  • i couldn't have got through this if he would have left that shit on........

  • right when this video started i thought to myself "baked" hahah

  • Great stuff Ed!

  • Luv ur lesson..I have one info ..the original line for I'll take u there was made in Jamaica ..the name is liquidator ..it was recorded before I'll take you there.Big up all Jamaicans...Danny Miller seh So..

  • I think i love you.

  • HELPFUL for the history . and nice job sir.

  • History was awesome too.

  • Excellent information! Great stuff on the right hand technique. Thanks for posting.

  • At 5:00 I kept waiting for "ooh yeah" to come in.

  • I really want to be able to play an instrument, my Dad plays the rhythm guitar, my brother plays the bass and a bit of guitar, and most of my family plays an instrument, so I feel like I should be playing an instrument, my Dad said he would get me a bass for Christmas, I was wondering if it would be a good idea, should I start playing the bass?

  • @ClanChattan14 - Yes!

  • @BassGuitarMag

    is it easy to learn?

  • @ClanChattan14 - It can be.

  • @ClanChattan14 Yes dude! It's crazy fun!

  • @ClanChattan14 Yeah, definatley get a bass. Its quite quick to pick up straight forward tunes. Pick a song you like and learn the bassline and play along, it does great things for a beginners confidence to actually be able to play along to a song they like. Forget leaning all the chords and whatnot straight away, it'll just bog you down at first and probably put you of. A great book i would recommend for when you get abit more into is Bass Guitar for Dummies.

  • @ClanChattan14 only if you think bass is right for you

  • @ClanChattan14 If I was you I would try lead guitar... I mean since your brother and your dad play other types, you could play with them.

  • @skaterunknown4ever

good idea but, I wont be able to, they live in Scotland and I live in England, it would be to much trouble bringing my guitar on a 40 min flight, and if I use theirs we'll still be 1 guitar short

  • @ClanChattan14 Oh... Well then it just depends on what you find best. ;)

  • @ClanChattan14 bass is insanely good instrument, for any kind of music, from jazzy double bass style to guitar-like ultra-dist with tons of FX

  • Ed, you rock. I'm a drummer and I was curious about reggae bass and why I love it so much. You did a great job breaking it down.

  • @laxifist111 - Thanks. Not the definitive story I think, but an overview to get started with.

  • Does your book seel in Spain??? because I'd love to be able to buy it in a Music store, instead of having to buy it via online.

    p.s. you rock!!!

  • Thanks alot for this post! I'm a guitarist but I've always loved reggae bass lines so I went to look some up here and I got more than I bargained for :) got to hear some reggae bass and got an interesting history lesson. Always wondered where ska fell into the mix and now I know. Thanks man. Oh yeah and don't let these youtube assholes get under your skin :)

  • @Romancandle5929 - Thanks.

  • please help! im new to the bass im just learning i have a yamaha rbx170 i wanna chang the strings ( im larning and wanting to play mostly rock and some reggea ) any idea what string are good for learners

  • sorry i have to say this but u had the history backwards. Ska came first, then rocksteady, then reggae, then dub, then dancehall. i have no clue when mento came around.

  • @GrimSqueaker627 - Uh, right. That's what I said. Check your ears. Mento was BEFORE ska, it was the folk music of Jamaica, mostly acoustic - banjos, rhumba box, etc.

  • Ed - love your contribution to the world of music. I'm quite surprised by some of the ridiculous comments I've seen about this video. Maybe I'm an "idiots" too. lol.

This is a great brief overview of Reggae concepts given in 7:45. "Funny" how when people (who ahem shall remain nameless) grasp concepts they can spend more time inventing their own grooves instead of trolling the web for licks.

Just my 2 cents but, alas, I am only one man.

  • nice video man .. keep up the good work .. I just had my new bass guitar :)

  • HEY! I LOVE YOUR BASS! :)

  • If you like reggae, reggaeton, or dancehall music, "reggaelinx website"is an awesome site for you.

  • Yes,the joke is funny,it's so funny that almost every cover band on the planet in any tourist resort, cruise ship or local pub use it whenever they are going to play a some reggae songs...It's done,over-done.Reggae was created by very poor people coming from the shanty towns, this whole movement was created by ancestors of the slaves that was stolen from Africa.

