  • very good. Since I play bass guitar I often hum the notes one octave lower ... is that acceptable.?

  • I play guitar and I learn songs by ear and do solo guitar playing and this helped me to find the key of any song That way I can play the notes in that key over the chords in that key thank you!

  • I got a question after you find the key how do you find the song melodie in order to play the whole song?

  • you are good! congrats! I play by ears but I didn't notice that there is a dominant note. congrats!

  • love michael jackson!!!!!....luv man in d mirror!!!

  • awesome best teacher in the world

  • I'm still having difficulty with this. I just need some more practice.

  • Brother, you are such an inspiration. May God bless you...

  • These PDF files you created helped me so much to understand the foundations you set. Keep up the great work!

  • Hey Jermaine,

I signed up and everything but still can't find the pdf files with the 12 minor chords.

  • @DJDannyBoy125 Its right there in the description of this video. Just click on it. Or if you're logged into our free lessons area, its right directly under the video. There's a link to click and it should open a new window where the pdf loads.

  • good video. informative. enjoyed it

  • Brilliant!

  • Hi I just saw u on hgtv

  • all guitarist are never comfortable at the sight of a piano :D

  • Best music lesson I've heard in my life. Thanks so much from the very deep of my heart! Thanks, it was immensely useful! God Bless.

  • Hey Jermaine! Great video! Very helpful. Thank you so much. All the best! :-)

  • this lesson was very important to me. thank you so much.

but there's a thing i can't really understand.. the minor chords.

after i found the key, how can i form the minor chord? i can i know what is the minor chord?

i'm trying to learn music by myself, i never had a teacher and until now i think i'm doing pretty good, but that's one of my doubts if you could answer me i would be totally grateful. thank you so much anyway, for this amazing lesson.

  • @fadetoblack123cu Please go to the link under the video. There is a free pdf guide I added that has all 12 minor chords and tells you what to play for which prospective keys. It'll help. But the concept is, pick the minor chord that puts YOUR KEY on top in root position. If you think the key of the song is G, what minor chord in regular root position puts G on top? that would be C minor -- C Eb G (notice G is the highest note of this chord). If you think the key is F, choose Bb minor to test.

  • @hearandplay i'm not receiving nothing in my email box. :S

  • Such a blessing. Thanks!

  • thanks sir, this was amazingly simple but most helpful, believe me as soon as finances allow i am ordering more of your lessons

  • thank you!

  • 10/10

  • Hey thanks for the new skill! You did a great job presenting it and I understand it now. Thanks~

  • Thanks a lot for these tips. Very helpful for someone who isn't a classically trained musician. I'm a hip hop producer trying to improve my ear so I can add music to existing samples and your tricks are making things a lot easier and more enjoyable!

  • Thank-you so much! This was soooooooo good. Well thank-you for reaching me in Zambia...God bless you

  • What if the key of the song was Minor? Then do we still use the Minor Chord Litmus test? For example if the song was in C minor, do I still test C against A flat and F (which forms F minor with C on top)?

  • So helpful!! I wish I could "like" more than once lol

  • Thank you so much! Glad I found you and your free videos:) This really helped:)

  • So I'm making a song for a friend of mine. The chords are G, Em, C, and D. Is this song in the key of G?

  • @Gibsonlespaul58yeah While those chords belong to a few keys, because of how they're arranged, yes, G major is the key. But if all else fails, have you used my humming technique and your ear and does it sound like the "common tone?" Have you tested it with the minor chord trick? The answer will be obvious. Thanks.

  • Really good video :) Thanks a million man! :D

  • thanks, very educational

  • 0:31 - 0:48 ... awesome

  • This is incredibly knowledge and instruction. Thanks buddy.

  • Just learned something from you

Thank you very much for the lesson

Jesus just opened another door in my musical education

  • This dude is blessed

  • I might reconsider trading in my keyboard now

  • thank you. I should've used this method a long time ago!

  • i just finished listening to your Hear & Play 702 series..

  • I just finally understood how to do this, I haven't yet understood why to do it, or how it works, but I will put it into action soon, thanks Jermaine!

  • thank you so much,,i am a begginer playing mostly by ear,,byt learning scales right now,,and you helped me a lot

  • why do we use a minor chord as opposed to a major chord to test if were mistakingly humming the third or fifth?

  • @BlackEyeDog012 U r not testing with the minor chord of the REAL key. You're testing with the minor chord that puts that note on top in root position. So if you think the key is C, you're not testing with a C minor (or major) chord for that matter. That's not what we're doing. We're making sure you haven't mistakenly picked the "third" or "fifth" by accident. The only way to do that is to take an F minor chord (F Ab C) and test your "C" against the other two notes, Ab and F. If C wins, u r good.

