  • Incredible baryton and tenor!! such perfection!! i think that is a tribute that Mozart can be proud of!!

  • I love Walter Berry's facial expressions.

  • excellent trombone !

  • Peter Schreier, the best tenor in Tuba Mirum!

  • Love it :). This is one of the very best I have ever heard!

  • Ahh I love Peter Schreier's voice... His entrance is just perfect! I'm sure Mr. Mozart heard it and loved it like us...

  • Beautiful composition and great execution by all - thank you.

    A.

  • yes; is A flat

  • this is the ultimate version!

  • omy god this is so good, incredibly good

  • Bellissimo.

  • @royaloak67 I believe this latin pronunciation is the german way to pronunce latin, therefore the very correct way to sing this piece. Peter Schreier sings also 'resurGHet'. In fact, the 'mistakes' are from the other singers (e.g. the alto singing 'quidquid' instead of 'kvidkvid')!

  • @royaloak67 I noticed that too, but he is using medieval latin, not church latin

  • Why you didn´t put the name of the trombone solo?

  • Walter Berry is just amazing here and his superb breath control and reserves shows us why he had such a wonderful rich and full tone and long career. Thank you.

  • The singing was amazing, but you would have no idea what they were singing about because there was no facial expression.

  • Sublime!!!

  • in the original score is written a-flat This must be a mistake

  • @bassbariton9 nope :) b flat!

  • @bassbariton9 sounds like f minor to my ear...

  • @Ferdotron I have listened again, and you must be mistaken, he is definitely singing an A natural, creating an F major arpeggio. Try playing an A-flat on an instrument while you are listening to this and you will see that he is singing a half-step higher.

  • @bassbariton9 I'm looking at the score right now, and it's in b-flat.

  • @bassbariton9

where is the mistake in that movie ?

  • @bassbariton9

he played a flat but he played it at first position

  • I love this piece, it is one of my favorites, but Im a little confused because @1:08 the tenor sings an A but in the copy of the score that I have it indicates A-flat and in other versions on youtube ive heard A-flat. Does anybody know if this is a mistake or not?

  • @kirbymage are you suggesting he all of a sudden is singing in f major? listen again

  • I posted the druce completion of this. Much better in my opinion.

    Cordially, Joshua M. Abramson

  • I hesitated beetween Karl Bohm, Harnoncourt or karajan! Sorry but as usual, for Bohm's concert's: too slow, too heavy!

  • @mouthmouse Although Bohm uses a more Romantic approach, this is after all, a Requiem.

  • All the voices are amazing but the best one for me is the tenor!, this guy and Fritz Wund. were two of the greatest german tenors of all time. This part and the "Dies Irae" are in my opinion the best part of this Requiem. :).

  • The Bass looks like Brendel, Tenor is great, but a little slow for my taste

  • cuando ni los justos estarán seguros.....

  • I love the 4/5 bars from 1.46. The rising vocal line sounds brilliant. Anyone agree?

  • Thanks for uploading this! The best performance of the Requiem I have ever seen. Is this available on DVD?

  • @Marilyn1122 yes; you can find at any house music or record store Thanks

  • @Marilyn1122 This was released on DVD in 2005, but the original recording was made in 1971. I was particularly impressed by Walter Berry as most recordings drown out the bass's "Sonum", but he manages to make it come through seemingly effortlessly. I am not sure if he really does the whole phrase in one breath as it is possible to take some air in on the two s's before Sonum, but it looks and sounds seamless. How fortunate that this recording exists, and how good it is for a 40 year old one!

  • @Marilyn1122

One of the most amazing song ever seen. Would be very intersting to have the entire performance on the tube. Can anyone upload that?

    Amazing. Amazing.

  • Grand!!! Just like Sir Colin Davies version from 1967

  • Grand!!! Just like Sir Colin Davies version from 1967

  • beautiful!! i always listen this part of the requiem, every single day! i love it! in my opinion, is the best version that i ever listen thanks a lot!!

  • What a line up of soloists! Was that filmed in heaven?

  • YOU CAN FIND IT AT ANY HOUSE OF MUSIC OR APPLY ONLINE AT THE SITE OF THE DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON

  • 1:08 What an entry!

  • This is one of the most beautiful recorder ever made. The Director Karl Bohn it's simply perfect!!! the timing it's really perfect.

  • Beautiful. The voices are amazing, and I love the trombone too.

  • Magnífica música y excelentes voces.