I thought BassGuitar Magazine was about bass playing and music.Where are the editors? How can the BassGuitar Magazine support this?

  • @flatwoundtickler

Seriously dude, lighten up! He is just having fun with it, and in the end isn't that what reggae is about? Yeah, Bob's lyrics sometimes dealt with oppression, but always with hope for the future. It's positive, upbeat, fun music. Are you from Jamaica? Did you write some of this music?

  • Comment removed

  • If you listened to a lot of reggae music it deals a lot with oppression, slavery and hardship.Think of reggae as Jamaica's blues. Now,think of somebody that would dress up as a poor black bum from 1920's and playing the blues.Maybe you'll understand...it's just very, very odd.

  • @flatwoundtickler What was the difference between a black bum and a white bum in the 1920s that would cause you to profile based on dress and race?

  • @flatwoundtickler You mean like John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd?

  • @flatwoundtickler

Seriously dude, lighten up! He is just having fun with it, and in the end isn't that what reggae is about? Yeah, Bob's lyrics sometimes dealt with oppression, but always with hope for the future. It's positive, upbeat, fun music.

Why so offended? Are you from Jamaica? Did you write some of this music? What gives you more of a personal connection than anyone else? You sound like a wannabe.

  • @flatwoundtickler You should tread cautiously when you criticize someone like Ed. He is an highly experienced bassist and boasts a resume that you couldn't gain in a dozen lifetimes. I have worked through several of his books and an a much better player as a result (Blues bass, walking basslines, etc)

Why so offended? Are you from Jamaica? A relative of Bob Marley? Did you write a few songs? Sounds like you are just a wannabe. Get over yourself.

  • @geowizard66 Perhaps he should dread cautiously instead?

  • @flatwoundtickler $100 says this dude is white.

  • @flatwoundtickler you're not serious, right? you can't be. This guy is one of the most respected music educators in the country.

  • @Blyss Yes,that's what surprised me.I know who is this.I've read a lot of his articles and I have learned a lot about bass playing through him.

  • @flatwoundtickler sorry , I'm black, I'm not offended and, from the looks of the posts, no one else is - but you, of course.

If you don't like it don't put too much more energy into it. I'm not. Have a great Sunday!

  • @Blyss sorry , I'm black, I'm not offended and, from the looks of the posts, no one else is - but you, of course.

If you don't like it don't put too much more energy into it. I'm not. Have a great Sunday!

  • @Blyss dammit - I was trying to reply to the "flatwound" dude ..and replied to myself! oy (wait...was that racist?!)

  • First of all, Bass Guitar Magazine has been out of print for years, I was one of the editors. This video has been online for 4 years, and you are the first person to complain out of 489,886 viewers... so I'm afraid you are out numbered. It is NOT going away. It IS about bass and music in case you didn't notice. "How can they support this?" You are reading in overtones to all of this that do not exist. You think it's offensive - I think it's a humorous TRIBUTE. Much respect. End of discussion.

  • @flatwoundtickler - Actually, I was going more for a Yellowman type thing, but... Okay, I get your point. I'm not taking this down, but sorry if you find it offensive. It doesn't hurt to have a sense of humor, maybe you can look at that for your own sake. People make fun of all sorts of things, not everyone likes it. It's not meant in a mean spirited way, most people can tell, but maybe that doesn't matter to you.

  • @flatwoundtickler - Perhaps you've heard of this, it's called - HUMOR. Maybe not. You don't think it's funny? Fine. That doesn't mean you have to call me an "idiots". What do you gain by attacking my personhood? Nothing. Do you think people will agree with you, and that makes you somehow better? Do you have some deep spiritual ownership of Reggae that makes this offensive to you? Are you perhaps Bob Marley's ghost? Two words - Chill out dude. Oops, that's 3 words.... maybe I AM an "idiots".

  • @BassGuitarMag I would consider it funny if you dress up like that, when watching reggae concerts,or going to vacation in Jamaica, maybe visiting the old studios or interviewing Robbie Shakespeare or Flabba Holt.Top that humor of yours with some black make-up and plastic dreads hanging from the hat.Or why not try to watch Ragga concerts in Kingston dressed like that...The outcome,(here I agree with you) would be hilarious...

