@maxrambaldi the hardest part of copying a photo is that it gives you no leeway. The slightest mistake and the whole thing looks wrong, whereas if you're creating your own image you can go off on tangents and have more freedom...which is definitely more fun too.
That said, I find a lot of what I learn from copying photos can be applied to my own concepts.
@wadehjb honestly i find more difficult inventing shapes and lights, or at least i need less than half the time for copying a complex image than creating a new (even if enough simple)..
@maxrambaldi but there aren't many original painters who have this kind of detail and style in their work. A lot of original painters use references or they'll cut and paste scanned textures directly into their work, which has no merit at all.
I don't think you can take anything away from this painting at all. And you should also note it's all done for a very detailed tutorial and is the best beginner tutorial I've seen.
@maxrambaldi To be honest if you were an artist you would know no matter what you create you need some sort of reference I you want it to be high detail/ believable. You Don't for cartoons because they're low detail, but for portraiture you need one. Drawing from life is basically the same thing as drawing from a photograph, drawing what you see , and letting your mind influence it. Don't under appreciate the amount of talent and skill needed to do what he and a lot other artists do
I usually say to friends when they say they saw someone do a picture of something. That it's only practice. human skin tone is in rgb scale 253 220 197 to 241 200 186
then of course you have to change the tone to not skin color to make it more realistic like putting a lot of red white shade a bit a bit blue and green shade a bit more and so on till you have your result.
The eyes and finishing touches...bring the awesomeness into focus ;3 BTW, how did you do the chain for the necklace? I'm still learning to paint, and am interrested in that piece...
For the Love of all that is good and merciful, this is freaking amazing! i don't have any good words to express what i think right now, all i have is amazing and awesome, and that isn't fairly enough to describe this!!
WOW! That was amazing, you have some FANTASTIC talent there! I actually found your page from a comment you made about 'not being able to find work when you can do this type of thing with your eyes closed' or something along those lines.
I'm sure when you do find work, you'll be HIGHLY PAID and RESPECTED!
Oh right i thought there would be lots of jobs that could use your talent. Oh well, don't give up trying though cause when you get there, you will suceed! :D
L o v e d it! iloved howuput the imperfections into her skinand ilove her hair... but one thing... where;s her other eyebrow?? Have u noticed its easier to draw women?
I like to start in b&w because it helps me to focus on the values and lighting, then I can experiment with various colour ranges later (through a series of transparent layers) without affecting my shading.
Great skill!!! but the girl is ugly... You are really skillfull in painting but your taste in women sux!!! Anyway it's the work we admire here so keep up with more beautifull women in the future..!! :D
Ah, the ugliness was my call. :) The models I used for reference were actually very attractive, but I wanted to steer away from my usual glamour style and create a face that was creepy and more natural, and generally emphasise the imperfections.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback. It's appreciated!
Stunning work!

A lot of her left eye brow is hidden in the shadow/perspective, but is more clear in the full picture.
Attractive women and children are easiest to paint I'd say, but I find male skin and imperfect features a lot more interesting.
Glad you liked the vid!
