  • But you can use same technique

  • Wouldn't work on large size hole drywall mud has enough strength for small patches but for a hole 1' or greater it's best to support back of patch

  • lol...it has to be a neighbor kid...thanx again

  • @eyekandy7 Yes, in fact i'm doing it right now! It just takes a larger knife and a little more time.

  • would this method work with a larger size hole in the wall?

  • Hey Bob, We call that the Tic-Tac-Toe Method down here in Texas.

Just make sure the inner Square is slightly smaller than your Hole.

As your cutting just think Tic- Tac-Toe.

    Great Video My Friend !

  • @TomSawyerPainting Love it! Easy to remember! +++Bob

  • Cool workshop! Short but informative... save time hiring a contractor for small job.

  • thanks alot!!!

  • brilliant.

  • How much would this all be and where can I find the materials??

    I got pissed and kicked a hole in my wall >.> . . .

  • i feel so damn stupid after watching this video..how easy was this

  • I have little holes (more like dents)that Don't go to deep ( like an 8th of an inch) made by plastic bbs, can I just sand the m and the area and fill with drywall Compound?

  • @trainz222 Yes +++Bob

  • Nice California patch

  • does this also work for rectangular holes that were broken by crazy ex girlfriends?

  • This vid is really useful, especially since I put like 5 holes like the one in the vid in the walls of my house.

  • i got pissed and punched a hole in the wall, how much would all of this cost

  • Does anybody else think this guy sound like Adam Carolla?

  • @HANAMICHYTensai10 I looked that guy up and NO!!!!! I do not look or sound like him! At least I hope not+++Bob

  • shit I got a 3X3 size hole in the wall. Would that technique work for that?

  • @Apocalypse487

    3 inchx3inch yes, 3footx3foot no +++Bob

  • its a blow-out patch

  • i've learned more from these do it yourself vids on youtube than i did 7 yrs of doing construction with my father scared the crap out of me at the end of the vid though you just jumped out of nowhere

  • i just blew a hole in my uncles room just put paper and patch on it

  • Great video.

I learned this technique about 40 years ago. It was referred to as a California Hot Patch.

  • @VinnieSutra I have been hearing that alot!+++Bob

  • Those subtitles are terrible haha

  • Good Job Bob. Should have used a steel patch in case your dumb ass friend comes over again. Hahaha...... seriously. Excellent video.

  • Excellent Video - I would have never thought of leaving the paper on the front of the wallpaper patch to secure it. Makes alot of sense! Going to view your other videos.

  • nice vid, seen this before but it remind me that for small holes no need to buy those 8" square mesh patches ,this is better alternative...but what would be the biggest hole you can patch with this technique?

  • I wasnt really sure on what to do or how to do it,,,,but after reading those subtitles,,,I know excatly what to do! Thanks!

  • this is probably the best technique ive seen. you might want to fix the captions though.

  • Are you using some speach-to-text software? It's the best part of the video! Or did you outsource to transcription to engrish?

Gently place your passion in the hall.

  • Cool idea

  • OMG...I tried to look at the video...but kept laughinh at the subtitles..too funny

  • awesome tip thanks

  • Excellent video - would never have thought of leaving the paper on! genius!

Has anyone noticed the hilarious subtitles for this video???

  • is it better to do this or use those mesh patches and then put compound over that?

  • is it better to do this or use those mesh patches and then put compound over that?

  • I accidently made a hole in my wall and I want to fix it. But I dont have these materials

  • LOL @ subtitles, helpful video however.

  • LOL @ subtitles, helpful video however.

  • LOL @ subtitles, helpful video however.

  • How large of a hole can this method repair?

  • The old Hot patch! nice< but for a hole that size I would have just used a piece of tape (w/ quickset) this is a great way to patch a hole 1 or 2 foot wide, also to get a smoother finish use a 10 inch knife.

  • After many years in the construction industry , I have never seen this way of repair.

It saves srcews and timber or metal being used as a grounding.

  • Thanks, this is just what I was looking for!

  • Bigpappa has a good suggestion. While the repair in this video is good, it would be a pretty noticeable repair due to the doubled up layers of paper between the patch and the wall. I prefer to hold my patch against the wall in its final position, then scribe with a knife completely through the patch paper and the paper on the wall. Afterwards, remove the paper from the wall and the patch paper will fit perfectly inside it. This is the only way to make the patch completely unnoticeable.

  • I understand what you are saying ,however drywall compound shrinks and the joint between the patch and the wall may loosen during drying process+++Bob Shrinking behind paper surface would actually pull paper tighter to surface.

  • also, make sure to put a stopper on the wall by the floor so it doesn't happen again!

  • Thank you so much for this video!

