Your memory is not faulty. Most Atari 8 bit software lacked logic to account for timing differences between NTSC and PAL, so most games ran slower when played in Europe. The economics of the platform has created a strange situation where most of the software was created for the North American market yet was consumed primarily in Europe, meaning that the majority of Atari software was run in non-native mode.
It's not just the music that's slower, the entire game runs ~17% slower in PAL territories. As a result, the games are easier due to the extra reaction time. I tried playing Montezuma's Revenge on an emulator and was much better at it than I remember. Then I noticed it was set to PAL mode. After setting it to NTSC the nostalgic frustration presented itself.
Absolutely quality game! Loved it! Completed many times, but always come back for more. Even though I haven't seen or heard it for about 20 years, I still remember every note of the music. Absolute classic.
holy sugar, today's games lack this kind of atmosthere, when i was a kid this was what made feel me so energized, i really miss those '80 8-bit games. I hope there will be soon a great remake of this classic martial art game on PC! BTW perfect soundtrack! Best regards to all atari 8-bit machines fans
sad thing is ...ive actually done that.. going round general scumbag areas at 3am.. few drunk mates with a sub blasting c64 music out (omahd is my fave) ..its great fun!
.. you might even get chased a few times !
(good fun when you and youre mates get out after them banging on your door at the traffic lights ; )
One of the few beat em ups i had on the Atari 130xe. I was so annoyed as all my mates had Spectrums and C64 with much better games. Atari was "load error and read error" all the time so unreliable!

You guys must be drugged or something. This is the same song with much worse instruments and a very much simplified structure also. Hubbard's ingenious song with it's great and Hubbard-ish asian flute-effects cannot be beat by this song. I do like Atari music, but be fair when you compare them to other versions. Besides, I can't be sure but I think the C64 version is the original one anyway. So this could be only called a bad remix-rape of otherwise a mystical song (no mystique in this version)

@Whelkman True, I heard the NTSC version... ¿What other differences were found, apart from the music tempo?

Holy crap, I played the hell out of this. Thanks for the post.
I could have sworn the music played a little faster, but it's been a good 20 years since I played it.
mason000 1 year ago
If you think the music played a little faster, you might be in N. America and the person posting this might be in Europe.
PAL music is a bit slower owing to the 50hz refreash rate versus 60hz

@mason000 that's cause in this video is in PAL emulation

C64 may be slightly better in graphics and sound department, but Atari XL/XE by the time was good choice I think

Who says the C64 and Spectrum had "better" games? With them it was quantity - with the Atari it's QUALITY!
