i used to live there , theirs nothing wrong with red road , yeah there may be junkies and that there , you get that EVERYWHERE not just in red road .. its kind of offensive when you think of saying all the junkies live in red road when they are everywhere :/
It was not the place where all the junkies go, I lived there 15 years ago, ok I saw junkies but there were some respectable people there too, you get people like Junkies almost everywhere not necessary just the red road flats, I had great neughbours when I lived there, very sociable and helpful, clean respectable, but they were not junkies, one of them even helped fit my living room carpet, great people.
@heythanksbutnothanks, appreciate your comment thanx, but sadly, this is where all the junkies go now. maybe not 15 years ago, but for the hour i was there, i experienced many alcohlics and junkies and was almost swimming in used syringes, empty bottles, used sanitary towels and other filth. no one else to blame apart from the government for allowing it. im fully aware many people share many happy memories about this place, and i dont doubt that for a minute... but those days are long gone
@vix2501 I will miss them in the Glasgow Skyline, and I really did have a happy live living there, I think that is why I feel so sad as I had so many happy memorable times there. I totally agree with you though about the government, they should have kept on top of it, they just let it go, but possibly because they maybe knew in advance that eventually they were going to take them down.
I remember there was a housing office round the corner where the wee shops were, that looks pretty run down now and I reckon that has not been a housing office for years now. I taken a trip up there recently and I did get a shock even how round that way had went to wreck and ruin, they used to be quite nice flats, a lot nicer than the Kingsway flats in their time.
Now I understand why such a high proportion of the Troopers in the British 22 Special Air Service are Glasweigan...they are the toughest people on earth! Appreciate the vid vix250i. Best wishes. Ebs
@Ebsteins31653 How do you know the highest proportion are Glasweigan? The SAS are a secret regiment you muppet! There are tough people in every town & city just as there are weak people. Glasgow is no different from Detroit, Berlin, Rio, Leeds, Oslo, Belgrade or Cardiff. Grow up man!
@whitbyjet65 Well, it really is very simple! I was born in Glasgow's East End within a proud 'military' family; and statistics are statistics. 22 Regiment' is of course a secretive, but that depends upon where one is in relation to the Hereford (Credenhill) family...exceedingly tight and cohesive. Believe me whitbyjet65, the ration of Troopers in 22 from a Glasweigan/Scots genesis, is significantly in favour of this Northern Nation. And I am grown up about it all...
@Ebsteins31653 Unfortunately I don't believe you because I don't base my statistics on hear say from someone just 'bigging up' their own town. Hand me the official evidence & I'll happily admit you're right but until then I'll just smile & ignore you.
@whitbyjet65 Then just continue smiling and ignore me! Did you have aspirations for 22 Regiment and failed? Not used to being cold, too hot, hungry, knackered, stressed, tabbing for days with an enormous shoulder-bourne weight et al? Do you seriously think that I'd hand over statistal genesis files to some civilian. I am NOT a Trooper. But a proud son of...well...its above you're pay grade to know. Goodbye! You can always try for the Scouts or do a local Paper run...
no, your accent is scottish. you speak english. scottish language is gaelic and pictish.....i bet you know not one word of either. i simply dont segregate myself into glasweigen snobbery. and im educated.
no, but i can understand some of it written down. sorry but you have to work out how to puncuate properly. primary school doesnt count as being educated! your grammer is appalling too...... byebye, im sure you have a big rant your building up but i cant be arsed. got better things to do than desipher ned speak.....like watching paint dry.
I do agree partly with lezeleze1; it's the people as well who can make a neighbourhood into Hells Kitchen! The government can put millions of pounds in regenerating the area but when the people don't want to change their way of life it will be a mess in no-time....again!
but they do. and theyre all scattered now. when you get that level of degradation people give up. dont think youll meet one person who lived there who didnt want to make it a nicer place.
I must say there's something in the words you said about this rough environment...what's worth the effort when you live on this level of degredation.
But....no matter how shitty the place is > you have to live with the facts and simply make something of it. When enough people think that way there's still a chance :-)
it was mainly boredom that caused it. high unemployment and nothing to do....no clubs, shops or places to go. people squashed in like sardines and lots of unrest. the spirit of the place (and the people) was crushed.....why bother doing a place up when you cant even feed your family?
its great your so optimistic but you obviously have never had to live in a place like that.....should think yourself lucky and try not to judge!
Not to mention and admit that those places like Red Road and other rough areas with towerblocks like these are a disgrace for humanity. They shouldn't have been built. People should have a decent housing; at least enough place for themselves and the family and certainly NOT in towerblocks up to 40 floors!