  • Thank you so much for this video!!!

  • like the idea but this way is to much time, if you go to home depot get 5 mins, smooth set and a roll of fiber glass mesh tape and in 45 mins. you are ready, you just have to do similar steps, (exept. the drywall and the 24 hrs time) ha ha ha

  • i would also opt for the mesh and quikset, and definitly install door stops. but it is a good video. we call it a california patch

  • Nice

  • One more improvement over last idea.

Instead of ripping off patch paper. You instead

trace your patch paper on the wall it will fill.

Scribe the wall paper (wall that will be patched) and pull the paper off that. Then apply mud and put patch in straight flush with paper surface tension integrity greatly increased. Nit picky I know, but hey why not try for a Un-detectable patch?

  • Ahhh, I really like this technique!!!! HOWEVER what if, you

    1) Made your patch.

    2) Did your initial application.

Then instead of muding over the patch paper, you instead, rip off the top paper leaving the patch square and apply more mud to fill cracks. Then since there is no patch paper (as thin as it is) feathering not needing, only fine surface sanding.. Critics with a fine eye would never see the smallest bulge because there is not one.

  • thank you very much

  • Excellent way to patch holes ! I have used this method hundred's of times.

  • The hole that I have in my wall is 15x bigger than that hole. Where do I get peice of drywall that big to fix my wall? If I were to follow these directions from this video, wouldn't it look obvious that the whole was there because I have little bumps on my wall rather than a smoothe surface

  • A building supply store should have large sheets of drywall. If you have a textured wall, I would suggest you do a search for "how to do a knockdown patch"

  • The good old Newfie patch

  • Thanks for a well-designed video.

  • Thank you so much for the idea! I just moved into a new house where the previous owner had "repaired" a couple of holes from what looked like a towel rod being ripped out of the wall by smearing copious amounts of spackle in the holes. With your help, my repair will look much better. Thanks!

  • that was a brilliant idea. thanks for sharing.

  • This is better than the Barrystick!

  • i have a big problem, i decided to punch the wall next to a stud D: what can i do :o?

  • I punched a hole in the drywall and the piece that I punched in remains inside the wall. It is still however fairly intact, do I discard this piece or will it be useful as a "scrap" piece of drywood? And if so, is there a need for a patch at all?

  • TY G!

  • If I'm painting over wallpaper and there is a rip in the wallpaper how would i patch over the rip easily?

  • I have a few holes in my walls but I'm not sure if it's dry wall. One is on a corner and is now showing metal. The other is under a window, but looks like wood behind it. Any ideas? do you have an email I could send pictures to for further advice?

  • HELP NEEDED!

i have a hole in wall(dont know if its even a dry wall).

after i final sand and paint, how would i put a texture onto the wall?

the surrounding wall have a texture.

  • If you have a textured wall don't paint untill after texturing! And only if surrounding wall is painted. That being said there are many different types of textures and techniques to achieve them. You need to be much more specific with description before I can begin to advise.+++Bob

  • They sell a spray for that. I bought one at Home Depot. Use it, wait 2-3 minutes before it dries then use the putty knife to smear it in patterns.

  • 3:36 scared the shit out of me xD

  • Are you O.K? Sorry about that, was new to editing program,at the time, this was the first video I ever made much less edited. Hopefully I have improved a bit since then!+++Bob

  • can you patch my eardrum after that huge volume increase? lol! just kidding though . thanks for the great tip. i will put it to good use!

  • @andersmillerjord haha lol same happend to me.

  • Brilliant- this beats my method of much profanity then framing and patching. Tried this with holes left from a hook that had something wayyyy too heavy placed on it. Easy. Thank you.

  • "In our next video, we'll show you 10 ways to kill the neighbor kids."

  • this method seems so easy! is this as strong as using fiberglass tape method? cant wait for a hole in sheetrock so i can try this!

  • In Florida we call this a 'Hot Patch'

  • in colorado we call this california patch

    why? i don't know..

  • Bob, you are the first "Real Pro" I have seen on you tube. You did every thing the way I do it . Keep it up my man !!!

  • If you spot me making a serious mess-up do not hesitate to let me know! I am trying to make these as useful as possible. Thanks+++Bob

  • WoW, didn't even think about leaving paper on one side. Expert Village watch out!

  • i punched a hole in my wall last night and thanks to your vid i can fix it

  • nm, i didn't watch the whole vid first

  • it is easier to cut a square patch then trace it on the wall then cut the hole, you don't have to worry as much about squareness and such. But what you were patching looked like hittin it with some spackle would have done it

  • My goodness the neighbourhood kid? What about your own kids.

  • They go to the neighbors house to do reckless things +++Bob

  • good vid.

