I don't agree with the test just 100% useless. They steering the BMW and Audi wheel right and left with speed initialyy to go all the top of the hill, but they didn't push Lexus and nissan so hard on the hill. THAT JUST TO promote AUDI SALES:) IF YOU GIVE ME CAR I WOULD HAVE PUSHED THE NISSAN or LEXUS ON TOP. It totally depend on the driver skills how they can go UP and curve the car to its best way.

The Driver STOPS the Nissan Patrol while rolling! This test is ridiculous! In german tests (tv, magazines...) german cars mostly win against foreign ones. it's just what Germans want to see and what sells cars, so most germans don't even realize how unrealistic some tests are. e.g. why do they compare sedans, station wagons and suvs in one test? and why don't they mention the price of the cars? for most people that would be an important criterion...

Take a Subaru Outback ! He won the Autobild Allrad test, with the best 4WD system against X3 and Audi Q7 3.0 TDI. And all on the Same tires. And the Q7 system is better than the one from the A6 allroad.

I don't believe for a minute, that the Mitsubishi 4x4 stopped where it did - It has low range and diff lock!!! something none of the others have. My missus drives an A4 quattro; it's pretty good but I've had to pull it out 4 times this year so far in my Pathfinder, because of all the snow in the northeast.

ponsculey - really? you have to tow the A4? Is it in on bald summer tires. I've driven around in all the NY snowstorms in a A4 on 18" all-seasons and the car has only even slipped twice (traction control came on) twice. It's never gotten close to getting stuck!! SUV's can be good off-road but not necessarily in snow. The SUV I formerly drove would slide around and in trace snow the traction control would come on.

tires are all that matters, put a FWD with snow tires up with an AWD with all season tires and it will out accelerate and out brake it.

they should have another test with newer technologies like Acura SH-AWD, Bmw's new x-drive, and all the other competitors which have improved their systems over the years.

to your first statement... this is true about FWD being better than AWD with proper tires... but if you put the same tires on AWD it would surpass the FWD car by far

I would like to see a newer comparison of the awd systems, but in the end, wether its the best or not, audis quattro is still very good

It looked like the driver wasn't really trying on all the cars except in the Audi.

The BMW X5 could have made it, it's just that maybe they were using a 3.0si instead of a 4.8i and 90 horsepower added along with more torque than horsepower on the 4.8i, that can really make a difference.

Some of them hit the breaks because that is how they engage the differential to distribute power... it simulates traction on tires with no grip and keeps all four tires turning

this test didn't look fare. Some cars picked up more speed at the bottom of the hill than others - for example the 1st car, BMW sedan, started very slow, quickly lost momentum and stuck.

Mmm, don't be so sure. The viscous limited slip differentials used by many work well. Overall, though, the best AWD CARS are still Audi and Subaru.
