@jorreerroj I'm not an indie dev myself, but the answer to your question is easy. Because there are still a lot less games on Mac than there are on PC, as a small independent studio it's always going to be easier to stand out and get attention from gamers on the Mac platform. Especially when it comes to RPGs there isn't a whole lot more to choose from on the Mac besides the Avernum series (and few big titles like Dragon Age), whereas the PC got all the big mainstream series in the genre.
@jorreerroj The developer of Avernum has been making a living out of developing Mac games for 17 years now, so clearly there's something wrong about your thinking. That said, given that *everyone* is using Mac-related devices these days (iPhones, iPads etc.), who knows how Apple gaming will develop in the future? PC gaming will survive (if barely), but independent developers might not.
@jorreerroj theres always possibilities stuff changes, they're having big success with the ipod/pad/phone stuff, depends on how it developes, could be they make a touch screen gaming ..thing.. i dont know, not a fan of touch screen myself tho, and i do use pc myself, but i see no reason to be sarcastic about the fact that stuff changes, developes etc, not like apple/mac arent getting income, might as well give people an option, yeah?
@Demiath I initially voted your comment up before reading everything you wrote. Yes, Spiderweb Software has been a mac developer for a very long time and I love their games. Shame on Jorrerroj, there are LOTS of gamers who own Macs. That said, I'm sick of the Mac vs PC, PC vs Linux and Wii vs XBOX360 vs PS3 debate/predictions. As long as there are options there will be people choosing them.
@TheeDarkCorner Don't really see your point about "options" which "people" will "choose". The reality of a capitalist economy is that there are going to be winners and losers at the end of the day. I like all platforms for what they offer, but I harbor no illusions that all of them will be successful and co-exist peacefully. The fate of platforms like Jaguar, Virtual Boy, Phillips CD-i, Turbografx and even fan boy favorites like the Dreamcast demonstrate the grim reality of the market.
jeff vogel has such a gr8 talent to write storys. avernum 6 was awsome. except for the few areas (the first 3 major quests) the game is brilliant in story. i found myself playing not for the_slaying_monsters_get_gear but to actualy know how the story goes along.
without spoiling, the last battle vs the manburner almost brought me tears due to its end, and i never liked the heroe involved but in those lines he really proved his worth.
Drugs and hookers/strippers...Why would you possibly WANT to be a junkie a.k.a complete loser ah the endless fail in that comment knows no bounds. not to mention using hookers... i pity you my brainless friend.

