  • wtf it can't play 5200 games?????

  • Most of these games are on Commodore 64 or Atari 800XL computers, so get one of those! You can play games like Choplifter, Ballblazer, and Impossible Mission, plus other games you can't do on a console, like Ultima, Zork, Seven Cities Of Gold, Archon, Lode Runner, and Boulder Dash!

  • i watch this in 2012 !

  • It's 4:30 am, I was just frightened from my slumber with the most nightmare-ish concoction of a dream involving being swarmed by waves of mutant undeveloped humans. Another hour or so of Mark's soothing commentary should allow me to fall asleep.

No I do not do drugs.

  • I need to get one of these soon, I've been in the mood for retro gaming these days.

  • @lordrath2000 really only get one of these if you don't have a 2600 already. The 7800 is one of the biggest pieces of crap you will ever play.

  • @BrutallyHonestGamer

I assume it's because of the crappy controller?

  • @lordrath2000 I had 7800 as a kid, and it was crap, and as a collector now 20+ years later, it's even worse than I remember. The controller never bothered me, it's the games. There are not many exclusives, they are mostly rehashes not much better than the 2600 or 5200 version. The games they have that are unique are bad, they look and sound like crap, NES and Master System are waaaaayyy superior systems, 7800 could not compete at all, terrible system, terrible Atari mistake

  • @BrutallyHonestGamer

    Well I don't have a 2600, so I'll compare prices between 2600 and 7800.

  • @lordrath2000 7800's are typically pricer because of the rarity, there were less made. Since you don't have a 2600, it may be worth it to you to get a 7800, if you are new to collecting and want to start collecting and chances are you'll eventually get one anyhow, then go for it, just don't expect much out of the 7800 games. If you go at it with the knowledge that the games are far inferior to everything else at that time, you won't be disappointed

  • @BrutallyHonestGamer

Thanks so much for the advice. I was intending to get a 7800 for mostly just the 2600 games and slightly cleaner look (in my opinion), with the option for 7800 games available anyway.

  • I thought it was also 5200 compatiable ?

  • Comment removed

  • pure classic :)

  • would i buy a piece of crap ps4 or xbox720 that has cool graphics, costs $800, games cost $80, is big as fuck, has upcoming CoD games, and lasts half a year, just to be accepted by society? fuck no...

  • @SagradaMascarita then buy a wii !¬!!

  • @epicsmurfyzz no shit

  • @SagradaMascarita hipsters are fucking idiots.

  • The bottom of the ocean? LOL You mean the bottom of the bay? I live below the bay (San Jose). I know Atari had an office in Sunnyvale, which is near by.

  • Can it play 5200

  • @xJACOBYORKx Unfortunately, no. 5200 carts are way bigger than 7800 and 2600 carts.

  • yes

  • i see the controller just move at 0.27...... did everyone see that???

  • This man needs to move on!!

  • Did you get your free T shirt yet?

  • Ok what should I get either a 7800,nes,snes,or a dreamcast?

  • @naruto181800 SNES. Immediately.

  • hmmm, my SNES is as old as i am, and it still works like a charm :P

  • Oh yeah ! Atari Pro ! Pro - FAIL !

  • Mr. AVGN do this system next

  • my ps2 is 11 years old and works

  • Is that the new model with 100 cores and 9D holographic technology.... I'm so jealous

  • You have a copy of WaterWorld? Lucky bastard.

  • Hey This was my fist game consle! it came pre programmed with like 50 games!

  • @ 2:45 As if i never knew how to insert a cartridge. -_-

  • I still have mine & it still works! I had it since Dec 25, 1987. (Yes, GREAT Christmas Present from my uncle)! :-) I was just playing space invaders a few minutes ago.

  • its actually more powerful than the nes and master system

  • Comment removed

  • @deadlygroove1 The 7800 is more powerful than the sucky NES and Master System, idiot. The 7800's has a powerful graphics chip that can display 75-100 sprites onscreen (no flickering) and a very large palette of colors. I'll bet you've never seen a game for this great system. I actually happen to be the proud owner of an Atari 7800, and I think it is the greatest video game console ever made. The NES and Master System can drink the 7800's piss.

  • @thecomputerwhiz1 I actually own a 7800 and have had it since 1987. The fact that you have to resort to name calling shows your age and level of maturity. It's a shame that there are so many people on youtube that can't just have a discussion without having to resort to name calling.

  • @deadlygroove1 If you own a 7800, then why do you criticize it? I thought people were proud of the things they owned, and would argue against those who own something that competes against that thing. And many adults are immature and call others names, especially on Youtube, where "troll wars" are endless. And I am actually more mature than most people my age (teens). While other brats my age play modern games, I take pride in playing better games, Atari games. LONG LIVE ATARI!