  • thanks for the video! It will help me alot in my home improvement.

  • Great video! I like the overlapping paper method; it should save a lot of time compared to taping around the patch. But a doorknob ding is probably one of the places where I'd be inclined to add some re-enforcement (a 1X3 under the patch and about 8 screws would probably be enough. When the patch is complete, I'd put a rubber bumper over it. Even if the patch is strong enough to withstand another hit, the bumper would probably be needed to protect to doorknob.

  • Great vid, just what I needed.

  • Glad to hear it! Any questions don't hesitate to ask +++Bob

  • Thanks it was brief and to the point and informative.

  • For larger holes,I posted a video response to this video directly below this one check it out+++Bob

  • As long as the sheet is still solidly anchored it can be patched. Sorry to hear about your bad luck.+++Bob

  • Does this technique work on a larger hole?

I had some vandalism, and they knocked a sizable hole, about the size of a human head, roughly 2x2 in the ceiling. Can I patch it or should I replace the whole sheet?

  • Comment above+++Bob

  • this video is very helpful. i recently punched a hole in my wall due to frustration and i instantly regretted it. after watching this video i know what to do whenever this happens again. thanks

  • Yes,control your temper, DEFINITLY!+++Bob p,s. There are studs in that wall that could cause a trip to the hospital, far more expensive than a drywall patch.

  • Thanks for this video!

  • You are welcome+++Bob

  • Hi i'm from Denmark.. I really like your vedios, i'm a diy FREAK love to do it all my self... but what i wanted to say was please cep the Audio at the same level if not in all vedio's in the same vedio it's a MUST!! but good job :) have a nice day..

  • This was the first video I made.I hope you have seen some improvement in video and audio since. This video has a pretty good search results and alot of people can find it. If I remake it it would be two years or more before as many people can find it like they can today.+++Bob

  • DUDE YOU ARE AMAZING. Thank you so mcuh for making this video. Me and my brother did the most retarded thing possible. Well he did. it ended with him putting his foot through the dry wall.

thanks to you my dad wont kill me =]

  • Always good to stay on DADS good side+++Bob

  • Agreed.

  • thanks for making this video

  • You are very welcome!+++Bob

  • i am that neighbor kid v_v

  • I will send my kids to play at your mom and dads house next time LOL +++Bob

  • yeah looks like it might work better than my handfull of spackle method haha nice video!

  • Simply excellent video. Thank you. A huge help.

  • Glad to be of service!+++Bob

  • man alive... just screw a small piece of wood in behind the hole ... it's a much better fix.

  • Then get out the tape and put 4 pieces on all overlapping mind you and rub them all together as smooth as possible and the continue. Not a whole lot simpler on the finishing end+++Bob

  • I agree with Archive. Structurally, you'll end up with a significantly stronger patch by using a piece of wood that is slightly longer and narrower than the patch hole. Insert the wood into the hole, attach patch with screw into it and also put screws directly above and below the patch area so they all attach to the wood. The patch will be as strong as the surrounding drywall, while with your method you could easily press on the wall with your fingers and compromise the repair.

  • Only when its wet once dry its integrity is fine!+++BOB

  • what must be done if hole is much larger

  • Check out my "UNIQUE USE FOR RECIPROCATING SAW" video it might help+++Bob

  • never seen it done that way before. You can also use mesh tape it the hole isn't to big right?

  • great method...will use this!

  • Thanks HomeRemodelWorkshop, you've saved my rent deposit!

  • That right there is reason enough to make these videos! Thanks+++Bob

  • this is great .

  • how much does it cost to get a hole repaired that size ? cus like my fams outa the country and theyll be back on the 20th! and i gotta get the wall repaired asap!! lol

  • I fixed some in my friends house before learning how to do it with scrap like you do, I just duct taped the hole up and then used compound over it to make it look professional, it looks ok, but you could throw a dart through it if you wanted to.

  • That was great! I can't wait to try it. I have one of those door knob holes, too.

  • Oh my god, I appreciate this, you are a life saver, but is their anything else I can use other then a keyhole saw.

  • Anything that will cut drywall. Say an old knife, if you're patient and careful. Just go slow and steady over the same cut until you're through.

  • You will probably need a razor knife to make the patch.you can use that same tool to VERY SLOWLY, A LITTLE AT A TIME.SQUARE UP THE HOLE.+++ Bob Sorry so slow in getting back untill I saw tanerofies response somehow I overlooked your message sorry

  • my temper made me punch a hole in my wall this helped alot thanks!!!!!!!!!

  • me to!!