You're full of shit. The areas are not rough because the buildings are tall, other social factors have the result of turning them bad. Blaming the building is just cheap and stupid. Some towers work well. Just look at how many low-rise areas with single family houses that are slummed. Typical Dutch city-planning ignorance.
yeah, i know.... youtube removed my video for copywrite reasons and put up back up with the gayest song they could find! its totally ruined my video :( gonna remake it and replace it!
i grew up in Barmulloch, the area highlighted on 52 seconds is were we used to go and drink our wine to hide from the police, im now 28 and have left Barmulloch, its not til u leave u realise how bad the area is, im now settled with a family and would NEVER go back, the thought of my daughter doing the stuff i got up 2 back in Barmulloch terrifies me, ive got alot of good memories its not all doom and gloom, but my advice is if uv got kids is GET OUT!!!!,
one of my mates got shot in the ankle there by a guy fireing his gun out the window becasue he was high I say the sooner they are ripped down the better and leave the neds in there when its done
I like the red road flats but fairs fair and they should be givin to our own british born people first!... ok if there are empty flats avliable after the homeless r givin the chance to move there then fine but dnt take the piss and look after all the asylum seekers 1st!..... hope they dont knock them down, there distinctive and different!
video probably posted by some dafty student that got terrorised there and its the only way tae get thier ain back , away tae fuck ya bufter mon down and shout yer gubb aff and get it took right aff ye ya banger !!
A monument to remind us of the fact that we are willing to put refugees, immigrant workers and asylum seekers in that one place where they are so much more likely to have a low quality of life. I think it should be retained in the way that Auchwitz was - lest we forget the way we have treated those people most in need.
What do you suggest? we give them a nice big front and back door? flats like this are luxury compared to the places these people have came from, they dont complain about them, they are greatful .. stop being such a whiney twat.
i agree lennerbot, some people just dont have any compassion. what a disgrace to our city these buildings are. and its always great to see the uncaring, primal racists coming out in style eh.
Actually, those places are certainly no better than the Eastern European communist-era apartment blocks that many of the asylum seekers from Eastern Europe would have lived in back in their own country.
Our government will give reasonable flats to petty criminals and drug addicts on housing benefits with no jobs, but will give far worse slums to asylum seekers and refugees. A prime example of the government putting its own citizens before foreigners, no matter who they are.
Well, the style of the BUILDINGS in Eastern Europe was the same at the beginning, however I can honestly say, that I've never seen blocks of flats as ugly as that until I came to Glasgow.
Loads of people live in high flats in our country and it's a perfectly acceptable way of living! The blocks are undergoing regeneration (for which the people mostly pay themselves of course) and buying a flat in these blocks is almost as expensive as buying a flat anywhere else.
Before I came to Glasgow I was thinking of hiring a small flat in one of them... well I only had to see the Gallowgate ones and the Gorbals ones from a distance and I immediately changed my mind. They were sooo ugly.
It's not the buildings, it's the people and honestly, I don't understand the idea that is behind the demolition of these places in Glasgow. I mean OK, you demolish the places and then what? The neds won't just disappear (unless you demolish the buildings with the neds inside which I don't think is a part of the plan). So what will happen to those people? (You don't think that things will get better when you move them into brand new accommodation, do you?)
does anyone with a job/car/money etc ACTUALLY live there?or is it all chavscum n junkies, what a dump, shame for any decent folk who have to live there!
Mostly all immigrants and poor people live in them.. they are supposed to be coming down within the next few years, mainly because they were poorly built and maintained, asbestos etc .. i have worked in them a couple of times .. the view from them is amazing lol oh well
they were badly designed, sam bunton(architect)designed them and they were thrown up without any forethought to the problems ,so now are a dumping ground, did the ymca not take 1 block over for students at one time?
Yeah one of the wide ones was but they then declared it unfit for students and refugees to live in .. this is gonna be the first one to come down. there is loads of tower blocks and estates all over Glasgow on the same boat, there is alot of regeneration happening.
i used to live there , theirs nothing wrong with red road , yeah there may be junkies and that there , you get that EVERYWHERE not just in red road .. its kind of offensive when you think of saying all the junkies live in red road when they are everywhere :/

Not only TALL, but also NARROW! Almost hard to believe that such towers could withstand high winds.

@LOGINKPW Wider towers suffer more in strong winds because there's a larger surface area for the wind to hit.
