Okay, i never saw this movie, but my mom talked about it once. Here in the North of England, ice cream trucks usually offer a red syrup over icecream known locally as Monkeys blood. My mom said her and her sisters watched this movie once, and when the kid got shot, my auntie said "But i didn't ask for monkeys blood on it!" in a kids voice.
What is ironic is that a scene like this was almost unimaginable back when this movie was made, but today is very much reality! When I first saw this movie back in the 70's it was the first time I ever saw a kid get killed on screen and I never heard of a kid getting shot in real life either, that was what made the scene horrifying, but today a scene like this would be no big deal for kids.
@JENDALL714 True..its as if Carpenter was a little ahead of his time with this. In the dvd commentary, he says that he wouldn't do a scene like this today. That in itself, is a sad commentary about the world we live in.
That scene looks so fake. I thought she was just sprayed with some red paint instead of actually shot. Was kind of a relief actually, like it was supposed to have been some kind of joke played by the gang, that they're actually harmless. I only realized a couple seconds later that, oh, I guess she really was shot.
@Cappacino1000 It was risky to brutally murder a child in a movie back then(was probably the first) so i think a headshot would have been too much and be cut. Awesome movie and still the creepiest soundtrack('cept maybe the original Amityville Horror)
the girl getting shot was very comical but i think the best part of the movie is when the dad steps out of the phone booth and just stares at the dead bodies with the most dumbass look on his face like a "you gotta be shittin me" kind of look, haha priceless...
the girls destiny makes me sad but fortunately his dad kills the gang member that shot her. Thing is, the girl actually dies before hitting the sidewalk. Thats why she doenst shout or scream. Could any1 post the whole film plz
Could it be that John Carpenter hated kids back then; and that this was part of a contribution to destroying the nuclear family in the modern world?!!!
@grumpypant it could very well be, as both the grown woman and the alcoholic vagrant gets off without even a warning. But having a job and money to pay with is a no go.
The cultural revolution(marxism/maoism/leninisn/relativism) is a part of anything from that period. Just look at "Superman"/"Batman"/"Wonderwoman".
Had cel phones existed back in those 70s days, that girl's tragedy wouldn't happened...'cause her dad could have made that call while on the freeways somewhere...She would have been about 45 years old with now with grad kids by now!!!
yeah, the movie was threatened with an X rating unless if that shot was edited out.
But JC tricked them. He took it out for the raitings guys and when the movie was given it's R rating, Carpenter had the version with the original scene distrbuted.
c'mon man, she was a kid. kids are always a pain in the ass. i think back to my childhood and i can honestly say that if i had to deal with myself, i would find myself to be an asshole.
