Wow what a surprise....just great. don't understand the negativity about her not being in the same league as Ella....apples and oranges...you can like both
Last time I heard this song live was in the Roosevelt Hotel bar in L.A. in 1972. It certainly wasn't Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday but they were good enough for an enduring memory.
@ANBPyro It was sung by Hoagy Carmichael (along with Lauren Bacall) in the Humprey Bogart film, To Have and Have Not. There is a nice clip of this from the movie on here if you want to check it out.
Thanks for posting, came looking for videos of this song as it's in the NYT crossword. I see some have criticized the singer but as with all jazz, it's the singer + the musicians that make things cook, and I think this is a great recipe. According to an amazon uk commentary, this Lillian Boutte song is backed up by: "the Marsala brothers, Marty on trumpet and Joe on clarinet, Eddie Condon on guitar and Stan King on drums, but further mystery surrounds the pianist, Queenie Ada Rubin."
When your alone and the one you loved is gone, yes, we are blue. The memories are so good that the blues don't last. But, yah I'm blue and if you knew the love I've known you'd be blue too. Love ya Old Man!
I have had this recording for years and did not know who sang it. I searched youtube for the title and found it was Lillian Boutte. It is a great recording but it is clearly not Ella. She sounded nothing like this at any stage in her career. I have been an Ella fan since about 1980.
One of the all time great vocalists ever in the world. She can really sing with out any help from studio technology the way most singers are helped today.
@misbreadfruit Oh my god!! This is the version of Am I Blue? that I currently have! I have been looking for the singer of this song for almost 6 years!
@Sshelly34213 Lillian Boutte I think is in her 40s on this rendition of Am I Blue?...She is now 60 or 61. She has a brother who is also a great Singer by the name of John Boutte. She also has a niece who sings although her name slips me right now. They all have postings here on youtube. Lillian still sounds great and performs frequently in New Orleans and Germany.
@misbreadfruit Thanks so much! I'll definitely have to check them out, I can't believe I finally found out who sang this version. I never thought I'd find it.
this is just not Ella, she sings in a different different way, this is not her style moreover the inflections are very rare, Ella had never ever sang like this.
I've been dying to hear an uninterrupted/full version of Batman's amazing voice singing this amazing song ever since I saw that Justice League Episode. I wonder why they don't produce an album full of different League members singing different songs. After all, most of them sound good when they sing. That anime, BLEACH, has albums with each voice actor singing a couple of songs. NO FAIR, I say.
I am an Ella devotee and this is definitely not her but it's definitely a good recording :) I think Blue Skies is a good example of her younger singing
i don't think its Ella.. The piano guy is doing figures that sound more modern. Her players didnt do stuff like that.. A good imitation.. She wouldnt have gone for that piano style to back her up.. That last chord by the piano guy? Ella would have nixed it
I don't think it's Ella. It just doesn't sound like her voice. The tone isn't the same as Ella's. It kinda sounds like someone who has just styled themselves on Ella's way of singing.
Billie Holiday's was great, but this song's been done by many people and this version is certainly one of the better ones. Ethel Waters was the first, and she's almost as good as Billie in singing it.
But my favorite is Teddi King. Some may disagree, but I think she's underrated and the arrangement of the song when she does it is killer.
Don't know anymore than any of you folks but it sounds like Sarah Vaughn to me . Who ever it is , it's a great version . Thanks for putting this up and I hope you solve the mystery of who this . They deserve the credit for a great performance .
I didn't know about this song from batman, but i am soooo happy that he made others know great music like this. :)

This ain't Ella as advertised. You need to change the title of this page. This singer, whoever the hell it is, wouldn't be hired to get Ella coffee.

haha, now, seriously, try listening to a couple of HER songs. This could never be her, NEVER.