  • i like the melody, its so divine...amazing

  • Flawless interpretation.

  • Peter Schreier - the best of the best!

  • damn... because of this VERSION... i can't hear the other interpretations on youtube

    this is a reference

  • Incredible performace. Is this version on CD at all

  • the soprano is astounding!!

but the other voices are perfect too!

    Mozart4ever

  • Excellent! Wonderful voices, supreme control!

Folks, any idea when was this recorded? All soloists look so young. I hardly recognised Christa Ludwig, and Peter Schreier I didn't at all.

And second question: is this available on DVD? Such a stellar vocal quartet is not to be missed. And Boehm is terrific too.

    Thanks a lot for posting.

  • @hardmission

    Mozart's music is perfect, gtfo.

  • what year this concert happened?

  • @bab0ulas In the 1960 years ! It's one of the most brilliant renditions.

  • @Thorneycroft1937

THE TENOR PART WILL ALWAYS REMAIN SUPREAM. No one likes basses anyway. haha, i do quite enjoy the alto part.

  • @fluffysquirl I love Bass, is clear and noble. I like so much

  • @hardmission horrible melody??? because you say that?

  • @bassbariton9 He is a barbarian Turk.....he doesnt know about civilized European culture...That s y we must never allow these Mongols to get in the EU

  • @bassbariton9 i think hardmission probably forgot or didn't know that this is a part of "mass of the dead" :)

  • @hardmission You must be out of your GD mind! This is real beauty. I am not exactly into all of the singing. It's Mozart, drama, love it.

  • @hardmission

How dare you say that you ignorant fool. The "melody" is composed by Mozart !!! And these singers are the best ones of the 1960/70 years. Don't insult people who like and admire this wonderful music.

  • @Idomeneo155 Everybody has the right to critisize everything.. including music. cos Music is not untouchable. Yes this melody disturbs everyone who is in good health mentally . These men and women widening their mouth such a monster and making ear- scratching noices makes me disturb. And person like you insulting other people because of their opinions makes me sick...There are so many insulting words which I could write to respond your post but believe me you don't worth it.

  • @hardmission I agree with you in two points

1- Art needs to be critizised

2- There's no need to insult anybody in order to show disagreement.

However you are completly out of focus. According to you we are mentally insane because we like Tuba Mirum, I find that comment very offensive. After seeing the video you have in your channel I presume you prefer oriental music, ok but please don't say something is horrible only because you don't know, that speaks terrible about yourself, my friend

  • @hardmission Have just seen your video !!! How do you call this bullshit ? I am not wondering that you don't like this wonderful music posted by bassbariton9. I am fed up with your ignorant turkish guys. Why do you have to show everyone how badly educated you are ??? Nobody is interested in your foolish comments.

  • @Idomeneo155 Dear Brat of Hitler

I had promised myself not to answer you in my previous post. But you really forcing my limits and I strictly recommend you being more polite to everything and everybody which has "Turk" prefix. We were talking about music not nationality since your last post. you proved us what kind of a damn racist man you are.it is definitely expected such a comment only from a man such like you who is grandchild of a nation which made geratest genocide of history

  • @hardmission

You had better look at your own history !!! When you talk about "genocide" don't forget the horrible genocide which came from your nation. Or have you never heard of genocide against the Armenians about 100 yrs ago ? But you don't have to go so far in the past. What about terrorism caused by the Islamists ? What about arranged marriages, genital mutilations ?? Most Islamist are still living in the Dark Ages !!! Think of your own nation before calling anyone else "racist".

  • @Idomeneo155 Why dont you tell him about all the crimes that Turks did against Greeks and Balkans generally for over 400 years....??? They are one of the most barbaric tribes that lived ever....

  • @Idomeneo155 And sound isnt the reason that he is disturbed about this music ....The real reason is that is a Christianic hymn.

  • @hardmission

Oh, my God... you have no idea what are you talking about, my friend.

Maybe because you are Turkish you don't know: Requiem is a Mass for dead people.Tuba Mirum describes the final Judgement and punish of all deads and alive, is logical that it has to sound deep and dark, Mozart did such a reverential, beauty passage plenty of sense and emotion. Maybe you didn't finish to hear it, because soprano an mezzo passages are really sweet, or maybe you simply don't like occidental music

  • @hardmission You are one screwed up guy. That is what Mozart is to you?

  • @hardmission

    You are an imbecile.

