@Wing: that happened to me once to when I was like 5, I used to be obsessed with insects (shiver), but I was playing in a fire ant mound and I mean like digging in it and I didn't get bitten once. When my mom saw me, she grabbed me out of it, but she was bitten like 3 or 4 times tee hee. 3-4 times was still a small amount seeing as I was literally digging in there nest, I had made it to the egg chamber and the flying ants =}.

It's actually very safe to disturb fire ant mounds, as long as you're careful to stamp them off your feet or rub them off in the grass right after you bother them. Or, simply throw a big rock at it. That's safest. Fire ants are more concerned about fixing their nest than killing you, however you do want to start moving away from a nest once you've messed with it. (There is no law about fire ants in the Southeast.)

In the southeastern US, there is no law about reporting fire ants. They are very common here. We just watch out for their hills, which are everywhere after a hard rain.

I imagine that if you see them in other parts of the country it would be a big deal, tho...

They're common up north arround Lac-Des-Plages too. I think I used to play with some of them Fire Ants. They're really not that bad. Just...don't get them angry.

I actually stood on a fire ant hill once without any shoes on. I stood there for about 5 minutes without knowing and they didn't bite me once. They crawled on my feet but did nothing else. The rest of my fammily tried and they got bit. We still can't figure out why they didn't bite me.
