  • This game is so slow IT SUCKS

  • @LuniaVideo Your comment is bad and you should feel bad.

  • @TheOtherLioyd Since I upset you so much, that made me feel quite good actually. :)

  • This is sum chill music

  • I still have it,good memories.1997 summer nights playing it on my sony trinitron..this music, this sunset stage..

  • i still have this scratched up game. yet it still works. its SLOW on emulators so dont bother playing anywhere else but pSX. i used to get this game back when it came out. too bad you guys didnt get it but i did. this game can get just as challenging as tekken. it was kinda hard for me at first but i know how to get through it. i Pwn people at Gren, he's my favorite character. and also this game influenced me to do music. thumbs up because it was my first PSX Games along with RR and tekken.

  • Chuji = Kazyua,

  • Epic moveset Rip-off.

  • @Takashi942 HURP DURP TEKKEN INVENTED PUNCHING PEOPLE

  • @TheOtherLioyd

    >Implying I said they've invented punching people.

  • @Takashi942 >Implying you didn't imply it OH GOD WHAT AM I DOING

Smartassness aside, Tekken and VF moves were seen a lot in other '90s 3D fighters for some reason. Tekken moves especially, to such an extent I'm beginning to suspect Namco actually put them on sale for other developers to grab...

  • @TheOtherLioyd

Cool story bro, but it lacks important substance such as magikarp.

  • @Takashi942 Quoting years-old 4chan memes makes you witty and clever.

  • @TheOtherLioyd

    True Story.

  • @Takashi942 Kids, this is why we don't deserve freedom.

  • детство !

  • aainda so viiciado nesse game *--*'

  • lol...i bought this game for $2 in the store the other day (I live in Japan)

Works well on the PS3. This game is still so good, years after playing it.

  • Similar to Tekken 3, but this game is way 3D fight before Tekken

  • Tobal 2 had graphics that would even rival atleast the Dreamcast at the time, this game was ahead of it's time in every aspect.great game this is.

  • @SpinDoctor91 lol how you comparate the first game for Dreamcast Sonic adventure whit this?? are you kidding? whel i see virtual figter 3tb and grphically and combos and a lot of stuff its too much better than this game, please !! tobal its a great game but don compare with dreamcast pls is like compare a gameboy advance vs nintendo Ds -_-!

  • @sonicromer

uh first of all i never even mentioned Sonic Adventure,i mentioned Dreamcast.o_O secondly, are you blind? look at this game,it was obviously on a higher graphical ground AT THE TIME! sure there are much better graphics now,but even know this Tobal 2 looks great.you don't know what your talking about my man.

  • @ GladyskProdZ It's unfortunate you think VF is "crap", so many others of the fighting game community beg to differ. I also think the champion of VF of the World Cyber Games would like to ask you a few questions about said topic. As I'm sure many others of the fighting game community would like to ask you. If VF is crap, and this game has nearly been unanimously conceded to be akin to, then what does that make this?

  • @Ronnock !?! Do you realy think the reason VF came this far is 'cuz it's popular? It wouldn't be the first time a producer puts his own money into a project he does not want to see killed.

I've been a fighting game fan for as long as I can remember, a game fan since I can't remember and been following the industry real close.

Many games, music album or movies suffered from lac of publicity. Tobal came out in 1996 and was eclipsed by all the other good games.

  • I can't tell if it's more Tekken or more VF.

  • @Ronnock Dude! This game add a lot more to offer than VF! I am sad you compared it to that piece of CR*P!

  • @GladyskProdZ I don't know how I should be offended? By presuming I was saying this was crap or by presuming that VF is superior in some way? I implied neither. I was merely making an observation that I couldn't quite discriminate at the time, but having played the first one not too long ago for an extended period of time, I do believe it is more like the latter of my statement and not the former.

  • Tobal 2 was a jewel. And had an engine superior to Virtua Fighter.

  • @GladyskProdZ ur right about that. the mechanics were superior.

  • @JHussla211 Thank You!

  • @GladyskProdZ the game mechanics are very similar to VF and the same director worked on the VF games as well as Tobal 1 and 2

    think before you talk shit

  • @nic1357 The game mechanics are similar!?! Have you ever played the game? Cuz if you had, you'd be on my side!

  • @GladyskProdZ yea i had tobal 2 when it came out and ive started playing it again recently. ive also played every VF except VF5

  • @GladyskProdZ God forbid two games be good AT THE SAME TIME. Also, you're a fucking idiot.

