Listen closely & you'll hear pitch problems a well. Still, he has been one the very best tenors in the repetory that suits the vocal athlete. This simply is not his forte. The "wide open" technique/placement that helps him with the thrillings runs/high notes leave him naked when the music demands a warm, lyric sound. Again, he still ranks among the best when singing to his strengths.
I couldn't disagree with you more. This aria requires a more natural, open, youthful tenor sound which Rocky is perfect for. Luigi Alva and Nicolai Gedda also have gorgeous versions. Pavarotti did this role a lot, unfortunately he covers too much and is unable to finesse and sing sotto voce which is required for this role.
@spgtenor Youthful, but it sounds off the voice. You can barely hear him in the beginning. Caruso was the archetypical Nemorino in his day, and he was a dramatic tenor!
@cfreetenor - I believe this is taken from a live concert, so the audio recording isn't the best - it's difficult to hear the orchestra in the beginning as well.
Blake is meticulous about his approach and study to opera. I'm not positive, but my guess is that he was singing the original libretto, and then it was changed after opening night, and that's the one we usually hear. Does anybody here know?
I am a Blakian. i only find here that the Non quiedo at 3:50, using Blake's characteristic technique for pulling off fast phrases with embellishment, mught be too much, here. Usuaaly tenors have a horrible time with this particular phrase, Blake, does not at all, but a little more legato versus the machine gun execution, would have been terrific. Yes? No? Well, it's my o pinion!
BLAKE ES Y SERA UNICO. gracias otra vez
It is a PITY because Nemorino is Leggiero territory, best suited for that voice. It is not the bawling that Pavarotti sang, but the gentle and elegant lines of Rockwell Blake. Even another lyric, Kraus, sang it superbly.
I cannot agree more! Kraus was elegant and immensely moving in the role! And you are absolutely right about the lines! That's what I like too, gentle and elegant lines, not belted notes.
Genova, 1990. (y momentos).
Wow! This is the first time I've heard Rocky sing this and it's by far the best version of this aria I've heard. I've never been a fan of Pavarotti's version, just not the right voice type, but this one truly captures the beauty and expressiveness of this Romanza. It's great how he takes out the vibrato and leans into certain notes with sensuality instead of just typical "operatic style singing". Rossini would be proud of the tenor he always envisioned.
Did I say Rossini? I meant Donizetti. Anyway, any composer who wanted an opera singer that didn't just shout would love this interpretation, simply sublime.
Well... Pavarotti has never been an exponent of Bel Canto. His approach has always been "Belt and sing", what saved him was his beautiful voice. But as I said above, ALfredo Kraus and Rockwell Blake OWNED this Aria, Pavarotti merely visited it from time to time.
Actually, he has. I was with the Asheville Lyric Opera and Rockwell Blake was our Count of Almaviva. This was... around 2002, I think, or 2001. He was in great shape and in great voice, he made the role his.
Gah. PLEASE forgive me. It must be the hour, I thougth you were talking about Rocky singing Almaviva, not Nemorino. My bad. It is indeed a shame if he never sang this role.
so many critics on 'comments'.... wonder how many of these can carry a tune in a paper bag?? mam-ones!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Saludos.

great voice!! i dont care much for some of the liberties he took, and the weird vowel change he kept doing at the end, but very emotional.

Merci, merci

I'm still trying to get my head around Rocky singing Nemorino at all! Wonder how he sounded in the rest of the opera.
This is absolutely beautifully sung.

The furtiva lagrima was en encore during a concert. I don't think he ever sang the whole role... unfortunately!!!

Wow...I didn't think he would sing an aria like that (an so much Pavarotti aria)...and he sings it so nice, problably the way Donizetti intended it!
