Well, like Scott mentioned, it's supposed to imitate the motion of the machine, so I think what you're supposed to do is work out like you're on the machine... in other words, when you pull back, squeeze the rear delts. It's not as effective because the resistance is vertical instead of horizontal, but it does help. Or easily... just bend forward lol

The machine you're imitating works the rear delts by using pulleys to have that backwards pulling motion pulling up a weight stack. There's no backwards resistance when you use dumbbells. Lean forward, then gravity will give you similar resistance to what the machine offers.
the only thing you're working here is your front and side delt, staticly (or what you call it). there are no contraction and stretching on any muscles here, which is key if you want to build muscles.
Hey while you're at it why don't you do do upside down pull-ups where you pull your body down to the ground. Or maybe a standing dumbbell press while you push the dumbbells in front of you.
the lifting muscle here is the side delt and front delt, the rear delt jus moves the weight backwards without ressistance, bands might work like that...
@ralphM1114 that's technically true, but you're still only overcoming the inertia of the weights. Think of it this way: As soon as Scott here has gone through 20% of his range of motion, the resistance is already gone, and then you're working your chest to slow the weights down (or just wrenching your shoulders). Regardless of speed, this is a bad way to work your rear delts, and actually a pretty decent way to get an injury.
If 353,035 people haven't noticed yet, he was doing fairly fast reps, which puts a lot of stress on the rear delts. With fast reps, gravity doesn't matter. The direction of the movement relative to the torso does. This movement is a good exercise for the rear deltoids IF done fast.
As with most your videos, Scott, you missed the mark here. Watch your own video, and you can see your traps and lateral deltoids firing; not your posterior delts. You do get a lot of YouTube views though. I give you props for that. Take care.
Try it, find out if it makes your shoulders feel like shit (which I honestly suspect it might) or whether it actually works for you, then leave it at that. I only suggest Scott that you do thorough research for several body types when demonstrating important exercises for posture and shoulder/back health and the like. Weird variations CAN be beneficial, but they CAN ALSO hurt people..
I gotta agree though this exercise in my opinion probably would work side delts more and top of delts rather than rear and u may even feel it in biceps from just tension of holding up something... i rather do this with cables and actually hit the rear delts :-/

this is actually more middle back not trying to hate but the motion of the rear delt is to go back so imagine a dumbell front raise for thefront delt but going backwards . i dont see how the motion of the rear delt involves your arms starting at a raised position . this exercise focuses on rhomboids qute a bit and does some trap work . probably 5 percent of this motion involves the rear delt thaT 5 % is where your arms are inline with your body and u go back that half an inch
Basic physics says that this exercise works the front deltoid more than the rear.
If you really want this exercise to work correctly find a tall bench that allows for arm clearance lay face down on it and then perform the exercise, or just do bent over laterals in a chair. Either approach will put more load on the targeted rear deltoid muscle.

ive never done delt isolation and i can overhead press bodyweight for 5+ reps.
isolation and bodybuilding = faggotry

@Anarki23x overhead press barely uses rear deltoids. rear delts are used in rowing motions and to stabilise the shoulder joint.

Too bad Scott enabled "friend lock". I tried to send him a message to remove this video. Clearly, he's not reading the comments for this video, or he would have removed it long ago. If this exercise were done bent over, or on a flat bench, it would target the rear delts. Done this way, it does nothing of the sort. Scott's worst video so far.

terrible exercise, when you try and up the weight there will be way to much pressure on the hands and the arms, you will have to lower the weight back down, but then you can't give the back a proper workout.

did you put this shit on here to see how many negative comments you could get? the only force your rear delts are overcoming is the initial inertia of the weights. Then at the end of the movement your body needs to stop the weights, and this stopping I imagine could maybe injure you.

this is actually more middle back not trying to hate but the motion of the rear delt is to go back so imagine a dumbell front raise for thefront delt but going backwards . i dont see how the motion of the rear delt involves your arms starting at a raised position . this exercise focuses on rhomboids qute a bit and does some trap work . probably 5 percent of this motion involves the rear delt thaT 5 % is where your arms are inline with your body and u go back that half an inch

Basic physics says that this exercise works the front deltoid more than the rear.
If you really want this exercise to work correctly find a tall bench that allows for arm clearance lay face down on it and then perform the exercise, or just do bent over laterals in a chair. Either approach will put more load on the targeted rear deltoid muscle.