  • @Ronnock Surprisingly enough, it's its own thing entirely. The buttons are arranged by height (high, mid, low), the movement is fluid and fully 3D (think DOA), the grappling engine is a hell of a lot more advanced, the juggling is unlike either and just about every move actually has an animation for getting blocked -- one of the only fighters to do that at all, and the only one to such a degree. If anything, I actually find the engine a little TOO realistic for the Toriyama art style...

  • @Lioyd1rving Get off the videos loser. I've seen you on various Tobal videos bashing the game.... so STFU and GTFO.

  • @Charliem1994 what

  • @Lioyd1rving Shut the fuck up, get the fuck off.... geez.

  • @Charliem1994 No, are you sure you're replying to the right dude? Because in case you didn't notice, I have a whole wall of text on this very page about how fresh and fluid the game is.

  • @Lioyd1rving I just saw you commenting on another video saying the fighting system doesn't suit the art style bla bla. But anyway I thought you were some troll looking for a fight. I apologise.

  • This should've been an ongoing franchise like VF, Tekken, and Soul Calibur.

  • This game was awesome xD I remember every character (of the main playable ones, not the unlockables in arcade or quest mode) had a pretty cheap chargeable attack, which despite taking your own life away while charging could instantly kill opponent when hit if charged long enough, if not it still did a lot of dmg. I remember this Chuji guy's charged move was a Kame-Hame-Ha type shot. xD don't remember, but i think the combo for most was "back, back + hold down square" or something...

  • this game was the best! i remember playing it 2-3 hours a day, when you get 10-12 hit combos stardust would burst like crazy.

  • lol i used to own with the old guy. his grapples were so fast it was kinda cheap.

  • Best fighting game on ps1!!! Good graphic and music!!!

  • this game was amazing, had a perfect grapple/grab technique in which a push and pull aspect came into play once a grapple was applied.

as well as over 200 extra characters you could get by playing through a dungeon type mode.

they should re-release it on psn

  • Dream Factory should have never stopped making this game. This had so much potential during it's time. I know it could have made it to a PS2 port, and maybe even PS3. Also Akira Toriyama's artwork was great for this game. Wish he was a secret character in this part.

  • yea, they gave it up.

  • The movement is so fluid you wouldn't think it was PS1 at all. That system was more powerful than most remember it to be. Tobal 2 was a great game, shame that most didn't get to have the same luck as I did as a kid because it wasn't in the states (to my knowledge).

  • Awesome game!!

I wish that Square still were doing awesome games like this every year.

But now only cares doing RPGs most likely.

  • you know the just published it

  • anyway whats happened to Dreamfactory after The Bouncer for PS2?

  • For a PS1 game the graphics were great

  • I imported this game back in the day. It was a blast to play. Gameplay was good. Good graphics and smooth animation.

  • this game looks awesome. looks like a classic even though I've never played. And I see a lot of Tekken 3 in it, so Namco must've been paying attention.

  • I like the fact that they kept it simple and still looks slick for the time.

  • Yes, I'm not denying many of the most recently added Tekken characters are completely motion captured... Look at Dragunov and his wonderful combat sambo style... What I was really saying is that Namco didn't took time to motion capture ALL the moves. They hand-made many animations in the first Tekken and now, after some 15 years, there they still are. Not Tobal. That was my point.

  • This game had the most advanced grappling system seen in a fighting game EVER... They still have to forge another fighter this good on this side. Animations were all motion-captured too, that's why is more realistic even than the most recent Tekken release where hand-made animations still reside (shame on Namco...)

  • @ryo1999

"Animations were all motion-captured too, that's why is more realistic even than the most recent Tekken release where hand-made animations still reside."

Animations in Tekken have always been motion-captured with the help of several martial-arts institutes and famous martial-artists. Tekken doesn't aim for realism, but this doesn't change the fact the Eddy's/Christie's moves were motion-captured by 'Mastre Marcelo Pereira' and 'ITF world champion' participated for Hwoarang's moves.

  • no problem

  • is copy tekken and dbz

  • Maximus is a fool...Tobal 2 is the diametric opposite of Tekken and other button mashers. The just frame combo system will punish you if you just sit there and mash.

Tobal 2 is based on risk vs. reward. The grappling system defines it. Also, clown, the counter system in Tobal 2 is PERFECT. You have to master it to fully appreciate it. But I'm sure you have mastered nothing in Tobal 2.

Perhaps you tried mashing and couldn't get very deep into the game?

  • Here's the rundown: So BloodyPuppy says that Soul Calbur 3 is nowhere as deep as Tobal 2, which I agree. djfakt disagrees and replies by saying SC3 is deep because it has lots of moves and combos for every character. I reply to djfakt by saying that moves and combos don't make a fighting game deep, and I use Tekken as an example of a game that has lots of moves/combos but no depth whatsoever. Then you come in and flame me cause you misunderstood my comment. I never said Tekken was deep at all.