  • @tenore8 Probably you expect me to swear you. But I won't. Cos this is the easiet and cowardest method to use against someone on internet. But İf you do not hesitate to come my place I assure you I can give you the most REASONABLE answer related this issue.

  • @hardmission it's a mess for the death, it is suposed to be scary

  • @hardmission motherfucker! THIS IS MUSIC, go to lisen bieber hardshit

into English Son of Bitchhhhhh! why are you so defersive as if this bellowing man fucked your mother from her anus. if he did not yet send her to me I assure you I can satisfy her so does all Turkish men.

  • @hardmission ulan göt lalesi madem sevmiyorsun ne diye izliyorsun orospu çocuğu..siktir git şurdan godoş

  • @hardmission ulan göt lalesi madem sevmiyorsun ne diye izliyorsun orospu çocuğu..siktir git şurdan godoş

  • Comment removed

  • @hardmission Fuck You ,stupid

  • @hardmission Well, it's from a Death Mass and about the fear of God coming to judge everyone and everything at doomsday. Not totally off there, but can't say I agree about the melody.

  • @hardmission Evet.. Ne dinliyorsun sevmiyorsan... Söylediklerinden de cahillik akıyor zaten. Hristiyanlık içerdiği için mi yani?

  • Adorable performance by Walter Berry but Peter Schreier clearly dominates this video.

  • @Thorneycroft1937

Personally, I like most Gundula's line (soprano)

  • Tha magic starts at 1:06

  • @Thorneycroft1937

I disagree: The bass is also great in text and music

"The trumpet, scattering a wondrous sound through the sepulchres of the regions, will summon all before the throne."

The Bass line is simply spectacular

  • Great piece, and great singing.

  • la mejor tuba mirum que he escuchado...

  • Can I find the entirety of this somewhere on youtube? I like this version much better than the one I already have.

  • peter schreier is king

  • From the left profile the tenor (Schreier) reminds me of Christopher Walken.

  • Stunning performance by excellent vocalists. Love that Walter Berry!

  • I love this performance! The bass seems like he has a joke that he's making to himself (he has one of those secret smiles) and the tenor just comes in like he is the shit (but in the awesome way) The alto seems like she really feels the music and the soprano... seems like she is concentrating a lot but still sounds good :D

  • best damn bass rendition ever...

  • @rohrflote You're damn right!!!

  • this is the best interpretation of this requiem piece , I also think as the same , as williammorley, the other ones , do it too quickly and too tough, Its ! a requiem... so its must be solemn and inpiring...

  • Don Walter Berry, exelente interpretación, exelente nada que decir

  • ccc

  • Great performance by the tenor.

  • There is a correct pronounciation of latin. I was tought how to correctly pronounce this words and they have nothing to do with the Italian language.

But bottom line is .. who cares how they pronounce it? The voices are wonderful!

  • I agree with aseshet. Who is to tell how original Latin was pronounced? Or even 18th century Latin in Austria or Germany? I believe that pronouncing syllables like "ce" and "ci" as in Italian (cherry, chief) is just deviation from original Latin (Roman) where those sounds would be pronounced as "tze" and "tzi". Same goes for "ge". Should not be "Jerry" but "Gary".

  • I agree with aseshet. Who is to tell how original Latin was pronounced? Or even 18th century Latin in Austria or Germany? • Does anyone know the date this was recorded?

  • I've heard - but I'm not sure - this was recorded about 20 years ago.

  • I like this interpretation very much, it's very well balanced. And the voices of the soloists are wonderful!

  • I like this recording! The "old generation" had more reverence for the music, composer, and maybe in God ,than singers nowadays. I guess this fact influences the qualitiy of the voice. - Just listen carefully You`ll hear the differnce!

(But why took Karl Boehm always such slow tempi!!!)

  • i love how all theis faces show practically no motion. i sometimes miss that apathic and meditative aspect in interpreting music nowadays, there is so much pretentious acting.

  • It`s a requiem not an opera.

  • thanks for pointing out what nobody knew

  • Vocal quality is unfortunate that the pronunciation of words in Latin is wrong!!!

  • The Roman Empire was gigantic. From the Nile in ancient Egypt to the British isles. From the Iberic peninsula to the middle east. From today's Libya to the Rhineland in Germany. In that immense empire Latin was an unifying force as language of administration, justice, army and (later) the Church. But there was no standard Latin pronouncation. A Roman in Rome will have sounded different from a Roman in Constantinople.