  • @thecomputerwhiz1 because there's always 2 sides to a coin. While I am passionate about my Atari consoles and games, I also have criticisms about them as well. There's nothing wrong with that. You could have a game that is your favorite game but you can still find something about it that could be improved on. I don't hate the 7800, I love it and I still buy games for it on Atari Age and some other games that aren't in my collection.

  • @thecomputerwhiz1 and if you don't already know, check out AtariAge, they have some games that are still being made for the 7800 like Pacman Collection, Beef Drop and Space Invaders. Cool site!

  • @deadlygroove1 I've been there many times. And on the topic of homebrew, I'm an aspiring programmer for the 7800, and am hoping to make some games for it.

  • @thecomputerwhiz1 if you do, I'll check them out. The one thing I love is that there are still people making games for the 7800, 2600 and the 5200. I hope that people will always keep Atari consoles alive because there's something special about Atari. For me, it's the nostalgic feeling from the 80s but thank goodness for home brew games. Maybe one day I might get into making some home brew games but I would have to learn how to program Atari 7800 games.

  • drinking dr pepper 10 and eating hot cheetos while watching this best decision i made today

  • @noahparedes1 HOT cheetos?

  • @noahparedes1 i am drinking dr pepper

  • Why did the 5200 have a real sound chip and the 7800 not?

  • @esathegreat They wanted to make it 100% compatiable with 2600, so they used one from 2600. 5200 had POKEY, which was also in Atari 8-bit computers.

  • Can you also play the 5200 games on the 7800, or is it only backwards compatible with 2600 games?

  • @fireheartis1 I've looked online, and no, only 2600 sadly.

  • I GOT A 7800, but it messed up... but luckily it was fixable. :)

  • i am a old game system collecter and i dont even like the looks of this damn thing XD

  • @nathan3227,

Dooode! You'd think Atari 7800 was the shit if you lived in the 80's, even next to the Nintendo.

  • @nathan3227 i like the super nintinto and nintindo 64 and almost everything made after those even some systems made b4 just not this piece of shit

  • show us gameplay...

  • Wow man, you got Waterworld?! Did you sell your soul or something?

  • @cloob1 He got it back at the time of the video game crash when all Atari games were completely worthless. When people realized it was rare, it went up in value later on after he bought it.

  • I am an expert and I chose the Atari 7800.

  • i would take atari 7800 over ps3 or x360 elite

-p.s. elite overheats too much! i regret buying it

  • @pacmanfan1214 why would you buy an elite when the slim has been out for like a year now?

and P.S. You need to isolate your xbox from anything else so it doesnt overheat.

Slim's dont overheat unless you block off the fan

  • i dont give a fuck what cloud gaming is!!!

  • @exposed97 I FUCKING HATE THOSE THINGS. THEY'RE SHIT.

  • Oops...I guess it was the 7800 that I had...

  • Looks EXACTLY like my old Atari 5200...with the same box art...Lol...oh the memories!

  • too bad no one could see the awesomeness of this because of the NES and SEGA master system

  • that game catalog looks like the app store :))

  • I didn't really want to see this video, but I saw you made it, and so I clicked just so I could like.

  • 5:00 That resembles an Atari 65XE (the one with the keyboard). I used to have it. Oh, man! The hours I spent playing with it. Even my parents played games on it like Jungle Hunt or Super Pacman.

  • "It still works more than 22 years later".

Newer consoles last only 5 to 8 years.

Xbox 360 will last you little

  • @playstationgamer05 by little you mean 1-3 years yes?

  • @playstationgamer05 no playstions if you tip it your memory is lost plus you can get the red ring of death fixed

    at game stop

  • @playstationgamer05 thats because the 80's ruled and those other companies only want ur money

  • @playstationgamer05 I beg to differ I have a 360 pro its from 2005 hasnt broke once and hasnt had to fixed or sent back in

  • @playstationgamer05 not true i own a 360 and can tell u this: most "failures" of the 360 actually arent failures at all they are mainly power failures, due to some fucktard unplugging the power cable. Red ring of death is actually, shockingly an audio/video cable/ plug failure, not a console failure. The only console failure is the one red light, which is extremely rare. 1 ring- console failure 2- overheat/ 2 much dust 3 power cable failure 4- a/v failure

  • @OrangeBreaker Doesn't matter. Failure = Failure. I've had the red rings 3 times already on xbox 360 and yellow light of death twice on ps3. It's a shame. My old atari still works. My NES failed. Red Rings have to do with hardware failure...and not from the owner...just faulty systems. There was no excuse for that. They didn't put enough into their hardware...and that goes for PS3 too. I love both systems but they could've did better.

  • @playstationgamer05 My Playstation (original model) still works 14 years later and so does my PS2 (original model) 8 years later.

