lol when this came out me and all my high school buddies working at McDicks called this the "Arse Deluxe" and called the Big N Tasty the "Wet N Nasty."
McDonalds ,for all it's iconic glory had alot of Epic failures in its history. The McLean,McDLT and this one are most noteable. For a time they tried to get too "highbrow" with it's creations. The Big Mac and Quarterpounder are its bread and butter and should always be
I remember the day the Arch Deluxe first came out. I was in Ottawa for a Gr. 8 school trip and my best friend and I, went into McDonalds for lunch. People were ordering the Arch Deluxe, left, right, and center. They just HAD to have it. Insanity. I'll never forget the hoopla, over it....lol
I was so disappointed when this was discontinued, the burger was awesome but McDonalds botched the ad campaign. They should bring it back and call it the 1/4 pounder deluxe or McArch.
This was the only burger that ever made me seriously look at McDonalds as a place where burgers r really good & not just cheap. Carl's Jr has had a long string of quality burgers & they always seem 2 continue 2 add 2 their menu instead of scrapping some in favor of others.
@302MarkVII The botched ad campaign played a role, but it wasn't the deciding factor. People would still have eaten the burger if they had enjoyed it. But the concept of the mustard/mayo sauce on a potato roll was just too far "out there" for consumers. I personally liked the burger, but the people had spoken. Can't compare McDonalds to Carl's Jr. Their business is built on completely different concepts.
That ish was sooooo NASTY. ugh! Maybe it was nasty to me b/c I was a kid and the Arch Burger was marketed toward ADULTS. Now that im older I may like it but back then (when i was a kid) that shit was disgusting.
Am I the only one who thinks this burger is better than a 3-some with jessica alba and megan fox. No thats not a joke either even though its pretty funny.
I remember one of the Arch Deluxe commercials that all of these guys getting their shoes shined with a black and red shoe shine machine and one of the guys asks "What is the red side for?" . Next they show Ronald McDonald getting his big red clown shoes shined on the red side. Sound familiar to anyone?

I bet morbidly fat people have the equivalent of an orgasm every time they eat at McDonalds. Their rolls quiver with excitement as the grease coats the inside of their mouth and they suck down a liter of diet cola and 2 Big Macs. As soon as they leave they find themselves dreaming about their next chance to return. Like an opiate addict their stomach begs for just one more hit of greasy goodness.
Actually, I get longer, more sustained orgasms by eating at Burger King. Sometimes I even find hair in my burgers ... hmmm, kinky!
Seriously, is there anyone who actually *likes* fast food? I'm the first to admit that I've consumed it on occasion, usually out of sheer desperation, but I've never actually looked forward to eating the sludge.
I love a good hamburger - a *real* hamburger, not the slop you get at McDonald's. It's a shame some people don't know the difference.
One of the biggest fails in history. They wanted to target adults, so the original ad campaign had kids looking at the Arch Deluxe and going, "Yuck" and "I don't get it." Yeah, that'll work wonders.
Not me man, it made me curious about the "adult taste". At age 12 I got this burger every time I went. The special "arch sauce" they put on it was so good.
High price as well killed the AD. $1.99 for something smaller than a Whopper, plus potato bread and one of the most misguided ad campaings ever.
One had an old man stabbing trash at a little leauge field, "Darn kids, darn kids.." Then he stabs an AD box, "Darn adults". Trying to market a burger strictly to adults = pointless. Good eats, though.
yeah i worked there at the time..and when the AD debuted they also debuted a crispy chicken sandwich, a new grilled sandwich and a bigger fish fillet sandwich if memory serves. therse were all served in boxes instead of wrappers. i loved the AD sauce. i would always dip my fries in it like ketchup...it was weird i had never tasted anything like that. i believe this burger also had ketcuhup on the bottom bun. it was a good burger. i have fond memories of working at mcd's from 96 through mid 99.
I also had the extreme pleasure of working at McDs during this time. I freakin' loved this burger. I remember we were making the Arch Deluxe II by mistake when it was first being tested. It was the same burger but double like the Big Mac. I always tell my friends this was my favorite fast food burger of all time. I feel so lucky for being able to make it and have it for myself a bunch of times. My heart sunk when I was told it we were no longer making it.
I did too! I remember ads showing that it's a sandwich not meant for kids...but I still liked it. I'm glad I only ate a few though, because my mom stopped me and I might've been a fatass today.
I'll never forget Letterman's response to this campaign with the "Top 10 New Fast Food Sandwiches for Adults" (or something like that). My favorite one was "Quarter fucking pounder with goddamn cheese."
The Arch Deluxe was good when made correctly (with the bacon WELL peppered). Product inconsistency did not help.
The creepy part was the image on the paper "tray mat". It was of this black & white image of this scared little kid looking up saying something like "I'm not big enough for it yet" or something.
I always turned the paper over or tossed it. Creepy, like the Burger King...King guy.
I researched this just today. I am 21. I remember eating this as a small child, like 8?12? I can't remember. But all I knew is that it was superior taste...my pathetic happy meals failed in comparision...a dinky cheeseburger with sour ketchup.... vs the patty..american cheese..bacon..secret sauce..crisp lettuce...it pains me the closest thing I can get to it now is a Big Mac with bacon :(
i worked at McDonalds when they discontinued it. i have no idea why they did. it had arch sauce which was basically mustard, onions, lettuce, tomato, and round bacon. (not canadian bacon, crisp bacon but it was round). u could get cheese on it.

