this is the only sketch i remeber from the fist of fun show, loved it then , love it now haha :)
i think i was only about 14-15 when it was on TV, but when i finally learned to drive about 5 years later, all i could think about during lessons was this fucker haha :P
What year was this on TV? The only things I remember are Stewart Lee in one episode talking about having the same face as a woman's husband who was driving the same car as him and Richard Herring with Robbie Williams' face painted on his chest and Robbie Williams was advertising watercress while eating it with his bellybutton mouth.
This is very true. Though I only posted as I felt I should clarify the major points for the hard of reading ;o) it seemed to have left them mystified.
I know your comments are over a year old but I have to say something, your level of defensiveness is mind boggling, the whole point in the comment was only having met one, that was why it was said, as a joke, maybe not funny, but you missed the point.
By actually behaving as the streotype poked fun at in the sketch you have made yourself seem a little silly, in fact i think to argue over the internet as much as you did implies this sketch really got to you psychologically. Which is strange.
I did enjoy the clip, honestly, it was funny. And Sally Phillips is great. But, it certainly had the cringe factor for me, because I know that there are aspects of truth in some of the sketch. The funniest bit was the rolling about in money, I wish I made enough to do that.
i know janis. i wish i could roll around in paper money just like him. i tried rolling around in loose change but its not the same really!! and i would LOVE to be able to drive a digger and i would love to drive all those specialised trucks that you see at airports, have one parked outside the house!!
My, 'Janisyogababe', aren't you a glutton for punishment. To describe 1 half of the 90's most influential comedy outfit (albeit the slightly-overweight, marginally-less talented, Somerset half of the duo) as 'a completely (no need for the -ly by the way) load of crap' that's apparently 'painful...to watch' whilst writing what looks like a THESIS on said video, seems to me to highlight a deeper, internal conflict or confusion that, possibly needs resolving. Have you considered taking up knitting?
"Yes I do, but may I remind you, this is a sketch, its supposed to be ironic, and for the more weak minded of you, and I do include you this this category, it's fiction, it's not real, it's all pretend."
Seriously now, shut the fuck up. I think everyone here realises that it's fiction. We came here to watch an amusing Lee and Herring sketch. Instead, we found that, and a bland woman trying to validate her awful life. Go away. Go far away. Go. Please.
Billkillman, I think you've hit the nail on the head. This is nothing but a pathetic attempt by an insecure imbecile of a woman, desperate to convince herself that being a driving instructor is an occupation somehow deserving of our respect and admiration. To everyone else, of course, it just shows that she has no marketable skills other than the ability to drive. Lee and Herring can at least make people laugh; all Janisyogababe can do is whine about her miserable life on an Internet forum.
Well talking to myself is better than talking to some of you. Thanks, I know I did that, I actually answered my own message, what a silly girl, that made me laugh out loud, but seriously, let's get back to the sketch, it was very funny, I love sally philips, have you heard her in Clare in the Community?