  • @playstationgamer05 what about a pc

  • DID I DO GOOD. I BOUGHT AN ATARI 7800 FOR 60$ WITH THE ORIGINAL BOX 3 CATALOGS AND A FEW MANUALS AND A FEW GAMES. WAS THAT A GOOD PURCHASE? 4 CONTROLLERS AS WELL AND A FREE RCA TO COAX

  • @knuxking Yes, very. I just bought an atari 2600 with 14 games, plus a mint nes with 3 controllers. a ps1 with 3 cont. and 2 pong paddles for atari and a seperate atari super pong for $75.

  • I'm sure this has been said before, but I don't wanna look through 724 comments. The Atari 7800 was not canceled by the game crash (not directly). Time-Warner was getting weighed down by Atari in 1984, so they sold the company to Jack Tramiel, founder of Commodore computers. He wanted to focus on Atari's line of computers, as those were his forte. Little did he know, the NES was coming. When it came, he had to compete in the home console market. So to be stingy, he finally launched the 7800!

  • Ugh, I'm kicking myself right now. Got a boxload of good condition 7800/2600 cartridges, and what seemed to be a good 7800. But the seller didn't inform us that the power cord had been chewed into... Now I'm worried I may have fried the system. :(

  • 4:37 OMG A BLUE WEEGEE!!! RUN!!!!

  • I won the trip to California

  • This should have been the 5200. Atari made so many dumb mistakes.

  • @wildbilltexas To be specific, Time-Warner Atari made so many dumb mistakes. Noel Bushnell's Atari is the one we all know and love.

  • Why is Dig-Dug labeled under "Sports"?

  • I am a classic gamer because You have an expansive library of games. atari 2600-nintendo 64, during that time, there were hundreds of thousands of games too choose.

  • mark why would you want 2 win a trip to california? don't you live in california? anyway, that's still a pretty cool contest! i hope you win!

thumbs up this comment if you want mark 2 win the atari 7800 advantage contest!

  • Most older games were infamous for difficulty (thus the phrase "Nintendo Hard"), in order to stretch the replay value of a game, this was done in arcades for the same reason. Nowadays you get a standing ovation just for starting the game...with no emphasis on local multilayer (Thus why the WII and games like Smash Bros are outselling EVERYTHING)

  • Hey guys im 17 years old and im an old shcool gamer (i dont really like newer consoles because its just grafix and grafix) should i get the atari 7800 and the nes? thnx

  • @kaoman720

try some emulators, and pick the consoles from the best games you played

  • @frozenkiller7 so you mean i have to try the consoles from emulators right? i dont realy like emulators but ill try it out and if there are games that i like, ill buy them :D (sorry for bad english im canadian)

  • @kaoman720 I dont know much about the atari 7800. But i grow up with the nes and i had alot of fun with most of the games i had. They are extremely hard though like castlevania and shadow warrior. So you will need some patience with the games! give it a try!

  • @Totte333 thats why i love older games because of the difficulty. Newer games are just some times too easy and its just grafix over grafix. Im 17 years old too and an oldschool gamer. Classic games will never ever gets old!!! :D

  • lol, ballblazer...

  • why are game systems different in different countries? next thing you know a mexican nintendo 3ds even has a 1d option!

  • have you a snes advantig?

  • holy shit you own waterworld??????/

  • wheres the controller port!!??

  • @exposed97 yes they do!!!!! look up The gaming source southington ct

  • Damn you Mark, you planted the Atari seed in my brain... My 7800 has just arrived =)

  • on an unrelated note, i just realized how hard it is to tear myself away from the ending of portal 2

  • IF You Press 4 In A Rythem It Sounds LIke Rythem Its Self

  • You and James Rolfe are my favorite video game reviewers .

Mark you are awesome reviewing so many games and consoles that I already lost count.

  • que vacanooo yo tuve el atari 2600, ese no lo habia visto nunca =)

  • Maybe you can send the coupon for the t-shirt through time or something and then when they receive it they can send it to you back here in 2011

  • do you use an older analog tv to play your RF systems or use an RCA Phono Plug to F Jack adapter?

  • got a 7800 and a 2600 8 7800 games 4 controllers all the hookups 10 bucks

  • @TheHellsangel63 i'm interested

  • @Atari2600Gamer oh sorry man im not selling it thats what i picked it up for ill sub to you if i can get a cheap one you can have it for around 10 i feel bad now

  • ive had the 5200 forever, and it just recently died... what a morbidly obese hunk that thing was... still cool to talk about tho.

  • Pole Position 2 sounds naughty

  • @MrKiddSplash22 so does ball blazer

  • I love you dude, your reviews rock

  • i got mine for $35 and its awsome

  • naw m8 the ps3 is oot and the xbox get tht u panzii

  • Comment removed

  • @minielk454 and what kind of fuckin comeback was tht then?