  • @flatwoundtickler So, he's not allowed to wear an afro wig and platform shoes when playing funk? Not allowed to wear a zoot suit to play swing jazz? No spandex and long hair when playing metal? You sir are a bigger joke than anything on this video. Next time I want want the neighbor's party to end, I'll give you their address. Buzz killer deluxe.

  • @flatwoundtickler well first of all if your going say "idiots" at least have the right verb agreement aka.. have instead of has. Your poor grammar aside proving you are the true idiot, who are you to call ed an idiot?

  • Great Video! Now I´ve a complete material to study as I have just bought his book, which is as good as this video. A pity my hometown is the taxes´s country. So I paid much, much, much more than the price announced by Ed Friedland on this video. But it was a rewarding investment. I do recommend his book.

PS: I am not a sponsor, but a Bass and Reggae addicted!

Greetings from Sao Paulo- Southeast from Brazil! Jah Rastafari!

    Congratulations Mr Ed Friedland!<:

  • better than expertvillage !

  • I love all the explanations of the different subsets of reggae

  • 89 people are shit!

  • hey ed, do your books have tabs?

  • @ashmetalthebest - Many of them do, this one - Reggae Bass does.

  • @BassGuitarMag does the Slap Bass The Ultimate Guide have tabs too.

  • @DrugTestCongress - I don't see a problem with that. If it makes it quieter and cleaner... why not?

  • hey ed , are you using flat wound strings ? if you are , which ones ? great bass playing by the way man ! keep it up

  • @buzzkilbum - Yes, but it was so long ago I don't remember which ones. Possibly Lakland Joe Osborn flats, which are made by GHS I believe.

  • Ja!

  • @DrugTestCongress - You listen to 10 Foot Ganja Plant, and then you say I'M the bad influence? LOL!

  • ahah nice man. you think next one you could do like dub style reggae? the dancehall one was cool but itd be cool to see you play dub.

  • awesome playing! please help stop genital cutting of baby boys. thank you and keep playing! t

  • @ballm0use - Hey, it wasn't ME.

  • @BassGuitarMag sometimes doing nothing at all is evil enough. I like your style! and how you explain all the different ways to plas

  • @ballm0use - Okay, thanks. But chill on the genital mutilation stuff... this is a bass video man! Keep it in context.

  • What is the song being played that starts around 4:52?

Great video and great sound!!! I am going to buy this book sometime soon.

  • @saxdude2012 - Jammin' by Bob Marley

  • You have a real sense of humor. Also real love for the bass too. Good combo!

  • can i just say this guy is the fucking man?

  • ROTFL!!! completely out of head but everytime the number one!!! Ed Friedland is the Best

  • I gotta say

    ... that was awesome.

  • wanna give me bass lessons plz :D???

  • Hey man, that was awesome!

  • i have the book, but which track is the last one in the vid...its also the one when he "smokes a joint rolled up in the sunday newspaper"

  • what about the fucking Bad Brains.....?

  • @chpthncook37 - The F'ing Bad Brains... great band. Heavily Reggae influenced. Not within the scope of my book.

  • great seems like usted conoce

    Jah bless

  • Can you recommend a good guitar or brand for the style you play at 4:20?

  • @hawkeyesurfer oh i see what you did there

  • all you guys need to listen to some studio 1 and treasure isle music. look up duke read and coxsone dod, expose your self to things other than ub40, sublime and bob marley.

  • nice lesson, nice playing. There are not many good books out there on Reggae bass either so thanks for making that.

  • excellent brief lesson to my country's music history, wont buy your book but i will watch this lesson over again!

  • thanks I learned a lot. I'm a percussionist but I love bass. I would love to learn bass one day. What a groovy instrument

  • I am german, 50 years old and on stage since I was 14 (fo- fo- fo- fo- fo- fo- fo- fourteen). I started with piano, but at the age of 12 I started to play the bass - becouse I was so into the sound of the deep piano-strings. I just love the sound of the bass. Playing any instrument is to learn all the time, it´s a live-time evolution. Since I discovered Ed and his vids I learned a lot by watch him play. Especially love his face when he falls into bass - trance.... I want a job like yours!

  • @The1Kong don't we all....

  • Comment removed

  • @crushbudder - First I've ever heard of this problem.

  • @BassGuitarMag Yeey! Good news! Must have been my CDrom! No cipping when palyed from my old CD-player. Sorry I was quick to post without checking the disk on a different player first.