Please remember this everyone, this is a joke. Take a look, he is even on the wrong side of the road. It's all a load of Bollocks for a joke. As a professional driving instructor, it's painful for me to watch this as it is a completely load of crap.
hey janis calm down its only comedy. but he makes a good point about some instructors. they can be rude to the learner driver who is usually very nervous and they always insist on more and more lessons cos they want to line their own pockets and not cos they really feel that the person who is taking instruction really needs the lessons.
Yes, he does make a good comment, and I agree, there are some people like those portrayed, that is why I find it painful to watch. But do read all my comments in the spirit is which I wrote them, that of information sharing. Calm? I could not do this job if I were not calm. Panic and stress are killers in this job. If I patronized MY pupils like this guy does, I would have none - as it happens, I have a waiting list. QED.
okay janis i understand. no probs. do u teach people to drive vans trucks etc or just cars. i once had lessons in forklift truck driving. that was fun!!!
No probs, it is my intention to get to drive as many different things as possible, like a truck, or a skidoo, or a tank. I have already driven a few things on my list, and have flown a small plane, so that I may experience being a learner myself. It was scary, but well worth it. Next time, it 's a JCB at Digger World. Ha! Can't wait.
Yes I do, but may I remind you, this is a sketch, its supposed to be ironic, and for the more weak minded of you, and I do include you this this category, it's fiction, it's not real, it's all pretend.
No professional driving instructor gives lessons that are not required. But some pupils think they know better than their instructor.
Funnily enough these tend to be the pupils that have a naturally poor aptitude for driving.
Rather than give them lessons that THEY feel they don't need, I always tactfully suggest that if they disagree with my opinion, then they should find another instructor.
This leaves me more time to devote to my sensible pupils, who nearly always pass first time. Get it?
i see your point mraverage. but the people who feel they dont need the lessons and go out and fail are probably the ones that dont practice enough in their own spare time. when i was preparing for my test i spent my free time driving and driving and driving.
Thanks for the support mraverage88 - it's nice to get someone on our side. Sadly, so many people who think they can drive, also think they can somehow comment on our professional careers. They don't seem to realise just how much training and professional development we put in, and how hard we work in this competitive industry, only to get bitchy comments from these inexperienced and inadequate 'drivers' and pretend 'know-alls'. Cheers
Please define the term "idiot". With several, no, not several, many, yes, that is the right word, many attributes to the contrary, I shall smile my tolerant smile when I read the rubbish you and your like, put out. Perhaps I should also say that as an antagonist, you are not even close to ruffling any feather.
I'm telling you an idiot because you provided scientific proof of it in the form of your comments in this thread. What kind of inbred reptilian brain would you need to have to think this video was serious and not comedy? Why don't you put your mongoloid face through a plate glass window and spare us all your dim-bulb attempts at comments. Painful to watch? Your linguistic diarrhea is painful to read, you witless idiot.
Now go shout at mraverage88, because he is saying a similar thing. This is supposed to be a discussion, not a fight, you really ought to get things into perspective, and just look on the bright side. Everytime you come onto this site to read our messages, you get another chance to laugh at this sketch, see, it's a win win situation. Calm down dear it's only a bit of fun.
Your response to my calling you an idiot is an appeal to the opinions of another driving instructor who is incapable of spelling the word "average" correctly?
Talk about shooting fish in a barrel. Actually, that's a rather ironic analogy, seeing as you've demonstrated that driving instructors apparently have intelligence roughly equal to that of a fish.
Ha ha! you two would make a great double act. Now that I have been successfully bullied on the internet, I shall retire - and leave you two to get it together over a different victim. Just because I happened to have an opinion which differed from yours! Shame on you both - such children, and no respect for anyone else's view. Tut!
If it takes you having to maintain some kind of wounded martyr facade to actually stop stating the obvious ('it's fiction!') and leave, then so be it.
There you go again, not reading the thread. You are so tiring, it hurts my brain to think down to your level. You are so thick that you don't know how to have a discussion, it just turns into a vicious attack at anything said. I understand that there is a popular name for people like you, you are a cyber troll, yep, that's right, lives in the dark and only comes out to bite people.
LOve this; had a BSM instructor who was utterly utterly useless. Only after I'd given him the boot (and got a friend to teach me!) did I find out that lots of BSM intructors are trainees, and that YOU are part of their training. So you're teaching them to teach you to learn to drive!
All driving instructors take continual professional development. What you are referring to is a qualified instructor, qualified to teach, qualified by the government, and are undertaking further instruction and will have to take a final exam before they can go on the register. They are called PDIs and although qualified to teach, understand, as we do, that there is always more to learn.
Personally I think this is a very accurate picture of all driving instructors everywhere. In my time I have had about three and they are all like this. Patronizing wankers who meticulously know the tread in their tyres but not much else. I loved that whole bit about 'a car is a dangerous weapon, even more dangerous than the bomb dropped on hiroshima', my driving instructors always went on with stories like that. Imagine what it must be like to be in control of such power...
So you had 'about three' driving instructors? I guess that means you knew better than all of them. But if you are so knowledgeable about driving, why didn't you simply buy a car, or borrow one, and take your driving test?
So you know every driving instructor, everywhere. Perhaps the three instructors you had are seen as wankers by you, because you are one. In my experience as a Professional Driving Instructor of many years and with a very good reputation in my city, I object to your narrow minded opinion, based on little or no knowledge. You were probably being told what not to do, and you did not like it, there are people out their who do not like taking instruction - are you one of those.

It appears to me that you are one of those people with a 'bad attitude', the type which gives hardworking instructors a bad name, because you are a bad pupil, rather than the other way around. Are you a guy by any chance, do you have your license now, is your car black, have your a large engine, do you have spoilers, skirts, shiny bits on your car, and go faster stripes. The car is a dangerous weapon, but the driver is the git that pulls the trigger, hello trigger!
I can assure you that driving instructors do not want to give pupils more lessons than they need! There are too many new pupils waiting to start, and frankly it would be very difficult to teach what didn't need teaching. Trouble is, some unintelligent pupils think they're ready for a test when in fact they're nowhere near ready, but they just can't accept how slow they are to pick things up. If you don't trust your instructor's opinion, change instructors. Simple!
How naive! Plenty of instructors DO give more lessons than needed to keep taking money off the pupil. Many are desperate for work. Instructors are not infallible and not all pupils are 'unintelligent'. Many instructors were attracted by the 'new career with no qualifications other than a driving licence and £30k per year income' adverts. Likewise many pupils are A-level or university students. So when it comes to being 'unintelligent' I know which group might just have a head start.
Oh real mature. Like I said, there are plenty of bad instructors out there. People who can't accept the truth and resort to childish insults, for example. You can see where 'no qualifications' is having its effect.
No really, grow up and smell the roses. There ARE bad instructors. Anyone who believes otherwise has my sympathy. The cheapo-cheapos have got to make money somehow and fast-tracking pupils ain't the way to do it. Try taking a reality pill.
Please read the comments properly before responding. Obviously not all pupils are unintelligent. But some are, and these tend to be the ones who will not accept that they are nowhere near ready to take a driving test, are naturally poor drivers, and can't seem to accept advice. They are often also the ones who have several instructors, whereas most people need only one.
Ha, we had a pupil recently, who would not take instruction and did not want the instructor to do his job and tell her what she needed to know, there are briefings to give, and goals to attain and feedback to do, but she would not accept that, so she dumped the instructor, silly cow!
I want to point out that the advertisements which say "earn £30K a year plus a car" "leave the 9 to 5, work your own hours" etc, are in my opinion (as an ADI) are misleading. Firstly, I turnover £30K but that is before business running expenses, and the 9 - 5 becomes the 9 - 9 when you are self employed. Phew! But, when you are good at it, as I am, people seek you out and clamber for your expertise As I said before, the bad instructors spoil it for everyone else, and they give it up.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You think that just having a driving license is enough to be a driving instructor? You are in cloud cuckooland. Driving instructors have to study and pass a very stringent set of exacting examinations, and regular check tests be senior examiners. Sure there are bad driving instructors, just like there are bad dentists, and bad students, but sweeping generalizations are not helpful. The bad instructors fall by the wayside, and give up because they are not good enough and can't make it.

What, are you saying he can't even drive!?! I can drive. I can drive

No really, don' be a twat.
