certainly a cane could always be replaced with any long stick/umbrella/branch just like you don't need a real sword to apply kendo techniques. if it's for self-defense, you have to make do with what you have.
That is a good point, a bad leg makes it harder to pull off some of the more dramatic cane moves, and a perfectly healthy person who carries a cane around to mangle attackers with, *might* even get charged when the cops realized the cane wasn't medically neccessary. Still, great looking demos.
I've always found these techniques beautifully impractical for people who actually need canes. All the movement is impossible for them. The techniques are great if you can move easily, but otherwise you're not gonna pull it off. Vid looks good though.