I can see it now - it is 1996 - some 10-year-old takes off the headphones of his CD Walkman (playing Setting Sun from the Chemical Brothers) and asks for an Arch Deluxe - is refused b/c it's "just for adults"; he gets his 18-yr-old bro to order one for him, sits down to eat it & is busted by a cop whom the McD worker sent, b/c it's for "adults only" and getting an adult to get one for him is like getting an adult to buy beer for a kid.
I remember seeing the ads that said the Arch Deluxe was for grown-ups only. For the months that followed, I set out to prove that wasn't true by ordering one every time I went. I was a real rebel, huh? XD
I remember the burger being pretty good. I wouldn't mind seeing it return...with a different ad campaign, of course.
Thats sandwich was the best Sandwich that place had to offer...however it wasnt as good as the PIZZA....man oh man i wish they had that again...btw??? i cant find any commercials on the pizza? did they ever even attempt on making one??? I know it lasted from 92-97...but thats all i know?
yeah and I remember the free coupon that came on of the box when you brought it to get another one for free...man I miss this damn sandwhich it was really good
It was just a coincidence that I happened to find this commercial on a olf VHS video tape. I knew there would be some interest, so I uploaded it. This is the only one I have, but perhaps people might have more they could share! :)
Hey...do you remember recording tv shows back in the day with your VCR????if you do??? then check them out?! thats ofcourse you didnt through out all your VHS's???
Man I miss this burger! To me it's still the best thing McD's has ever done and I'd actually still eat there if they still had it! Call me odd, but I like this.. just like Cookies'N'Creme Twix... and Crystal Pepsi... Those are the 3 commercial foods I miss the most. The funny thing is I didnt even like Crystal Pepsi all that much until AFTER they discontinued it and then I found myself craving it... Musta been the heroine they put in it.
LOL...but yeah, I'd def rank Crystal Pepsi and the Arch Deluxe among my most-missed foods from the 90s. And to jump ahead a few years, I also miss those "Inside Out" Reese's they had for a limited time a few years back...was cool having the PB on the outside and the chocolate inside. :-)
That's funny- I love Reese's Peanut Butter cups too but never tried the 'inside out' ones. I figured "Why mess with perfection?" Hahaha! I figured they must have messed with the peanut butter somehow to get it on the outside- like adding peanut butter flavor to white chocolate- which I cant stand.
Yeah, it was part of a line of "limited edition" Reese's introduced around that time (white chocolate, caramel, cookies & cream, etc.)...although one variant, the double-sized "Big Cup", is still around today.
The sales vs. ad money spent on that sandwich was the main reason McDonald's buried it and never brought it back. They could've done a regular ad campaign and said "this is a fuckin awesome sandwich", but leave it to McDonald's to fuck shit up...anways, best burger ever.
I too worked at McDonald's around the time the Arch Deluxe debuted, and looking back...it did bomb alright (which probably led to Subway catching up to McD), but I thought it tasted good.
i agree, best burger of all time. the other day i sent an email to mcd's begging them to bring it back. hell, they bring back the mcrib why not the arch?
when i was a little kid, about 7, i used to think that i was one badass MF while eating an arch D because it was a 'grown up sandwhich'. man, those were the good ol' days.
Why the hell did this fail so much? Never have I eaten at McDonald's so repeatedly than in 1996 when the Arch Deluxe came out. It was the only thing I have actually enjoyed at McDonalds. It was awesome!
....what the fuck....that was easily the worst commercial I have ever scene....ever.....like one thing led to another without any making any sense....like.....just what the fuck.....
I was maybe 12 when this came out, and i never wanted it because the commercials made it seem like a boring grown up thing. I guess i'll have to wait til they release it once more
I'm pretty certain that it failed due to competition. Where I live if you wanted hamburgers for your kids you went to McDonalds; if you wanted a hamburger for yourself you went to Whataburger! (If you wanted a *really* good hamburger for yourself you went to Jucy's, but I digress...)
Well, speaking from someone who was at a mickey d's working there the day it came out in 96...they had a huge blowout! samples and t shirts sodas in little cups...all cheesy fancy and stuff...lol...we met the guy too who made the burger...he was dorky. I think they sent him on a tour of restauraunts...it didnt sell too well if i recall....later on that is...the first month or so it was a big seller, but a pain in the ass to keep in a box and make it neat
the arch deluxe isn't the big xtra. the arch deluxe was part of the short-lived "grown up tastes" campaign, presented as a more sophisticated burger for an adult palate. It failed to catch on and is seen as one of the most expensive flops of all time, on the scale of New Coke. McDonalds sunk over $100 million in marketing this burger.
lol when this came out me and all my high school buddies working at McDicks called this the "Arse Deluxe" and called the Big N Tasty the "Wet N Nasty."

