • Brilliant vids. Landing and takeoff. I flew Dan Air to MIR 23/5/90 on a 1-11. My first flight. Would love to ID the plane. Thanks for the memories.... Keep em comin'