It might sound like hyberpole but I think we are in the golden age of 2d gaming now. Digital distribution whether through PC's or consoles has created a greater degree of freedom for game design than ever existed in the 2d pre polygon era. Nostalgia may be the source of much interest, but in many ways new 2d games are starting to surpass the games they draw inspiration from. Nostalgia is also one of the most powerful forces in gaming and not limited to 2d(nostalgia also spelled nintendo :P).
htdmc doesn't get it. A person plays a game like Avernum because there are no tactical, turn-based, stat heavy, challenging, rules enforced, PC -style RPGs on 360 or PS3, and there probably never will be.
And who gives a shit what games most people would choose? Most gamers today don't have the patience or intellect to complete a hardcore RPG. They'll stick to easy, dumb games like Modern Warfare and Batman.
I'm waiting for AVADON. I saw screens on spiderweb site. They look really cool. They could add one thing: If I wear shield or helmet, I should see it on my character in game screen. That would be nice! However for me Avernum is a very good game, very playable.
wow! I've played Avernum 1, 2 and 3 for years, but never got around to buying the newer ones. Watching this vid - the interface and gameplay really has evolved! I think I'll have to get the 4,5,6 trilogy as well now!
@Shinno1337 Wow, I'm really impressed by your sophisticated gaming preferences if your idea of "noob" is strategically complex turn-based roleplaying games with tons of stats to keep track...
@Shinno1337 Must be the most awesome NES RPG ever, then, since it runs in 1024*768 with 32-bit color. Would probably make a real NES console explode out of sheer exhaustion...
@Shinno1337 I think the graphics get the job done rather nicely, but keep in mind that independent games developed by a single programmer (like Avernum 6 was) can never hope to compete with big budget releases when it comes to the visuals. Thankfully, graphics ain't everything and this game's got better gameplay than most other RPGs today.
Independant games need budget and they don`t have it and theese games are created by a single person or a small group but he has a point aswell. Look at the graphics man we are talking about 2009 and games like FF X which came in 2001 looks atleast 1000 times better, has voice overs & .... Now i know they are being made by a small group and i don`t expect the same qual but i expect a 3D game it doesn`t even have to need voice overs [althou it would be great]. but this looks like nes.
@htdmc2010 I have no idea why anyone would "except" only 3D games to be made when there are in fact hundreds of 2D games still being released for all platforms. And given how fast 3D graphics age, A6 arguably has a much cleaner look than FF X with its blocky characters and flat terrain.
Either way, Avernum 6 couldn't possibly be mistaken for a NES game. The NES had a resolution of 256*240 with 48 colors while Avernum 6 runs in 1024*768 with 32-bit color. That's not a trivial difference.
It is like saying you would like to play atari 2600 Games instead of Xbox360 Games and that`s i guess a matter of taste but most people would chose xbox360 Games. We are living in 2010 and not in 1990 these games come 20 years to late. There are some 2D releases becouse of the nostalgic effect like New super mario or Sonic 4 but thats a different story becouse they also have 3D counterparts. The resolution is different but the grafik looks like a 8 - 16 bit game.
@htdmc2010 There are "some" 2D releases because of the "nostalgic effect"? Well, you must have been living under a rock or something for the past five-six years if you haven't noticed the resurgence of 2D gaming in the form of extremely well-received titles such as Odin Sphere, World of Goo, Limbo, Braid, Muramasa, Shank, Castle Crashers, Crayon Physics, Gish, Blueberry Garden, Saira etc. The list could go on and on (I haven't even included handheld titles!), and none of these games are remakes.
Actually i heard of World of Goo & Limbo an they are not JNR, RPG or adv they are more like puzzle games where you have to solve something and they ae as far as i know wiiware, xboxlive games not officialy in the stores and for something like that they are good games and i will check the other games you have mentioned thx for the list. Handheld Games are a different thing becouse of the limitation they have. I mean look at ds the 3d games look really bad mostly.
The main thing is as said for people wholove 2D it is ok but the times have changed. We could also play pong and that game would still be cool but we also have Virtua Tennis or Wii Sports. And although my very first game was Pong and i love that game i would easily choose virtua tennis or any other newer Tennis Game. World of goo is a puzzle game those games are mostly timeless like Tetris. I mean Tetris is over 20 years old and that game is still awesome.
@htdmc2010 Trust me; I *did* mean FF X. Tidus, Yuna, Wakku and the other inhabitants of Spira don't look half as great today as they did in 2001 - whereas Avernum 6 have less spectacular but also more timeless graphics which resist aging in a way that Final Fantasy's don't. Likewise, FFXIII looks jaw-droppingly amazing right now (and I did love that game for its graphics among other things) but check back in five years and Avernum 6 will still look OK while FFXIII will have aged considerably.
ehm i played FFX last year agai and i have to say the graphics are awesome even today but i guess we have different opinion. And avernum 6 has aged atleast 10 years even in todays standards [graphic wise]. Maybe it has a really good plot but to be true there are alot of other games who are competing with it and that is the main issue.
@htdmc2010 I might add that Avernum 6 doesn't compete with other games on the basis of its plot; instead it's all about the actual gameplay. The reason why hardcore gamers like this series is because it provides Western PC RPG gameplay which is both turn-based and involves controling a party of individually customizable characters. Most WRPGs nowadays are single-character with realtime combat but a lot of people want the classic party-based gameplay, which is why they buy games like Avernum 6.
@htdmc2010 Well, this developer will continue producing games like Avernum 6 (after all, he's been making a living out of this since 1994, so he's clearly doing *something right* ;).
Still, I can certainly see how someone without experience of similar games would find Avernum to be a bit strange at first. That's totally fine by me; I would only hope that anyone (and I'm not talking about you in particular here) who gets that impression actually plays the game before making judgements about it.
before I buy or play a game you see how it looks, what story it has and of course what genre it has atleast i do that. There is no possible way that a gamer plays every game that has been released otherwise that amer would take over 100 Years to complete all and not to forget every month there are new releases aswell :).
@htdmc2010 I agree, and precisely because one cannot expect everyone to have played every game ever released one would hope that few people commented on games they haven't actually played. Sadly, though, that's not the case.
As said before i thank you for uploading this video. And I know people who don`t like many comments from one Person on their videos becouse that looks kinda ugly or something and if thats the case you can delete our conversation otherwise i found it was an interesting conversation and i hope i didn`t bother you with it and wish all the best.
well you could be right i mean this game has a series so there has to be people that love these kind of games. It is just hard to understand the reason behind it and maybe it is the way you have described it. I just say it is as always a matter of taste and thankfully everyone has a different taste :). If the games were always the same that would be boring and repetetive. I hope for the fans of this series that it continues for them.
I try to think of a well thought response to this but the only thing that enters my mind is "This man is a compete idiot" Alas the world is filled with them these days.
I haven't bought Avernum 6 yet but the new graphics look sexy (at least by Spiderweb standards), although it's kind of funny that he's STILL using the same character portraits from way-back in the first game.
@BloodPigggy Haven't bought A6 either (though I've felt tempted many times). Still need to find some time to back to A5 (which I really liked) and finish that one first, I guess. Also, from what I've seen I'm perversely attracted to Avernum 3 for some reason, despite the older game engine and no doubt clunkier gameplay.
But, hey, if he's been using those rather ugly character portraits since the first game they should qualify as "retro" by now, right? Or "old school", at the very least...
@ddragon33 Bad investment choice. Avernum 6 lasts a lot longer than any drugs or prostitutes (or so I would guess). And unlike those aforementioned pastimes, Spiderweb's game also has the distinct advantage of being legal in most countries...
Hey every1, just foud a great website with huge file collection (PC And MAC) Just google For Aries-Films and u will find it. You can also watch youtube video in my channel and see how many great programs they got
Avernum is my favorite series of all time. I started playing Avernum 1 when I was 16 (14 years ago) and it's basically the only game I will buy continuously. right now I only have 1-4 (budget issues). Avernum 1 basically taught me how to type. Aside from buying and selling, I never used the mouse at all. I still play the original from time to time. Geneforge is good too, but it get's too difficult for me. (idiot, lol)
Sad to say that you are right. Though some of the best games I have played have been from indi developers. Look at Uplink, Magicka, Amnesia and so on. But for every good game there are at least 20 bad ones beating down your door :D
Better yet, there's a nice little option called Buy The Game, which lets you help the game's hard-working developer Jeff Vogel put food on his table and give his daughters the education they deserve. How awesome is that?

Geneforge is good too, but it get's too difficult for me. (idiot, lol)

Go buy the game for gods sake. At the least, go download the demo. Support indi gamers and help them out.
Bloody hell.

@Armatige Yes, but whatever you do, pirate the hell out of EA and Blizzard because they make too much money.

@Armatige I must say it's one of the very rare indi game that is actually WORTH buying.
