Bellissimo. Unico neo la pronuncia latina del basso (cantante peraltro eccezionale): "spargens" e non "sparghens"; "regionum" e non "reghionum"; "coget" e non "coghet"
@royaloak67 I believe this latin pronunciation is the german way to pronunce latin, therefore the very correct way to sing this piece. Peter Schreier sings also 'resurGHet'. In fact, the 'mistakes' are from the other singers (e.g. the alto singing 'quidquid' instead of 'kvidkvid')!
Walter Berry is just amazing here and his superb breath control and reserves shows us why he had such a wonderful rich and full tone and long career. Thank you.
Sublime!!! Il miglior Tuba mirum che ho asoltato. Difficile dire chi sia il piu' bravo dei 4 ma il soprano è paradisiaca, il tenore eccezionale ed il basso invidiabile, che bella emissione!!!

@Ferdotron I have listened again, and you must be mistaken, he is definitely singing an A natural, creating an F major arpeggio. Try playing an A-flat on an instrument while you are listening to this and you will see that he is singing a half-step higher.
I love this piece, it is one of my favorites, but Im a little confused because @1:08 the tenor sings an A but in the copy of the score that I have it indicates A-flat and in other versions on youtube ive heard A-flat. Does anybody know if this is a mistake or not?
All the voices are amazing but the best one for me is the tenor!, this guy and Fritz Wund. were two of the greatest german tenors of all time. This part and the "Dies Irae" are in my opinion the best part of this Requiem. :).
@Marilyn1122 This was released on DVD in 2005, but the original recording was made in 1971. I was particularly impressed by Walter Berry as most recordings drown out the bass's "Sonum", but he manages to make it come through seemingly effortlessly. I am not sure if he really does the whole phrase in one breath as it is possible to take some air in on the two s's before Sonum, but it looks and sounds seamless. How fortunate that this recording exists, and how good it is for a 40 year old one!
beautiful!! i always listen this part of the requiem, every single day! i love it! in my opinion, is the best version that i ever listen thanks a lot!!

What a horrible melody!!! if I hear this voices in a silent dark place I would probably run away without looking behind.!! This kind of music reminds me the horror movies which terrified me during my childhood ! by the way these performers also resembles the actors who acted in the movies I mentioned above...
@bassbariton9 He is a barbarian Turk.....he doesnt know about civilized European culture...That s y we must never allow these Mongols to get in the EU
How dare you say that you ignorant fool. The "melody" is composed by Mozart !!! And these singers are the best ones of the 1960/70 years. Don't insult people who like and admire this wonderful music.
@Idomeneo155 Everybody has the right to critisize everything.. including music. cos Music is not untouchable. Yes this melody disturbs everyone who is in good health mentally . These men and women widening their mouth such a monster and making ear- scratching noices makes me disturb. You had better look at your own history !!! When you talk about "genocide" don't forget the horrible genocide which came from your nation. Or have you never heard of genocide against the Armenians about 100 yrs ago ? But you don't have to go so far in the past. What about terrorism caused by the Islamists ? What about arranged marriages, genital mutilations ?? Most Islamist are still living in the Dark Ages !!! Think of your own nation before calling anyone else "racist".
@Idomeneo155 Why dont you tell him about all the crimes that Turks did against Greeks and Balkans generally for over 400 years....??? They are one of the most barbaric tribes that lived ever....
Oh, my God... you have no idea what are you talking about, my friend.
Maybe because you are Turkish you don't know: Requiem is a Mass for dead people.Tuba Mirum describes the final Judgement and punish of all deads and alive, is logical that it has to sound deep and dark, Mozart did such a reverential, beauty passage plenty of sense and emotion. Maybe you didn't finish to hear it, because soprano an mezzo passages are really sweet, or maybe you simply don't like occidental music