  • leave it alone dude this will never end

    fan of ur videos btw

  • Thanks. I appreciate it.

  • @MaximusDread

"I use Tekken as an example of a game that has lots of moves/combos but no DEPTH whatsoever."

Just out of curiosity, how much experience (at competitive-level) do you have in Tekken to express such opinion? How familiar are you with its basic game-engine, nuances, game-mechanics and related intricacies to make such claims?

Keep in mind that I am not comparing it to 'Tobal 2' or any other game for this purpose.

  • I understand the game mechanics, but I'm not the best at using them. The problem with it now is that the entire engine has been overhauled by juggling. Now every fighter has multiple strings and inputs used to juggle foes across the arena for ridiculous damage. The T6 engine has a bound system for more juggle-friendly moves and rage for 2x damage. Chaingrabs, counterthrows, and other past engine maneuvers are now pointless. Players guard, wavedash, parry and strike until they get a juggle in.

  • @MaximusDread

Nothing has been overhauled. Did you play Tekken 2? How about Tekken 3? The ONLY difference is number of hits, NOTHING ELSE. The 3/4-hit juggles in earlier Tekken(s) inflict almost the same amount of damage as 9-hit juggles in Tekken 6 INCLUDING bound. Chain-grabs are as useful as they were before. What is a counter-throw? Which other "past engine maneuvers" are you referring to?

Besides, you do understand the concept of depth, right? Number of viable options makes a game deeper.

  • By mentioning Tekken 6, I was referring to the upgraded version which is Tekken 6:BR.*

  • @MaximusDread

    (cont'd)

By the way, did you ever have a chance to study and analyse frame-data or flow-charts in Tekken? Just for the reference purposes, did you know about frame-punishment, frame-traps, oki, tech-traps, wall-traps, sabaki and tech-catches as well as their role in gameplay?

I am certainly not implying anything about 'Tobal', BUT you should have been more tactful about exemplifying your theories because one needs to have adequate knowledge before making a logical comparison.

  • Ok, I take it back, there's more to Tekken then I originally thought. I played all of the Tekken and I still prefer the older ones over the recent ones, but the new ones are just as good, I just have to dive deeper into the engine.

  • I didn't say it is deep just becuase of "large" movesets, ding-dong. Tobal 2 is nothing BUT strategy. Ever hear of "just frame"? It's the combo system that Tobal 2 uses...The grappling system is BASED on risk/reward. You speak ignorantly, Max. Tobal is NOT about juggling.

  • Having a large moveset and combos for every character doesn't make a fighting game deep. Tekken characters have lots of moves and combos, but there's little strategy involved in them. You just launch the opponent and juggle all the moves togather. I'll admit, it takes skill, but not strategy. A deep fighting game is a game engine with risks, openings, counter opportunities and mindgames to keep your opponent guessing, almost like a game of chess.

    ----------------------------

    Allow me:

  • is there anyway you can get tobal 2, i still have a ps2 xD and i LOVE this game, i named my Dog Chuji =P but i forgot the name of my FAVORITE character, if anyone knows if you can get Tobal 2 in AMERICA plz tell me (and if you know the irish character's name, hes my fave)

  • sorry, the only way u can play tobal 2 is on an psx emulator, trust me i know!

  • the first guy fights like akira from viruta fighter

  • Questions for whomever: How deep is the attack reversal system in this game? I think I saw an attack get reversed, but then the reversal got reversed, kind of like the "chicken" move in Tekken (which I love). I've heard rumors that Asuka can reverse the chicken, meaning she can perform a reversal reversal reversal, but I have yet to see anyone do that. Is there anything like that in this game? Will there ever be a Tobal 3? Tobal 2 looks pretty friggin' sweet.

  • are there any vids of someone doing a speed run in this game i managed to beat the whole quest mode myself but i wanted to see if anyone can do it quickly took me a few months lol

  • considering this game is for playstation these graphics are dope.

  • agree this game had the best graphics!!

  • "I don't know much about Tobal (I searched for the video after going through old Game Informers) but I'm going to have to disagree with you on Soul Calibur 3. Deep that game wasn't. The fighting wasn't as smooth as it's predecessors, there were several glitches, character creation was pretty half-assed, the list goes on. I like the game, it just isn't deep."

No, the fighting engine in that game IS deep. Just look at the number of moves available to each character. The number of combos is nuts..