  • This video really helped me, that trick with checking the minor was amazing! You really helped me grow as a pianist, please keep posting videos.

  • can u kindly do a tutorial for that name is jesus by yolanda adams seems as if everybody is running from it thanks

  • This is absolutely brilliant my friend. Im a keen Amatuer and Do singalong type events at our local club for charity. nobody explained to me how to get keys as clearly before. I used your trick and many people thought I had taken lessons as I found there keys quickly. You are very generous Thank You

  • Really really helpfull!! So nice.. But does ne1 know how I know if a song is in Minor or Mayor??

  • @boudewyn Major sounds happy, minor sounds sad. Just listen to the chords of the song, look 'em up and see ;)

  • wow thanks alot man great video, this was extremely helpful!!!! awesome job man thanks a ton!!

  • Yay I'm not tone death!! I hummed and found all the right keys. The only one that slightly threw me was the Whitney song (I heard an A flat) so I was very close. Thanks for this lesson. Great video!!

  • this is great. i am a dj looking to key my records. this is wicked helpful. this will lead me to absolute pitch eventually. :)

  • Thank you very much! Glad to say I learned how to do it with my guitar since I don't have a keyboard. Really appreciate it...

  • "If you ain't in the ballpark... ya tonedeaf." That's awesome. Great lesson!

  • Thank you! I'm still learning, I appreciate this tutorial.

  • Wow! I'm not a musician but this is something I have always wanted to know,

and really I gave up on it (just not blessed with an ear for music). But I just happened to

come across this video and I got every last one right. God did bless me with that,

and thank you for allowing him to use you.

  • Jermaine this is the first time Ive seen one of your video's. I am trying to figure out what keys Im singing my songs in and your video came up in the search. I got 4 out of the I think 6 songs so Im very excited that I saw this. Thank you so much. You were a pleasure to watch.

  • Amazing lesson! Thank you so much! Really helped!

  • Thank you so much for the lesson! It really helped me a lot!

I just had one more question though. After finding the "key" or "common" note that you were talking about, how do we actually find out what the key of the song is? Is the "key/common" note the actual key of the whole song?

    Thanks once again! :)

  • Thank you so much! Your lesson was SO helpful! :)

  • Excellent ! thank you.

  • lol, i almost forgot how he was look like.. 21:40

  • how much did the keyboard cost?

  • Mike J. was geat!!!

  • i dont understand the minor chord trick

  • thanks man,i took a leap into my music theroy today

  • bro your the greatest :)

  • I suppose when you have the correct note, you just play the minor and major chord involving the note, this reveals the major or minor mode of the song....

  • Seems like a great, fool proof way to determine the key....I love it....

  • Thanks I just received GK 101,202,300,500 thanks I just need to understand the different chords in different keys

  • Jermaine ive spent a semester at my university majoring in music and since ive gotten here no one has been able to teach me to be able to find a key and u thought me how to find it in 30 mins...i cant thank you enough. im also a musician that play for my church. Playin strictly by ear on piano so i thank you because u helped me immensely. Thanks again and i look forward to your up and coming videos.

  • Thank you thank you , you just improved my piano playing by 90% thanks a lot.!!!!!!

  • Try Asian women **busizz4me.info**

  • GOD bless.

  • You're an Excellent teacher. I usually find the key as a Guitarist on the bass strings. And usually on the fifth dominant, Most of the times, I don't know how I really do it, But, I can always hear the bass.

But, Even when you're a reader, When I read the music, A lot of times it's not in the correct key, Sometimes "All the Things You Are" does a lot of 4ths as I recall.

    Great lesson

  • How is he able to put up a 34:16 min video?

  • Great lesson Jermaine, even fon non-english (good) speakers!!! Muchas gracias!!!

  • Those who Love God are patient and giving enough to be able to teach others/convey understanding. Well done Sir. Thank You!!! =)

  • AWESOME.... Thanks so much! I'm gonna use these tips. I'm new to playing for church during testimony services and it always takes me so long to figure out the key. By the time I figure it out, they've changed the song and the key. Thanks for the help!

  • Great lesson

  • HOLY COW!! I owe you so much!! this worked great My playing improved 1000% almost immediate THIS WORKS!!!

  • This was great... Helped me out so much... Wow, I'm blown away; now I can find the right key to the song... Previously, I would take the first note of the song, and wrongfully think that was what the key of the song was. I was only right about 50% of the time, this should take to at least being right about 99% of the time. Awsome video! Thanks again!
