@listert no ... china-berry is a type of mahogany with the hardness similar to the mahogany in some gibsons and it grows in florida where i live so its my most useful material for a build with all-over balanced tone like a les paul ... it will be painted also so everything is for tone ... but ill send pictures
@listert i need a finishing tip ... if i add walnut colored grain filler to a piece of walnut to fill the pores will it do anything to the figure or should i use a neutral color filler?
@caulinrocker1 I've only used mahogany pore filler. it had a reddish tinge to it but it mostly got rubbed off again once it dried leaving residue in the pores. If anything it brought the grain out a bit. I say try it on some offcuts first.
Very nice axe indeed. Nice job on this. I was thinking the exact same thing for my next project guitar. Mahogany body with fender no caster pickups. What does this beast sound like? Im sure you were thinking the same thing I was, that gibson sustain with that tele twang when you combined that wood with those PUPs.
@allanjenny Initially I just wanted a standard tele but like the look and resonance of mahogany. It does have a good ringing sound to it. Only down side is its pretty heavy like an LP. I recently swapped the fender pickups for dimarzio Tone Zone bridge humbucker with coil cut and pure velvet neck. These are much clearer and punchier than the fenders. Sound is definitely recognisable as a tele, although the tone zone can get nice and dirty.
@listert hi. Nice guitar and that is a big chunk of mahogany. I bet it sounds grand. I want to build a tele style guitar as well and was wondering what mahogany would sound like? Was it difficult to do the fret work without the tension on the strings?
@R0ckers2R0ckers Mahogany sounds great , lots of sustain, but it's really heavy, at least the piece I bought for this build is. There's a vid in my list , '1st Guitar Build' I think, which is also mahogany but is light as any ash body. Re fret work - it can only be done with the strings off. The idea is to get the fingerboard level and then level the frets. You may have to tweek the truss rod while you do it. This neck is a thick profile, fortunately it stays pretty level on its own.
I'm no expert but, I like the look of wood so will probably be trying to do clear finishes for a good while. I did a white spray job for my neice and to be honest the cost of nitro cellulose and the hassle of avoiding the fumes didn't work for me. Plus I didn't think it came out that well compared to the clear. Re Ash - I guess it would depend on whether its got a good grain pattern.
The copper foil is shielding, all cavities are wired to earth and hopefully keeps the hum down. I read an article doing it somewhere so added it to the build. I don't get hum problems but maybe that's just a concidence ;-)
nice guitar...

Beautiful Job. I love the finish and the chrome neck pick-up choice.
Just a dumb question here. What does the copper sheeting lining do for the control cutouts?
