I always liked the original until I heard this version by The Four Tops. Wow, thats all I can say, and Levi Stubbs voice, just takes me away.All you have to hear is his voice one time, and it just sends chills down my spine.

I worked delivering coal in the late 50,s I used to go to coal mines with my driver mate and pick up coal and bag it up then deliver it to housolds in the liverpool area.

on pay day I would scrub all the coal dust off and get dreesed up in my teddy boy suit and go to Yankee Warrington pubs and play the Fourtops on the Juke Box, I was in Heaven.

this song has haunted me for 45 yrs, that is my name and every time i wanted to br amake up with someone, or end a friendship that was toxic to me i would play that song, and walk away, never new the real lyrics that are muffled i understood , now i understand iam not to blame, today i start to heal from the death of my husband we will be together again...................raine

I think that the Four Tops did justice to the tune.The Left Banke version was OK,but the Tops were ''marginally''better,IMHO

I like both versions. My mother's name is Renay she gave me way when i was 6. I always listened to this song.. I wish she would have always walked away stayed away. I sang this to her once to make her see that she has hurt me in many ways, but she will never change, its been 20 years and she still has not given me a reason to why