  • Apart from sepulchra I hear no mispronounciation. What part do you mean?

  • There are several places where "c" is pronounced incorrectly according to Church pronunciation, spargens is incorrect, in fact most of the g's are wrong. It is important to remember that this should use Ecclesial pronuniation and not classical pronunciation.

  • @croc17 you cannot sing the way you speak all the time.

  • @croc17 Please point them out, for I can not hear it. This is wonderful in my mind, and to me this feele's like end of 60's, early 70's (according to the glasses really).

  • @galenatt 0.16, 0.41, 0.50, 0.52 etc. I'm not disputing the quality of the singing as it is excellent, I am simply pointing out that as this is part of the Requiem Mass it should Church Latin rather than Classical Latin, which has "ge" pronounced as in Gerry not Gary.

  • @croc17 I will dispute with you no more. We both agree it is a masterpiece, but have different selection of pronounciation. Go in peace, and let us agree it is a womderful piece of music.

  • ermoso

  • Bonne interprétation! Je l'ai aimé!

  • Walter Berry was an excellent singer, I compared this clip with another one and Walter is far superior, power, extremely good breath control too.

How he was able to sing the first phrase of this on one breath is amazing.

  • Excellent!!!!

  • that soprano has an awesome beehive!

best preformance i've heard so far, of my favourite movement of mozart's requiem

  • Walter Berry ist ein Konig

  • i prefer the version of karajan

  • best version ever seen...

  • they could show the tuba, he´s great. Walter Berry 6 stars!

  • Classic recording!

  • his eye brows match his glasses lmao

  • NO!

  • Generally I don't like high-pitched voices, but in this rendition both soprano and tenor are very impressive. Because of them I keep restarting this clip again and again.

  • The pronounciation which several commenters are questioning is the German pronounciation of Latin. There is a peculiar French pronounciation and there is the Italian or Church Latin we are familiar with. None is "correct". The Italian pronounciation is merely the tradition, but not in German speaking lands.

To call any the correct pronounciation is in itself incorrect. "Correct" according to what? Church Latin itself is a corruption of Classical Latin.

  • When we sang Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, our conductor made sure we sang the "German-Latin" because, as he said, "It's what Beethoven would have wanted." lol

  • @aseshet Although that is true of the grammar, a number of scholars have quasi-demonstrated that the Italian pronounciation is the most similar to the republican and principate eras, due in part to the vowl and consonant inheritance of Italian. The north of germany was never conquered by the romans and thus still possess the closed vowels of the celtic root.

  • BRAVI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's interesting that none of the soloists move their heads in the slightest while singing, and the sound (of course) comes out clear as a bell. I think it's quite a contrast with many soloists today who seem to move about rather more when singing.

  • Mostly German people...they pronounce differently. Word.

  • What's with that pronounciation? o_O

    Awesome interpretation, though

  • This is God speaking, though maybe not in perfect latin, rather Mozart german.

  • I like that they don't use the italian accent :)

  • I think it is a mistake and not a singer election of director

  • @bassbariton9 hey, u posted this didnt you, is there a dvd that i can buy of this, its the best recording ive heard so far

  • It's hard to believe that the bass-barytone pronounce "sepulshra" instead of "sepulkra"... Is this pronouncation a particular choice of the director ?

  • fuckin' powerful voices! or this is the recording quality. anyway, sounds powerful!

  • Fantastic performance of all soloïsts!

  • Sepulchra in latin is sepulcro in spanish and the correct pronunciation is "sepulkra"

  • Im Mexican, Im latin, and this pronunciation is bad.

  • Thank you, Bass, for placing the Latin text on this video and for posting this work.

    Perfect tempo.

  • and 'sepulchra' its a mute 'h' in latin = Sepulcra. Details...

  • Bwah! Ha! Ha! HA! HAHA! I'm sorry.

  • This is the kind of music that speaks to your soul.

  • Hopefully, it speaks for your soul. :o)

  • what i like the most about this interpretation is the tempo and the great pronunciation of latin.

  • anakesmortem

Actually the 'g' are not pronounced like that. Not when they are 'ge' since that is like 'je'. I prefer Gardiner conducting the Requiem, mainly because of the tempo, but this one is very good aswell :)

  • Thanks for putting the Latin text together with the music. it's a beautiful video!

  • The bass bariton (first singer) is Mr. Walter Berry from Austria. (I think, and i'm almost sure). Borne in 1929 and he died in 2000.

  • The Tenor