  • I have this book - I love reggae bass and this book has great examples.

The music is fun and the book has lots of fun facts.

  • i had thought u posted to teach but u played rather than teach!

  • @vicmexe - Want a refund?

  • @BassGuitarMag "Want a refund?"

    Priceless!

"but u played rather than teach"

    Actually he did both!

  • @vicmexe Well, it certainly taught me a few things. Not all lessons are about theory and showing you how to play licks note-for-note, treat this as a mini-primer or overview of reggae bass.

  • @vicmexe It is to teach bass players to play reggae, not to teach non bass players to be bass players.. If you can already play bass, this is a great intro to reggae bass playing! Ed is perfect!

  • Thanks for the upload! These are valuable lessons!

  • The first guy is really good!' Im not really into it but i think all reggae musicians have to smoke pot because if someone in the band is playing sober it messes the timing up and ruins the hole feel.

  • Ha Ha - Sunday Newspaper Rolling Paper... Your Great Ed. Thanks for the years of valuable information. Happy Holidays!!!

  • Thanks for the Reggae history lesson ...cool dude

  • Hey Ed - I noticed that you don't always alternate fingers, it sometimes seems you use your index more, especially with quick successing notes. Do you do that on purpose ? It sure feels like it adds to the feel.

  • @makke1977 - it is an unconscious thing, it's about getting the articulation to be sloppy. Certain grooves work nice that way.

  • if you want to play reggae bass WELL, put really old strings or flatwounds on your single-coil bass, turn the tone down and only use the neck pickup, never EVER play with a pick and don't always play on the down beat....but most importantly, listen to SUPERCAT. Old school dancehall has the best basslines around. Learn your riddims like jazz musicians learn standards.

  • Sir, "Jazz ... can mean anyone from Louis Armstrong to >>>... KENNY G" ?!?!??!?!?!

... i BEG your pardon?!??! Jazz ... cannot mean Kenny G!!! Kenny G doesn't play jazz!

i refer you to Pat Metheney's comments on both Louis Armstrong and Kenny G. And I also refer you to ANY one of Louis' recordings.

Money & popularity are NOT standards of accomplishment!

  • @itswitzmoab - Pardon me, but regardless of your opinion of Mr. G, he still falls into the general category of jazz. I'm not endorsing his music, just making a point about the extremes to which the label is applied and comparing it to the world of Reggae.

Thanks, but I am very familiar with Louis, and Pat Metheny, and unfortunately - Kenny G.

  • @BassGuitarMag good point ... then i hope you have read Louis' comments about public understanding of jazz from his first book (Swing That Music) where ... in 1936 ... he laments that the public simply doesn't recognize good swing band from a straight players, unable to get away from the score. ! Ironic, eh .... ?!? Please, no offense meant. Great bass playing.

  • @itswitzmoab - I know from playing jazz for 35 years that the public doesn't know what the hell they're listening to! That has a lot to do with jazz's lack of popularity and why people think Michael Jackson was a genius.... Oh well.

  • One of the best lessons I've seen on youtube mate. It's really great and important that you describe the culture and feel as well. Something 90% of vids here lack. Off to buy ur book now, lol.

  • BARTHEZ IS A BASSIST

  • nice video :) very helpful

  • that is so sick

  • good video, some funny stuff too hahahah, after watching this video i just realize that i both ur book for my bass player.

  • good video, some funny stuff too hahahah

  • I am Chilean and have a small band of reggae Christian, want to know if you allow that it uses these sequences for a song, it is of great help for us because newly we begin, I am to you very grateful if you agree and if not also I am grateful for teaching music so well like you do it

  • @moscostrato - Well, the rhythm tracks in the book are copyrighted material that belongs to Hal Leonard publishing. So I don't recommend using them for commercial purposes. If you want to play along with them, fine... but I wouldn't want you to make a record with them and try to sell them.

  • @BassGuitarMag Ok, I understand it, thank you very much for his amiability and good luck with his musical projects. :)

  • @BassGuitarMag Ed, you're a bad ass bassist - and a bad ass teacher, too! As an on an off guitarist, I just fell in love with the bass guitar (older Budweiser), and your outstanding books open me the path - and yes, I know, the bass guitar is not the "easy" guitar, and of course sight reading is dangerous... thanks for your outstanding work!

