in Missouri one year the 17, 5 and 1 year ones all came out at once it was like 96 or 97 does anyone remember that? it was so bad literally you could not walk out side without taking a step and hear them screeching
They do neither.. they only have a lil tubey tounge thing to suck up food with(proboscis? correct me if I'm wrong..) so they're actually harmless... like loud butterflies ^^
These insects are completly harmless... It's a shame that at some places (such my hometown) they're killed by people who believe they might bite or just because their non-smart looking... I used to love to catch them and free them afterwards
@Lonestarry They are completely harmless actually. They are actually a bit fun to play with. They have very small life spans which they spend almost completely on mating and laying eggs, and it takes really long, usually 17 years or so, for them to hatch, so they wont be much of a problem if you dont like them, though you might be annoyed by all the shells and bodies that are left behind.
@Lonestarry I was a bit mistaken, the eggs hatch much quicker, though the larva fall from the trees the eggs are layed in and burry themselves a foot or two underground, and stay there for 13 to 17 years, depending on where you live. Then when they are mature, they dig themselves out and start all over again. But yea, one of the longest maturing stages Ive ever seen, besides humans that is.
can someone help here? do cicadas come out every year but its different groups or is there just one year they all come out at once.i remeber about 4 years ago when i went to the U.S. i came during cicada season it was metal
I love this video it shows nature at its finest. My devil cat brought one in the house the other day, slip over to my channel and take a peak. People its nature! I just posted it yesterday. I didn't realize so many people knew what they were?
god all those clicking bugs would scare the crap out of me.. there is like a couple in my backyard and they click soo much when my dog sniiffs them... it scares the hell ou of me!!! >:[]
She just means that they all come at once. I have them where I live now. Believe me they are everywhere. Sometimes you can't even go outside without getting swarmed.
i have them in my neighborhood right now and when i mow the lawn the run into me and fly around me. they are also kinda scary because they dont fly too well so they look drunk. but anyway the cicadas are also good because we feed them to our pet turtles. O.o
We live in Alexandria, VA, and these were the cicadas that hatch every 17 years. There were so many of them people were raking their yards and putting them in trash sacks. And yes, (in reply to Bokumaru) I know there's bad grammar, but too much trouble to take out the apostrophe!!
Cicadas live underground for almost their entire lives, sucking the juice of tree roots, using their powerful forelegs to dig and to hold on to roots. They're basically giant aphids, and feed on tree sap using a needle-like proboscis. Be glad they're not grasshoppers. They're the world's loudest insect. Nice video.

@JohnIsUber247 17 years for the eggs to hatch? Are you serious? Wow - that has to be a record. Wonder why that is?