  • lol me too but i was drunk

  • haha me too

i put a poster over it for now

  • i'm glad i'm not the only one

  • me to except i got grounded

  • My son and his temper knocked a hole in my wall today. Since I am an independent, highly educated (read single) woman I needed this video more than you can imagine. Thanks Bob and come for dinner some time!

  • very goooood tip! I just made a hole with baseball on my dry wall and I think this tip will be good enough to fix it! thanks!

  • Should do the trick, now why are you throwing a baseball in the house? What am I thinking its winter time of course!+++Bob

  • square peg round hole

  • WOW...I always buy those "repair patches"...but I'm cheap and this is going to save me $5 a hole :D

  • Wow, ive been doing drywall for awhile now and would never think of something like this. Thanks clever Bob!

  • Glad to hear it! I think you will like it.+++Bob

  • thanks....

  • this is my favorite drywall application instructional video!!!!!!

  • Actually the holes in my walls were made by me. I got a bit of a temper.

I might need to watch the video a few more times so as not to miss a step. I'll save this video to my favorites for future reference. Thanks for making it.

  • you too???LOL

  • thank u dude i just made $100 easy repair

  • Don't you owe me a cold-one? Just kidding you are very welcome!===Bob

  • Thank you very much :)

You just saved me an argument with my wife! lol

  • Just about anything that avoids an argument with my wife is worthwhile doing! LOL===Bob

  • Very well done. Next time get the dudes to put a door stopper on the stud!

  • dude this is the first time i seen a repair like this done. i have the same kinda holes in just about every room in the house, im gonna try this one out. thanks for the easy repair tips.

  • Let me know how it worked for you===Bob

  • to much ceremony. Two coats of durabond over the hole and it done. This is good for larger patches.

  • No tape or patching material at all? Sounds like a call back to me .Thanks for the post===Bob

  • Brilliant....i'll remember this!

  • Excellent video. Thanks.

  • Excellent video. Thanks.

  • hey Bob ,

i was wondering if this method would still work for a hole that is about 4x5 inches,do you think it would still work?

    thanks!

  • Yes it will!=== Bob Up to about 10x10 max

  • Hello Bob, water overflowing from my bathroom upstairs caused some water to come through my celing downstairs. Never broke through but there is a stain there about 1foot by 1 foot that feels slightly moist. Will these instructions also work with this spot in my celing?

  • 12x12 is a little large for this type patch.I would advise cutting stud to stud like I do in my "UNIQUE USE FOR SAWZALL"video. Also once completely dry, rescrew surrounding area to make sure drywall did not sag away from floor joist.Prime with stain kill paint before final coat. HOPE THIS HELPS===BOB

  • It does indeed! Thank you so much for the reply!

  • Hi. I have a hole about the same size in your video, but behind it is where a section of stair railing mounts to the drywall. If I patch the hole as you did in the video, will it be strong enough to drill in to and accept the weight of the railing again? The railing is about 8 feet, and mounts to the wall in in 3 places (top, middle, bottom). Thanks for your help!

  • A typical railing bracket mounts into a wall stud if you can remove it and place it on the closest wall stud that would be best.If that cannot be done then I would cut the patch from stud to stud and nail a 2x4 between for an anchoring point.Hope this helps===Bob

  • Home Depot should have everything you need.Mud is actually drywall topping .Cost for a six inch mudding knife you can expect to pay 5/6 dollars razor Knife 3/4 dollars small amount drywall and topping compound 7/8 dollars. This should be enough to do several small repairs as described in video.Hope this helped===Bob

  • ok im a serious novice in this area, caused some holes at home and i needa fix em. 1st question, can i get all these materials at any hardware store? like home depot or something?

2nd question- when you say mud, is that something you can buy as well at the store? dry wall as well.

3rd- can i get a ballpark figure as to how much it'll cost? thanks a lot

  • Thanks for the video!

  • We Call This A Hot Patch

    used them everday

    until borderjumpers ruined the economy.

must be easy to bid jobs lower than me when u dont pay taxes.

or workers comp insurance 4 that matter

  • So you took the time to turn a home repair video into a nutty rant about immigration? You are what is referred to locally as 'El Douche'

  • Great info I have done alot of personal work on my homes and I had patched up a couple of holes made from doorknobs and I had never thought doing the repair like that. That is great, no tape and no screws. Cant wait to try it out some day. Thanks

  • YOUR A COWBOY M8!!!!!!!!!

  • Great informative video, but adjust your audio levels! That part at the end made me jump!

  • If your wondering why the finished patch looks different than the rest of the wall, don't forget to sand smooth and then texture. Best way to texture a small hole like this is with the cans of texture spray you can buy at the hardware store. Practice on a side piece before using it on the wall so you can get a match. When dry don't forget to prime before you paint.

    Good Luck
