I saw the original manuscript of "La Campanella". It says allegretto and not presto. Why do people always want to play it Presto? I heard it in both versions many times before and they are worlds apart. The "Allegretto" has character and direction, and the "Presto" (like this version" loses it. Yes, if you play it "Allegretto" you can't show off, but it is about the touch that is virtuosic not the speed. Try and you will see, follow the composers indications and not the "traditional" ones.
she's a German-Japanese pianist, born in Munich 1988. sh'e won a number of awards, and is currently performing concert tours in Europe, Japan, and the US.
Well i will also say that she is plays piano like a robot. She is a little sensitive, she is amazingly acurate, she as as fast as she should be although in certain parts i thought she was sluggish which didn't sound very nice. Plus her way of playing has no depth .. maybe it's the piano, or the recording, but the whole part was a little empty (although it was full of notes)
Stunning! Leaving aside the pure fire and energy of Cziffra, this is the most polished, sparkling, and musical performance of La Campanella on You Tube.
O SWEET GAWD, i actually thot someone was messing with me when they sent me this link and was fast fowarding the vid or somethin until about 2:30 into the vid
after you hear this one , Kiisin does sound robotic .. he is the first man I heard perform it .. His D# is way too over done .. most the mens are ... the women even it out ..
How beautifull is this version ?!?!?!?? Wow .. ive heard over 20 versions of this piece and as hard as it is i would hate to critisize any of the others so I wont .. . Alice simply plays it as it was meant to be played all the way around .. She takes you inside the piece and makes you FEEL it .. Whew .. the others are too fast too regular too many mistakes .. although Nikolsky takes it to another level .. THANK YOU ALICE
look at those fingers!! thats one perfect fingers form to be a pianist!! The pinky is very strong...to me Cziffra finger form is the best for a pianist
I want everyone whose says that kissin is better to actually post a you tube video of themselves playing this song......you think she is practicing to impress all the haters....it takes time ALOT OF TIME to learn this song....i played piano for 10 years before quitting and after listhining to her i wish i never did...
Clarity is perfect. I love this performance. Every passage is clear and the base notes speak in the heavier chordal sections. She has so many colors in her fingertips.
Sara's technique reminds me of Horowitz, as if she was his student, though her interpretation, in comparison, has less variety of intonations and colours, and is less emotional. Anyway she plays beautifully.
@oflc123 Yeah I have her recording on my iPod.. She's extremely fast, but the best part of La Campanella is undoubtedly the last minute or so when at forte.. and Yundi Li plays the last part with versatility and elegance.. :D
I am impresioned when I watched any of the versions of this composition. I have respect to the players of this composition due it's difficult grade. I also respect Paganini and Liszt, the composers of this song (of course, Paganini made the original and Liszt adapted it the final to piano).
I enjoyed this more than Yundi Li's or Evgeny Kissin's version. It's quite different in the interpretation, but it's a breath of fresh air in a place where everyone is just competing to play the piece as fast as possible (Kissin so fast that he actually makes a substantial number of mistakes). The rubato is quite beautiful here, and you show in the finale that it's definitely not to make up for insecure playing. Well done.
Disliked this performance. This is a virtuoso piece. It does not lend itself to sporadic injections of rubato - that defeats the point of the piece and corrupts the persona of Liszt that this piece characterizes. Also the expressions on her face of pleasure at the most inactive parts of the piece are ill-fitting. This is a show piece - it is meant to leave people in awe, energized, and inspired; not somber, gloomy, or melancholic.
@jiririji He oìdo un par de versiones mas agradables para MI gusto, pero es de destacar y elogiar a estos Artistas jòvenes que aùn se dedican al Virtuosismo. Està escaseando por estas latitudes....
Alice... I have cry listening your "la campanella". Thanks for this big emotion! God bless your hands but expecially your clean and lovable soul. (from italy with love and admiration).
You know a piece of music has been perfect when you have listened to it 99 times and on your 100th time listing to it your eyes still close to its beautiful sound!
A really different interpretation of this piece... but I really like how she smiles while she plays:) It looks like she's having a really good time playing the piece and that's great:)
@jeromemyburgh 2 Sara is top, no doubt but also see and hear Lang Lang, AYApiano and last but not least YW1935 a young just 12 years old girl who perform this piece very well.
How anyone can view Kissin's version as definitive is beyond me.. Really? He's robotic, bet he plays it EXACTLY the same every time, (admittedly as most pianists are trained to do), yet also without feeling or emotion, (which NO pianist is taught). I was expecting something altogether more impressive having read some of the earlier reviews. Yundi's version is sheer class and possibly my favourite but Sara's is the one that makes me feel something I cannot put into words. Stunning effort, Sara.
@jeromemyburgh It is Cziffra's performance that sets the bar, far far superior in all respects, and there are huge differences compared to this version. She is a fine performer, but Kissin, Lisitsa and Yundi at least try to do the justice to the piece and maintain the flow of bell-sounds, after all this is "La Campanella". Perhaps drastic changes in tempo do not work well with this work, too disjointed.
@shellmanu I couldn't agree with you more. They are confused by the speed. The piece sounds best at 160%. Try it sometime. That where all the emotion comes out.
@jeromemyburgh I completely disagree with you. Not only is Kissin's music full of emotion, but it has a certain clarity and perfectness with dynamics that makes him such a great pianist. Yundi's was also very good, but Aurthur Rubenstein's was the best i've ever head. Not to mention Valentina Lisitsa's.
Mhm...the performance is good, but I agree with Usasswim: this is a very conventional interpretation to me, although it could be felt in a totally different way depending on the person who is listening to it.
Just one thing: why does she play in that horrible way btw 0.31 and 0.34?!?!? It's shit!
La Campanella probably is one of the most "personal" song to judge by a critic or by the audience and this because of the enourmous different interpretations we could have. This is is surely one of the most brillant I ever heard. Besides Alice shows a such control on the technique as well as a great skill to slow down the rythm when necessary, without looking too much cheese. In the end is a top five interpretation ever.
Still believe that the 2 most fine performances of this piece is played by Rubinstein or Kissin. All others are just something in between. Every time i play these pieces i always can't help thinking of what it may have sounded like when liszt's daughter played these pieces..