  • @BassGuitarMag Sir, "Jazz ... can mean anyone from Louis Armstrong to >>>...

  • awesome vid man. loved to hear not only about the instrument but also about the history of the music.

  • your create the bass secuences?

  • @moscostrato - You mean the rhythm tracks? Yes, with the help of a band called Neon Prophet.

  • great video, big up!!!

  • there is something bad ass about you ..and i like it

  • @funkyfacewash - Thanks. I'm what you might call a stealth bad ass.

  • this is a cool video.

  • ann offtopic question:

why did YOU, mr Ed, started playing bass? Why not guitar for example and so on. Looking forward to hear from you

  • @feverhood - I did start on guitar, but also started playing upright bass in school. Why? Because I already knew the notes from playing guitar. Why did I stop playing guitar and switch to bass permanently? Guess I just didn't have the guitar player attitude - thankfully.

  • @BassGuitarMag Thanks for the comment! But on bass things are mostly easy to play (depends on music etc) Have you ever thought about getting back to guitar playing? Sorry for the lousy questions, It's just interesting to hear from someone "higher" :D

  • @feverhood - this is a common misconception - bass is easy to play. Well, on the surface it might appear so, but the real challenge is in making the music feel good. Most guitarists could pick up a bass and "play" it, but they wouldn't be able to lay it down and make it groove. The bass is like an iceberg - 90% of what is important lies below the water line. No, I have no interest in guitar except for using it for my personal needs.

  • @BassGuitarMag That's true. Thanks for the reply. I was kinda "lost" between those 2 instruments, since i have played both about 2 years. Now i have a bass, and i will keep it that way. Thanks a lot again. Cheers

  • I'm not white and I'm impressed and I'm very critical of bassists. My uncle played professionally before he passed. You make playing the bass look so easy. I just bought my bass, something I've wanted to do for years. I just hope that I am able to at least manage to create a few grooves. If nothing else, just to let off some steam. Keep it up :-).

  • @tinky471 - thanks.

  • whats the name of the song you play at 4:00? I like it alot:)

  • man that was cool i enjoyed that a lot ive been playing bass for a year now and ive always played muse, metallica, system of a down, and bands like that but now im on to reggae and its a weird transaction from the style i played to this any tips on how to really be able to make this kind of music for me?

  • @MajorTomSOAD - Smoke more weed.

  • @BassGuitarMag HELL YEA, GET HIGH EVERY DAY!

  • @BassGuitarMag

    I lol'd

  • Thanks so much for this excellent introduction! I'll check out your book!

  • WELL THANKS!!!

  • REALLY GOOD

  • Ed, your quick wit and skill with four strings are one of the only reasons I use Youtube. Keep on rockin' steady!

  • the rocksteady part is very awsome :D

  • but it is more rocksteady i think. but theres not a big difference, nice playin.

  • good stuff :D

  • hey Ed :) sounds good ..

can you maybe post the tabs from 2:07 to 2:28 ?

hope you understand my english :D

  • better 2:07 to 2:40 :D

  • on dira the tide is high de blondie ? comme accord à l'intro du tutoriel

  • Thats a great Video!

Thanks for Ideas for lines on Bass!

  • Great work Ed .Guys be appreciative of anyone that gives you information for free

and so easily accessable. How easy it is to forget how lucky the modern day musician is to receive information like this so easily.

  • @0414740684 word up to that. Took guys like us YEARS of PRE-Internet searching, digging and reading to learn stuff like this. Notice nothing he played was cheesey lounge crap. Thats hard to do with reggae sometimes!!

  • I really liked you spent seven minutes in the lilha the base of reggae great,,,

adicionace wish you more ... thanks .....*(obs) sou do brasil obrigado....

  • Thanks for the good info... details and history, Nice!

  • I appreciate this vid. Thanks!

  • you are the coolest person alive. im using ur bass method book 1. its very helpful and easy to learn. you are awsome

  • nice informative video. Keep it up!

  • your are white

  • @julanona - Why.... yes! You're absolutely right.

  • @julanona and so were the people who invented the double bass and the electric bass :o wow

  • @julanona but how the heck does he know how to play "Throw Me Corn".. I can't believe he's even heard that song!!

  • @julanona oh my god hes white AND can play reggea, maybe its only a cliché D:

But you didnt heard that by me ok?
