There is no doubt this is a very powerful film - I am English but live in Russia and even I feel the utter sadness and pointlessness illustrated in this film - the opening scene is the saddest - poor (very) young men taken from their girlfriends and loved ones in the middle of some small town to fight a war even their own government had lost interest in. This film is far more effective at showing the waste of war then the likes platoon. I was in a strange mood for days after watching this film

This movie is not bad, good special effects, big budget for Russia, & so on. But it's not true history of this battle. Soviets win this day! Loose few soldiers and kill more then a 200 insurgentsts! They wasn't forgotten, artillery suport them heavilly.

And about Afgan war, soviet do 2 mistakes: 1st - that entered Afganistan, 2 nd - that leave (without victory).

In one of the parts of the movie when some instructor says "Nobody was able to conquer Afghanistan.. nobody and ever". One of my family members fought in Afghanistan and told me that it was pretty unimaginable to see the terrorists/rebels still being alive after huge series of bombs dropped at the areas where they were camping. My advice to the U.S. is to leave Afghanistan as soon as possible. Отличное видео.

This film is about soviet war in Afghanistan. The government of Afghanistan called in russia support to combat the Islamic radical groups there. The american and British armed supported and trained radical Islamic groups and person called bin laden. The russia later left and it fell to Islamic radical groups and turned into what it is today.

in the movies... veterans go home after long fighting all in medals etc... and right when the Il 76 lifts off the Mujahadeen hidden in the mountains attack it with handheld Stinger AA. Meant to show that Americans were selling new handheld surface-to-air weaponry to Bin Laden.
