I've never heard of an LED rotating beacon ... or do you mean they have LED light bars? It's amazing how in southern California so many police vehicles are still using just one red spot light, or old, sun damaged bars with rotating beacons that you can barely make out. Here in NY, some of the newest bars just about give people headaches or seizures!! Anyway, thanks for the reply
I noticed that some have a beacon of the same style...but in LED...what is the point of that? lol...cant they just move on and use lightbars like the rest of the US?
Never mind, found answer to the question reading further. Cannot get over how plain the cars are. Our cars (Atlanta) look like Christmas trees when lit up.
Retired cop here. Do have one question...what is the purpose of the stop sign on the hood. In 24 years of southern police work have never seen that before.
MSP, the cars are half assed, not the latest tech. That light on top is out of date and nostalgic, nostalgia has no place in law enforcement. They are money collectors, simply writing tickets and not much else. They like the plum job they have and the decent pay. But they need to do more around Detroit in particular. Lots of felons on the loose here. Oh! and there are a few racist on the force.
That light is pretty good. Although it may look "old" to some, it has excellent visibility on freeways, you can see them so far ahead of you. And thats what its there for...visibility so traffic doesnt hit whatever it may be protecting whether it be a car crash or traffic stop, it does its job providing safety.
@16goarmy Yep, they are installing red leds in the bubbles now. And in the times before lights, troopers would pull up along side a vehicle, and light up that sign, which commands the car to stop and pull over. Now its just there for history.
@JimmyMSP That's pretty cool that the old sign on the hood has been left there just to keep things consistent with how it was done "back in the day". Props for that, for real.
@fire214 Theres a couple of reasons. One, its tradition. Whenever you see it you think Michigan State Police, so they are keeping tradition. Another reason its kept is because it works well. There isnt anything wrong with it really... Its bright, gets the job done, so really no reason to switch to a full size. And lastly, the bubble has good aerodynamics. MSP is able to achieve higher speeds (not to high) because air rushes around the bubble when driving fast, where air hits a lightbar and stops
They are writing tickets to people who most likely deserve them. in metro detroit, they are traffic only, so thats what they do, write tickets, do crash reports, and protect the freeways. When you get to other parts of MI, they respond to normal radio calls just like any other police force. The guys up at Post 75 do a damn good job up there, serving the citizens of Roscommon county (i chose 75 because ive dealt with them before, im sure many if not all are great at what they do.)
Yes, they do patrol the streets of detroit along with DPD and Wayne CO Sheriff. Just like all my detroit pursuit recordings, its MSP patrolling city streets.
@Bmants , A big waste of money on my tax dollar, all cops need is a simple white toyota corolla with simple one light bar and police on the side in black letters !
To help clear up some of the questions: We switched from black to the blue in 1950 and the cars were dubbed "Blue Gooses" . The single bubble is a MSP signature item but we basically have them due to the cost of outfitting 1000 cars. Our chargers do NOT have a light bar and are all slicktops. The "STOP STATE POLCIE" hood light is from the early days before the advent of the rotating light. It is still used as another signature MSP item to show our deep history and sense of tradition.
I wanted to be A MSP Trooper but was told I have a felony conviction for a misdemeanor I committed in Texas. Wow!!!! But still got love for them anyways. Its all good I am getting ready to do the job in Dallas with The DPD.
From what i here, Troopers used to pull up alongside cars that they wanted to pull over and light up that sign. Right, it says stop, so the car would stop. But now, its just there for looks, and its a signature of MSP. Same with the Bubble Light. Apperently MSP isnt the MSP without those items
Actually, I believe the myth regarding the bubble light is that when police cars would get into crashes, if the impact was violent enough, it would rip off the light bar and cause a projectile hazzard and all the live wires would present fire and electricution hazzards, so MSP had all of their cars outfitted with the bubble light so that in the event of a crash, the light would present less of a hazzard.
Doesn't matter, I'm just telling WHY they use the bubble light. I believe you are correct, but some lights have higher voltage depending what they are and who they were made by. They usually dont have prisoner cages either because in a crash it increases the risk of a broken back.
MSP is the only PD I know to do that; they are a little superstitious or just protective of their officers..
whats the STOP board on the hood for????

as much as you hate cops you need to go to your gov. about hiring more officers.. right now 99% of law enforcement agencies are understaffed

Someone please answer....MSP uses other colors for thier cars beside blue? I saw different colors in this video. Anyone?
jcnme27 3 years ago
The vast majority of their cars are blue, however they have some slicktops that are gray, white, or black.

I think the risk of electrocution hazards are very low. The power supply to the flasher is 12 volts.
