5:00- onward to the end of the aria and video, listen to that harpsichord in the background! Absolutely brilliant! And Sutherland is a singing machine - beautiful singing but no dramatic commitment, not flavor, no passion, no life. I think Renee Fleming is the same way LOL
I stand corrected. Sutherland is superior to Fleming but my personal opinion is that they are similar in their lavishing too much attention to the vocal line than in dramatic involvement and character study. It was common among many sopranos. Callas seems, to many, to represent the best of both worlds - great voice and dramatic skills..But Sutherland is a better Donna Anna than Fleming I agree.
No problem. And don't get me wrong. I adore Joan Sutherland. I really do love her singing. I also like Beverly Sills, which is mostly rare for a Sutherland fan since Sills & Sutherland were said to be rivals. It was always the "media" of the opera business that created rivalries. Sutherland and Sills both have excellent talent in bel canto
Oh my gosh. Fleming doesn't even bother with the vocal line. She unfortunately milks to emotion in everything she sings, to the point of absolute artless and "unpretty" singing. Sutherland, of course she is criticized for her unsufficient acting but her coloratura and technique makes up for it....Fleming...well...she is just an absolute disgrace.
personally I think Fleming is kinda hit and miss, I think she sounds absolutely wonderful sometimes, but other times she just leaves me like "omg you've got to be kidding me".
I don't know who is the greatest, because I haven't heard all of them. That said, I think Sutherland's is a stand-out, especially because of the vocal size of her Donna Anna, and because she handles the register changes better than most other sopranos. It's easy to stumble a bit in this music, and her firmness of line is so important.
I love the fluent harpsichord in this version..it almost makes it sound like a baroque aria!! But I wouldn't go as far as saying that Sutherland is the greatest Anna ever though!!

@MastersoftheOpera haha if both of them were machines, Sutherland had to be 100,000,000 times better :D Agree, the harpsichord is... splendid!