I remember this burger twas my favorite ever. even better than big mac!
JaycieKyler 3 years ago
LOL...but yeah, I'd def rank Crystal Pepsi and the Arch Deluxe among my most-missed foods from the 90s. And to jump ahead a few years, I also miss those "Inside Out" Reese's they had for a limited time a few years back...was cool having the PB on the outside and the chocolate inside. :-)
WhatsAYak 3 years ago
That's funny- I love Reese's Peanut Butter cups too but never tried the 'inside out' ones. I figured "Why mess with perfection?" Hahaha! I figured they must have messed with the peanut butter somehow to get it on the outside- like adding peanut butter flavor to white chocolate- which I cant stand.
dreammasterltd 3 years ago
Yeah, it was part of a line of "limited edition" Reese's introduced around that time (white chocolate, caramel, cookies & cream, etc.)...although one variant, the double-sized "Big Cup", is still around today.
WhatsAYak 3 years ago
Crystal Pepsi was vile, but the Arch Deluxe was the best burger on McDonalds menu till they discontinued it.

That chef sounds like "Chef Tony", or the prick who flogs off superbly sharp knives that rust in a day at 3am.

america's favorite!

The sales vs. ad money spent on that sandwich was the main reason McDonald's buried it and never brought it back. They could've done a regular ad campaign and said "this is a fuckin awesome sandwich", but leave it to McDonald's to fuck shit up...anways, best burger ever.

omg. I was working at McDonalds at the time, so i had everything at 50% off. I ate so many of those burger. This is the best burger ever!

