i tried playing football, when i was 12. but something about being 12 and grabbed by the facemask and yelled at by a grown man didnt appeal to me. so i stuck with hockey, which i still hated, but i could at least hit. looking back i might as well have stuck with football, all i did in hockey was hit anyways. i got cut from most teams because i would never go for the puck, id always go for the hit. it was fun tho. watching ray lewis vids is pretty inspirational haha

I promise you that Ray Lewis is the smartest defensive player in the game and has been for some time now. Ed Reed has achieved much of his greatness thanks to Ray's leadership and mentoring him on how to study film and read offensive keys and tendencies... Singletary coaching Ray was an awesome experience from a Ravens fan's perspective... I still root for Iron Mike when they aren't playing the Ravens...

In no order I would say Bell, Taylor, and Ham are certain, after that I would have to do some hard thinking. D. Thomas, Lloyd, Tippett (who played on many bad teams) Rickey Jackson, Ted Hendricks. Hell, I don't have solid top five for OLB's.

@sokkersweep22 With all do respect 2 Mike and LT who were great no doubt and set the standard. I feel Ray just reinvented the position. He raised the level of how 2 play it with his passion 4 the game. Also 4 as long as he has been in the game he still continues 2 play at a high level.

I laugh when people say dick butkiss was the best linebacker. Maybe the best white linebacker but the BEST!!?? far fom it, he was gritty and tough but I can name five linebackers from now and his time that were bigger, better, faster, tougher, and smarter on the feild. I would give most the credit to the 2000 Ravens D to the best defensive back in history, not Ray Lewis. Notice when Rod Woodson left, the Ravens haven't really done jack.

You are totally correct. SF should have moved him to Saftey in 97. But as a saftey he was by no means slow, and never slowed any team down. Plus he was like having a coach on the field. 2002 with 8 pics, 225 yards and 2 tds for Oakland. That is by no means slow.

I would say because the media. They jumped on the OJ case and rode it full bore. The age group that followed the OJ case had never heard of Lewis. Plus, Lewis didn't kill his white ex wife. Oh, and OJ was obviously guilty.

Inside, and outside? Just sticking to inside I would put Butkus at #1, and it no particular order after that I would have to say Lambert, Lanier, Nitschke, and Singletary. I think Lewis is great, but he rides more on his atletic ability than his heart like a Singletary or Speilman.

Maybe I should give Lewis more credit than I do because of my hatred as him for a person, but I still just can't put him in the top five. Pro Bowls? Is that really a measuring stick. Simon Fletcher is a border line hall of famer in my book, and he never even made one. If that's the case you are saying Junior Seau is better than Lewis. You do make a good point though. Unlike the masses on YT, you are wise.

Then if you are talking outside that's tough. Defensive scheme plays a lot into it, and stats aren't everything. In no order I would say Bell, Taylor, and Ham are certain, after that I would have to do some hard thinking. D. Thomas, Lloyd, Tippett (who played on many bad teams) Rickey Jackson, Ted Hendricks. Hell, I don't have solid top five for OLB's.
