There is a way around steam try useing lime O it does away with haveing steam in the background except on valve games they have to have steam for online but lime O will run them if you just want offline.

Steam Robbed me. I buy a steam powered game from store, install everything but HD died. I get new HD, try and reinstall game and get told it's already activated on another system so I can't install, 3 times, 3 different games, 3 similar things and I'm screwed, can't activate the game I paid for. Steam support basically said, TOUGH, if you want to play game, buy it again. This and MS Games Live, why are my single play saves on THEIR servers? That seems to void all agreements IMHO.
Why does Steam suck so bad? This is a mystery many gamers today are faced with. Why would anyone make a great game and then ruin it by forcing the users to download steam? I dislike Steam only because it does not have every games we want and also lack of features.
There is no quick launch or anything, the little icon on the right corner is useless. The chat mode suck, the interface is badly designed, the color is horrible, the sound, error messages too and many more.
I can use Xfire for the same thing, buying games and such. The only bad thing is the game detection. Sometimes it fail so you have to do it manually. Except that I find it way better than Steam.
@romadoner That problem is that when i go out and buy a retail game, i should be able to play it without installing gay ass steam. i should be able to play the game offline and not have to use the internet at all, unless i want a expansion pack. Steam has so many problems and is the reason why people pirate games!! Im pretty much stuck with a copy of new vegas and cant play it bc of steam.
If using 45MB out of 8GB and zero cpu time is a resource hog....well I wish a lot more programs were like that. If something that small lags your system i suggest you are in need of a serious upgrade because steam wasn't meant to be used on a 1Ghz Pentium D or a 2000ish AMD.

I just gave up on ever getting to play Civ5 because the Steam interface took nearly 24 hrs to download and then it wouldn't play on my PC. So I'm returning it to the store and sending Sid Meier a nastygram.
Not everybody can afford to get a decent internet connection, especially in countries with horrible caps and people buy retail when they can't get a good internet connection to legally download games but steam doesn't seem to give a fuck about these people.
What's amusing is how much they fail at preventing piracy, they used to really push the whole "We'll keep your game safe" scam to get people to use their service.
You spend your hard-earned money on a game and are excited to get home, install it, and enjoy... then you find out that in small print on the back of the box that Steam is required to play the damn thing, spend the next 3 fucking hours installing it and updating it because God forbid, you can't play a game without the fucking thing being updated through steam, then finally after updating it, you can't even join any of the damn servers... I hate this application with a passion!!!!!!!!!!

This is senseless, steam has to re-download the whole game when I want to change the language.
Then when I installed MW2 it downloaded the game, I mean, THE GAME IS IN THE CD, WHY DO YOU DOWNLOAD IT.
Now i cant install steam because when it updates it deletes steam.exe, and then, after copying Steam folder from another PC and installing MW2 again, it says that the game is currently unavailable.FUCK OFF STEAM

@m14g call of duty 4 is a great example with the new patch. and i know there is a whole list. if you google "games not compatible with steam" i grantee you, you will get a list.

Steam update required, begin update process...after many times trying and getting "Cannot update, try again later". I download new version and repair. Repair fails so I uninstall Steam and reinstall. COD MW2 vanished from my HD. Login to Steam account and MW2 not lised in available games list. Try reinstalling from DVD and key fails due to duplicate and a link that points me back to my available games on the website. I am now stuck in loop with no way re-install MW2. I HATE this software!!

Once, I've bought Modern Warfare 2 on a premiere date and it wasn't working because of current date error. Steam has banned by CD-key, because I was trying to change date manually ! I pay for a game, I get steam instead and I lose my game and money! This is how they threat someone who respects game publisher and buys orginal version in the strore.
Now I've bought Black Ops, and my new steam account pass is not woring and I'm waiting 2 days for this assholes to respond what's wrong.

I recently got Civ. 5 and it's nothing like in the demos for 2 reasons.
1: steam lags the f.ck out of it
2: I can only play the version without any animations and horrible graphics.

You spend your hard-earned money on a game and are excited to get home, install it, and enjoy... then you find out that in small print on the back of the box that Steam is required to play the damn thing, spend the next 3 fucking hours installing it and updating it because God forbid, you can't play a game without the fucking thing being updated through steam, then finally after updating it, you can't even join any of the damn servers... I hate this application with a passion!!!!!!!!!!

This is senseless, steam has to re-download the whole game when I want to change the language.
Then when I installed MW2 it downloaded the game, I mean, THE GAME IS IN THE CD, WHY DO YOU DOWNLOAD IT.
Now i cant install steam because when it updates it deletes steam.exe, and then, after copying Steam folder from another PC and installing MW2 again, it says that the game is currently unavailable.FUCK OFF STEAM

@deathsworn Hmm... That's interesting. But I'm just saying that you won't always be able to play a game so shortly after buying a game off of Steam. From a disk, a game installs much faster though considering how the files are right there on the disk and all you need to do is transfer them.

Steam update required, begin update process...after many times trying and getting "Cannot update, try again later". I download new version and repair. Repair fails so I uninstall Steam and reinstall. COD MW2 vanished from my HD. Login to Steam account and MW2 not lised in available games list. Try reinstalling from DVD and key fails due to duplicate and a link that points me back to my available games on the website. I am now stuck in loop with no way re-install MW2. I HATE this software!!