  • i remember renting the first tobal at blockbuster back in the day i never wanted to take it back when i heard of the second tobal i wanted like a crack head loves crack but never came out

  • is this only ntsc j if so damn i cant play it but tobal no 1 looks and plays better imo

  • I used to have Tobal 2. Believe me, it looked *infinitely* better than its predecessor. The real highlight of the game was the "quest"-type mode ... at the time, its graphics were absolutely stunning.

  • Best graphics in a PSX fighting game

  • @HernandezBalaDoce There was an interesting article in an OPSM back in the day that compared this to Gran Turismo in terms of processing power used. GT was around 85% of the consoles power while Tobal 2 was around 95%.

Awesome game, I still play it from time to time.

  • Absolutely revolutionary game. Let's list the big things....60 fps, complete 3D movement, grappling system, counter system, star combos, quest mode, fresh music, and graphics that have aged well. No game that I've played since has had such a DEEP fighting engine... Although I was reluctant to admit that Soul Cali 3 is pretty damn close...But even that doesn't have the grappling system =)

Damn shame that more Americans didn't get to play it... I was a lucky cat. Ok, I'll stop now...Sorry =)

  • I'm with u, pal. Shame there were no further sequels. Don't u think SC 3 is deeper?

  • I don't know much about Tobal (I searched for the video after going through old Game Informers) but I'm going to have to disagree with you on Soul Calibur 3. Deep that game wasn't. The fighting wasn't as smooth as it's predecessors, there were several glitches, character creation was pretty half-assed, the list goes on. I like the game, it just isn't deep.

  • Greatest 3D fighter ever. Period...

  • Indeed a great one, But I still prefer Bloody Roar as my all-time favorite. ^^

  • "Indeed a great one, But I still prefer Bloody Roar as my all-time favorite. ^^" I played them both and Tobal 2 is MUCH better. MUCH DEEPER...WAY better graphics, better music, etc. Bloody Roar was a button masher... You probably just couldn't figure out the star combos or grappling and counter systems. It's ok though. It takes a real gamer to appreciate the beauty of Tobal 2; most Americans can't... I'm a snob, I know.

  • I respect your opinion. Tobal 2 is a REALLY good fighter. Better than most I've ever played. And yes, I can master the Star combos, Grappling, and the Counter Systems. So please do not tell me what I can and cannot figure out in my favorite genre of video games.

  • Could you do a play through with Chuji in Tourney Mode?

  • O_o are these kids are something? and why are their fists so big??

  • It's called stylization. Akira Toriyama, typically draws characters with stubby proportions.

  • damn i never got 2 play this game only part 1. Bring this 2 downloadable content square!! sans teh quest modes that is

  • Hard to believe this is a PS1 game.

  • One of the best 3D fighting games out there, I love playing it on my PSP.

  • WHAT!?!, its on the PSP!?, I'm going to try and find it now.

  • i'm sure he means he uses a homebrew operating system that runs ps1 games using (perfect) emulation

  • Yeah probably, I thaught of that after I wrote the comment.

  • Wow this game looks amazing.

  • Since characters were design by Akira Toryama, I always thought these 2 look like Yamcha and Master Roshi. What Saturn game had lip movement and 60fps?

  • It actually looked Saturn ish. Saturn fighters already had lip movement and 60fps too. Tobal 2 is fantastic. In my heart, I felt it was superior to Tekken 3.. just less accesible.

  • Actually it was better than Tekken 3, it had fighting mechanics and system that Tekken still doesn't have to date. It's very sad the game/company died off and they never made Tobal for PS2 :/

  • Dream Factory is still around, but they haven't been the same since both The Bouncer and Kakuto Chojin flopped. The only thing speaking of a remake is that Square Enix is releasing the game on Japanese cell phones. I have no idea why they would do that.

  • It's cheaper for them. They'd rather put more money/resources into another shitty Final Fantasy sequel/remake.

  • Which is why I don't pay attention to Final Fantasy games because it is too much...

  • no not really better than tekken 3

  • you actually deserve a "THUMB DOWN" ! -1 from me as well.!

  • It actually looked Saturn ish. Saturn fighters already had lip movement and 60fps too. Tobal 2 is fantastic. In my heart, I felt it was superior to Tekken 3.. just less accesible.

  • Best fighting game ever...

  • I think it's the first game that had character's lip movement as they speak.

  • The animation in Tobal games were definitely some of the best from the time. The music was also pretty cool. :D

  • This game is one of my favorite fighting games of all time. Can't believe it never made it to U.S. The graphic is awsome!

  • I agree with above commenter

  • man this game was soooo ahead of his time