I love this performance! I agree with aseshet. Who is to tell how original Latin was pronounced? Or even 18th century Latin in Austria or Germany? I believe that pronouncing syllables like "ce" and "ci" as in Italian (cherry, chief) is just deviation from original Latin (Roman) where those sounds would be pronounced as "tze" and "tzi". Same goes for "ge". Should not be "Jerry" but "Gary".
I like this recording! The "old generation" had more reverence for the music, composer, and maybe in God ,than singers nowadays. I guess this fact influences the qualitiy of the voice. - Just listen carefully You`ll hear the differnce!
(But why took Karl Boehm always such slow tempi!!!)
i love how all theis faces show practically no motion. i sometimes miss that apathic and meditative aspect in interpreting music nowadays, there is so much pretentious acting.
The Roman Empire was gigantic. From the Nile in ancient Egypt to the British isles. From the Iberic peninsula to the middle east. From today's Libya to the Rhineland in Germany. In that immense empire Latin was an unifying force as language of administration, justice, army and (later) the Church. But there was no standard Latin pronouncation. A Roman in Rome will have sounded different from a Roman in Constantinople.
There are several places where "c" is pronounced incorrectly according to Church pronunciation, spargens is incorrect, in fact most of the g's are wrong. It is important to remember that this should use Ecclesial pronuniation and not classical pronunciation.
@croc17 Please point them out, for I can not hear it. This is wonderful in my mind, and to me this feele's like end of 60's, early 70's (according to the glasses really).
@galenatt 0.16, 0.41, 0.50, 0.52 etc. I'm not disputing the quality of the singing as it is excellent, I am simply pointing out that as this is part of the Requiem Mass it should Church Latin rather than Classical Latin, which has "ge" pronounced as in Gerry not Gary.
@croc17 I will dispute with you no more. We both agree it is a masterpiece, but have different selection of pronounciation. Go in peace, and let us agree it is a womderful piece of music.
Generally I don't like high-pitched voices, but in this rendition both soprano and tenor are very impressive. Because of them I keep restarting this clip again and again.
The pronounciation which several commenters are questioning is the German pronounciation of Latin. There is a peculiar French pronounciation and there is the Italian or Church Latin we are familiar with. None is "correct". The Italian pronounciation is merely the tradition, but not in German speaking lands.
To call any the correct pronounciation is in itself incorrect. "Correct" according to what? Church Latin itself is a corruption of Classical Latin.
When we sang Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, our conductor made sure we sang the "German-Latin" because, as he said, "It's what Beethoven would have wanted." lol
@aseshet Although that is true of the grammar, a number of scholars have quasi-demonstrated that the Italian pronounciation is the most similar to the republican and principate eras, due in part to the vowl and consonant inheritance of Italian. The north of germany was never conquered by the romans and thus still possess the closed vowels of the celtic root.
It's interesting that none of the soloists move their heads in the slightest while singing, and the sound (of course) comes out clear as a bell. I think it's quite a contrast with many soloists today who seem to move about rather more when singing.
It's hard to believe that the bass-barytone pronounce "sepulshra" instead of "sepulkra"... Is this pronouncation a particular choice of the director ?
la entrada de trombo, em sembla extraordinaria ,i per suost la del baix i tenor ,tal vegada siga de les versions que he escoltata en general que mes m,agraden inclose mezzo, soprano i acompanyament d,orquestra
Actually the 'g' are not pronounced like that. Not when they are 'ge' since that is like 'je'. I prefer Gardiner conducting the Requiem, mainly because of the tempo, but this one is very good aswell :)
Incredible baryton and tenor!! such perfection!! i think that is a tribute that Mozart can be proud of!!

Mitarestriktor 1 year ago
I agree with aseshet. Who is to tell how original Latin was pronounced? Or even 18th century Latin in Austria or Germany? I believe that pronouncing syllables like "ce" and "ci" as in Italian (cherry, chief) is just deviation from original Latin (Roman) where those sounds would be pronounced as "tze" and "tzi".

Does anyone know the date this was recorded?

I've heard - but I'm not sure - this was recorded about 20 years ago.

I like this interpretation very much, it's very well balanced. And the voices of the soloists are wonderful!

This is terrible in every respect except for the music itself.

MrTenor86 2 years ago
i love how all theis faces show practically no motion. i sometimes miss that apathic and meditative aspect in interpreting music nowadays, there is so much pretentious acting.

It`s a requiem not an opera.

Vocal quality is unfortunate that the pronunciation of words in Latin is wrong!!!
lukboomb 2 years ago
The Roman Empire was gigantic. From the Nile in ancient Egypt to the British isles. From the Iberic peninsula to the middle east. From today's Libya to the Rhineland in Germany. In that immense empire Latin was an unifying force as language of administration, justice, army and (later) the Church. But there was no standard Latin pronouncation. A Roman in Rome will have sounded different from a Roman in Constantinople.

Apart from sepulchra I hear no mispronounciation. What part do you mean?
galenatt 2 years ago
There are several places where "c" is pronounced incorrectly according to Church pronunciation, spargens is incorrect, in fact most of the g's are wrong. It is important to remember that this should use Ecclesial pronuniation and not classical pronunciation.

@croc17 you cannot sing the way you speak all the time.

@croc17 Please point them out, for I can not hear it. This is wonderful in my mind, and to me this feele's like end of 60's, early 70's (according to the glasses really).
galenatt 1 year ago
@galenatt 0.16, 0.41, 0.50, 0.52 etc. I'm not disputing the quality of the singing as it is excellent, I am simply pointing out that as this is part of the Requiem Mass it should Church Latin rather than Classical Latin, which has "ge" pronounced as in Gerry not Gary.
croc17 1 year ago
@croc17 I will dispute with you no more. We both agree it is a masterpiece, but have different selection of pronounciation. Go in peace, and let us agree it is a womderful piece of music.

Walter Berry was an excellent singer, I compared this clip with another one and Walter is far superior, power, extremely good breath control too.
How he was able to sing the first phrase of this on one breath is amazing.

es verdad que los hombres para alcanzar esos tonos los castran?????????? ught!!!!!!!1
MrPipiolo2007 2 years ago
NO!

Church Latin itself is a corruption of Classical Latin.
aseshet 2 years ago 12
When we sang Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, our conductor made sure we sang the "German-Latin" because, as he said, "It's what Beethoven would have wanted." lol
babsalaba 2 years ago 3

Actually the 'g' are not pronounced like that. Not when they are 'ge' since that is like 'je'. I prefer Gardiner conducting the Requiem, mainly because of the tempo, but this one is very good aswell :)

The bass bariton (first singer) is Mr. Walter Berry from Austria. (I think, and i'm almost sure). Borne in 1929 and he died in 2000.
