@Myrmidon9 Thanks for that bit of info. It's amazing how people think something like this is made just because they haven't seen it before. Each system in Okinawan and Japanese karate has different branches that do different things. It's the one true constant in the history of karate - people study the path, master it, move on from it, then dig the foundation for their own path. Karate is very subjective that way, always has been. Yet instead celebrating the differences, we bicker about them.
this is not goju ryu, its seems to be mixed if not just shotokan because something is off about the first kata, im not practisioner of shotokan, im train goju but i studied some of there katas and its mixed
kata is not to be tranlated into a fight, its practiced as one, making sure good form is there and good power , balance of power and form. kata is cataloge of techniques , blocks have more then more application.
Also, notice the low sweep (which I prefer)which is indicative of Jundokan or offshoots. This is a obverse to most other Ryu-ha, and there is a good sound reason for doing it that way, as well as for lifting it higher. (Stylistic differences, both with good reason.)
G-Man, nice note on the "sweep..." For us, this sweep is done higher (large circle) in the earlier kata. As you know, for us, this movement then evolves and becomes able to be so much more...on that, would you guys like me to come out again and do a seminar in December?
This is not Jap. Goju-Kai. This is a hybrid of Traditional Goju-Ryu. I would expect that this person has been exposed to someone who was connected with Jundokan, Meibukan, and Shoreikan 1.)No opening double kamae-Jundokan or offshoot 2.)Meibukan??--The Fukyu Kata. 3.Shoreikan--GekiSai san, Geki-ha, Kaku-ha...all Toguchi.
Hey G-Man. I very seriously doubt that this kata is a result of any Meibukan influence...if it is, it's Not from my line. It is what it is, not saying bad for bad, but it's short and stiff as compared to Meibukan. It has a distinct resemblance to Tae Kwon Do to me--especially the first few kata.
I am sorry to say, but this is being performed at the level I expect from a student at 9th or 8th Kyu. Your hands are all over the place and every step you take your feet are off the ground. This is not the Goju Ryu I was ever taught. Sorry if you are offended.
I think 9th or 8th kyu is a little harsh there. I very highly doubt you were at that level at 9th or 8th kyu... and if you think you were... get over yourself, you wern't.
Il c'est tromper c'est pas du goju ryu c'est du shotokan copiant le goju ryu shorei-kan.

Gekisai dai san, Gekiha dai ichi and dai ni were kata developed by Seikichi Toguchi (Shoreikan)

All of this criticism of his form. The question should be: Can it be translated into combat , not how pretty does it look! Get over yourselves!

Chamber your fists (for example at 0:51). Your karate reminds me of Shotokan:)