McDonalds best burger ever! I miss that thing
cokes42 4 years ago
I too worked at McDonald's around the time the Arch Deluxe debuted, and looking back...it did bomb alright (which probably led to Subway catching up to McD), but I thought it tasted good.
johnnyaalaska 4 years ago
i agree, best burger of all time. the other day i sent an email to mcd's begging them to bring it back. hell, they bring back the mcrib why not the arch?

when i was a little kid, about 7, i used to think that i was one badass MF while eating an arch D because it was a 'grown up sandwhich'. man, those were the good ol' days.
MMaNutz8451 4 years ago 7
Yeah, I think @ that age, we all thought ordering something not on the "kids' menu" @ any restaurant made us cool. :-D
WhatsAYak 4 years ago
what other burger out there has a circular piece of bacon? not one that i can think of.
long live the arch deluxE!
p.s. i'm hoping for an arch duex in the near future!
MMaNutz8451 4 years ago 5
Why the hell did this fail so much? Never have I eaten at McDonald's so repeatedly than in 1996 when the Arch Deluxe came out. It was the only thing I have actually enjoyed at McDonalds. It was awesome!
madmadhatter 4 years ago 3
Yeah, really...back in those days, I'd usually eat a McD's about once a month, and I'd get the AD 9x out of 10...most underrated burger of all time!
WhatsAYak 4 years ago 2
The Arch Deluxe was the best hamburger McDonald's has ever made, hands down.
spynalchrd 4 years ago 3
the absolute best burger ever made i agree bring it back it was soo good
fearnunbut1 4 years ago 2
I loved the Arch Deluxe. It was no Apple Pan hickory burger. But still, it tasted good.
clevelandphil 4 years ago
They should bring it back. I used to get the Arch deluxe with bacon all the time. I don't care how unhealthy it was, it tasted damn good.

....what the fuck....that was easily the worst commercial I have ever scene....ever.....like one thing led to another without any making any sense....like.....just what the fuck.....
spiiiderman 4 years ago
I was maybe 12 when this came out, and i never wanted it because the commercials made it seem like a boring grown up thing. I guess i'll have to wait til they release it once more
thenoseymethod 4 years ago
I was 7 when it came out - and even then, I didn't really like the burgers that came in my Happy Meals.

I miss the Arch Deluxe...was in HS when it came out, and used to have one whenever I'd visit a McD's.

me too I LOVED it and I was at the age where all I wanted was the toy from te kids meal...

*sigh* Me too...those were the days!
phonographgirl 4 years ago
I'm pretty certain that it failed due to competition. Where I live if you wanted hamburgers for your kids you went to McDonalds; if you wanted a hamburger for yourself you went to Whataburger! (If you wanted a *really* good hamburger for yourself you went to Jucy's, but I digress...)
fixman88 4 years ago
Ah, what an infamous commercial flop.
Pythybaby 4 years ago
Well, speaking from someone who was at a mickey d's working there the day it came out in 96...they had a huge blowout! samples and t shirts sodas in little cups...all cheesy fancy and stuff...lol...we met the guy too who made the burger...he was dorky. I think they sent him on a tour of restauraunts...it didnt sell too well if i recall....later on that is...the first month or so it was a big seller, but a pain in the ass to keep in a box and make it neat
pika23 4 years ago
I didn't care if it was messy I would just lean over the box and scarf it down LOL man I loved that thing *sigh* good memories

omg i remeber the arch deluxe before i went on a diet i ate them like there was no tomarrow
678BUMPERLOVER 5 years ago
the arch deluxe isn't the big xtra. the arch deluxe was part of the short-lived "grown up tastes" campaign, presented as a more sophisticated burger for an adult palate. It failed to catch on and is seen as one of the most expensive flops of all time, on the scale of New Coke. McDonalds sunk over $100 million in marketing this burger.
thecorduroysuit 5 years ago
Yes, but IIRC, the Big Xtra replaced the Arch Deluxe on the Canadian menu in early '99.
88HJS 4 years ago
Oy, Arch Delux. They lost millions on that plan, especially when they switched the fish and Chicken sandwitches.
Those new Chicken sandwitches are just the same, a big bun covering up a dry as hell chicken patty
Soultsukino 5 years ago
Now known as the Big Xtra. Which is a horrendous and expensive sandwich
