thanks...ive seen similar behavior at assategue island in maryland. the closest ive come is seeing an eagle take out a seagull in midair, then dove into the water with it and drowned it, at which point the female eagle came along and they both shredded the poor thing. one of the coolest yet most gruesome things ive witnessed.
We have raised 2 nests of sparrow hawks. One a lady caught some kids tearing the nest out of her Arborvitae when going to school and another that got thrown to the gym floor at SIU when the exhaust fan was turned on. Also called kestrels, they are a hoot. Lots of work (and chicken) but it's gratifying even years later to find one sitting on a clothes line post, a picnic table or a mailbox. Great little birds who always knew where home was. I think that raptors are special, like cheetahs.
No sweat, good try. If you could do something like that well, you could go to work for NatGeo. I could hear the osprey and see the eagle give the defensive move. Just a streak of the osprey, probably coming in at at least 60 mph, and then the eagle give way. Speed and agility in the bird world. I have seen it all my life sparrows after blackbirds, krackles, and starlings....blackbirds after crows....crows after redtail hawks, and hawks after eagles.....Tough as long as conditions permit.
what it doesn't show is the Eagle throwing a fish to his fellow Eagle on a swing route to the flats with an Osprey jumping the route then dashing back to his nest for a feast with the other Osprey. SEA!!!
I have an Osprey nest across the street. One year, on two different occasions, I discovered a pair of bloody Osprey wings in my front lawn (but no Osprey either time). I don't know about not taking it further than that. I didn't witness it myself, but what other animal do you think could rip off an Ospreys wings...both of them?
@krazy45cat We're on the Potomac River. We have a fairly large population of Osprey, and at least a pair of Bald Eagles (that's the most I've seen at any given time). I hadn't seen the Eagles until fairly recently, but I've been told they've been here for years. I used to travel a lot, so I wouldn't have known. I know when the Eagles are anywhere close because the Osprey go nuts.
These two species have lived side by side through thousands of years. They are both opportunists with a great love for fish. Neither bird cares much about pursuing things beyond what this video shows; but, in an eagle nest, the dominant youngster may push its weaker sibling out of the nest. They are very tough birds.
@Grroocx The Eagles have been stealing the ospreys fish from its nest all year . I went back to the same nest this wensday . theEagles are back and the osprey nest is waiting for them :)
@krazy45cat, as long as the opportunity exists, the eagles will be there. Somehow this apparent liability might even benefit the ospreys in the greater scheme of things—comparable to predation, for example, generally benefiting a prey species. Also interesting: Ospreys abandon nests when disturbed by subtleties, yet create new nests of their own volition in noisy places such as ferry docks. Thanks for the post.
Think my money is on the Eagle. You are so lucky to be capturing this, it will be a memory that will last for a long time. They can be nasty about there young and nest. Thanks for sharing with us, take care and have a good one.
@usframe It was really something to see . After that a guy sat down very close under the nest ( Not Me ) and the eagle was so worked up that he was swooping down way to close the guy and circling the tree about 4 times . I had the female jump off the nest last week and come towards me . Not a good feeling .
Great vid!! Wow Bald Eagles already looks like mean s.o.b.s you'd think other birds would think hell no I'm not messin with that! lol. Thanks for putting this up!
@krazy45cat I know about your Zombie Apocalypse, but I want to know if you ever tried Orange Bacardi and Corona mixed.....@ home. I have some Corona, but want you opinion if you've tried the orange rum instead of the Limon.....I don't like the Limon...PERIOD!!!