  • @a2000keegans atari 7800 ftw man. you can keep your xbox's and playstation's and watch them break in 3 years, and the atari's and nintendo's will live on.

  • @minielk454 umm... These things are on the edge of breaking...

  • @a2000keegans you dont know shit man.

  • WHY CANT GAMES BE CARTRIDGES ANY MORE!!!??

  • @toot1231 bye a ds it has mini cartridges or buy and old game boy for classical sized cartridges

  • LMFAO AT 5:23

  • press 9 it's like lembalembalemba

  • When I was little I was really into how the graphics looked so I always liked the Master System better than the Nes and the 7800, but now I think that the 7800 is the funnest system of them all, and some of the arcade classics on the 7800 to me are very impressive in graphics, and for them to be impressive with the boss man doing things so cheap, you have to wonder if the 7800 was in different hands. This could have been the better 8 bit system, sales wise. Viva la 7800!!

  • Old School!

  • do you know what rule i found in my nes manual? "do not drink, Eat, throw up while playing your nintendo." drink and eal ok but throw up? lol

  • heh_ï_fÊÉl_sÔ_lÕÑëlý_tödÅY

  • Yay! I finally got a 7800 on eBay along with "Donkey Kong", "Donkey Kong Jr", the leads, two of the euro-type NES-style gamepads and a 2600 Stick. I am so excited, I could explode into a bunch of frogs who cannot swim.

  • This is what the Atari 5200 should've been like! A decent joystick and compatible with the 2600. If you're a collector then get the 7800 - it rocks!

  • The Atari 7800 is the greatest console ever made.

  • bcuz ur stupid!

  • The Game/TV switch really brings back memories!

  • I just bought the Atari Advantage poster off eBay for about $2.

  • At 6:12, if you look closely, there's a section that says, "Get a FREE Atari game cartridge when you collect 15 game cartridges." LOL

  • 7800 is still really the best choice period.

2600 jr is...but the games suck 7800 games pretty much in the same 8-bit era as the master system and NES, being an 8-bit machine as the rest of its coompets were.

if u want to do some atari arcade gaming, 7800 it is!

  • Ha, That reminds me of when I chose a Sega Saturn over a Playstation. I was loyal to Sega. I figured hey...its Sega. What does Sony know about video games. Little did I know. Eventually I realized, maybe I made a mistake. Great review, the 2600, 5200, 7800 stuff always confused me so I can watch your videos and understand it more now.

  • yes love games, atari forever.

  • I don't buy anything past the 16 bit era...... Except a nes emulator for dreamcast

  • lol i bet this dude is spewing getting an atari.

my fist system was a sega master system :)

  • Today i have got my ATARI 7800 and it looks like brand new.

No scratches on the console and it still has it`s protective plastic on the metal strip!

Even the joypads look they have never been used.

  • Simply awesome. Ive still my 7800 prosystem, just got her re-working after a flood filled her with muck. These were tough old machines. Glad to see someone else realizes that these are a piece of history/keeps them working.

  • in soviet russia you dont play atari but atari PLAYS you

  • @Mr8125917 In Soviet Russia, E.T. is fucking GREAT.

  • i wanna see him mail this in and their like wtf is this

  • FYI, if your Sega Genesis controller works with any other system, like the Atari 2600 and 7800 or the ColecoVison, you can also use the Sega Master controller as well. The Master has the same connection head as the Genesis. I know, I used my Genesis controller on my Master system all the time and I use my Master controller on my Atari for variety. By the way, is it just me, or does the Atari gun in the poster look like a German Luger?

  • Classic Game Room 4ever

  • Just got one off of eBay for $70. Score. :D

  • @MarioWars That's how much I bought it new on my 13th birthday in 1987, still works

  • There's a new store that opened in town called Dragonvine and they sell Atari 2600 and 7800 games in the shrink wrap. 8|

  • i did something similar, while my friends where getting xbox 360s, i got a ps3, i started to think it was a mistake but didnt after 2 of my friends xboxs broke.

  • @happymexicanguy15 HAHA... and you were likes 'Who made the mistake now??' I'm one of the lucky few who's xbox 360 never broke... ^.^

  • no one would happen to have a spare plug for this they would be willing to sell or give away would they?

  • i like how he shows off his rare copy of swordquest water world

  • @M3rtyville No, I think they have a different shape.. It's like they wanted to forget about 5200 ever happening :P

  • It plays 2600 and 7800 games? How about 5200? Not like I want them I am just wondering

  • A system doesn't play, a person does...

    That information booklet isn't literature,

and why is my channel select on your atari? :P

  • why does atari always have those shitty controllers.... they couldnt ruin the 2600 but the others suck!
